"Damn, that\'s big.."
« on: December 14, 2002, 03:34:24 AM »
The thread title is the first words that came out of my mouth when assembling the Steel Battalion controller. Yes, folks my very own copy of the infamous 47 button Steel Battalion has arrived and I must say , it\'s friggin\' cool, if not a tad on the difficult side.

This is by no means  a review, because I\'m having problems making it past mission one, due to difficulity and not being the greatest mech pilot in the world. However, let me address some stuff.

First off, the controller is awesome. It\'s huge, feels expensive and flashes . I\'m sorry, but this controller should be standard on every Mech game.

Second, the graphics. Capcom went for an intentional grainy look, but in my opinion it hurts the game. The game is by no means a beautiful game from the start and the grain only makes matters worse.

Overall so far it has been an interesting and exciting game - but very damn hard. Maybe I wasn\'t meant to pilot a Mech or maybe Capcom wanted to make it extremely difficult, either way the difficulity is way up there.

Key question --  Is it worth checking out if you\'re not a collector/Capcom whore?  Or perhaps you could answer me, yunno, after you get passed the first mission. ;)

I\'m still trying to decide if the game interests me enough to shell out the money for it.

Oh, and if you have a Digital Camera, take us a few snaps ::thumbs up::

If you are not a hardcore Mech / Capcom fan than I can\'t really recommend the game. It is expensive, overly difficult and just plain hard to find a place to store the controller.

Honestly, I think it is something everyone should try for the experience, but there is no way I can recommend it to everyone to buy.

I\'m sure everyone would like to try it once...

...even if they won\'t admit it.
July 2002: If you had bought $1000.00 worth of Nortel stock one year ago, it would now be worth $49.00. Enron, $16.50 left. Worldcom, $5.00 left. If you had bought $1,000.00 worth of Budweiser beer one year ago, drank it all and turned in the cans for the 10 cent deposit, you would have $214.00. Based on the above, my current investment advice is to drink heavily and recycle.

I tried it at LIC\'s house. It has way too many useless buttons IMHO. Not to mention I kept flipping it on it\'s side.

Also I have a small gripe with it\'s gear shift. It feels to stiff, and flimsy. I was afraid I was going to break it.

Did I mention pop-up? It is hard to notice while playing, but if you are watching it you notice it quite a bit.

This game does give you a good sense that you are in an actual mech though.  Overall it is quite impressive.

arggg, I would get this game... except its $200 :(

plus, I have no place in my room for a controller roughly the size of a grand piano. :p

I would love to play a game with a great controller,  but sometimes price makes things a little..err far out for me to get.  I must say I am one of the biggest GT3 fans but I still havent got the 100 dollar controller for it.

If it was standard for every mech game,  then it would be more feasable for me to buy it.

I\'d like to see some sort of standard usage of the controller in Mech games, but the chances of this happening are nil. Other companies are goin\' to be less than happy about building a game with another company\'s rival product in mind.
