PS2 stuck on Widescreen for DVD\'s?
« on: December 26, 2000, 12:10:01 PM »
I was wondering if a DVD had to be on Widescreen the whole time, or if you can switch back and forth from Full Screen to Widescreen.  I know in the options menu that you can change the screen size, but it goes to Widescreen for the DVD.  I watched T2: Ultimate DVD last night and was just wondering if you can switch it, it will take me a little while to get used to the black bars, but it\'s not that bad. If anybody can help me, thanks.

It depends on the DVD.  Some have widescreen and pan and scan (edited to fit your screen) coding on the same DVD.  Some movies come as 2 DVDs, one widescreen and one pan and scan.  But if the movie is encoded only as widescreen, there\'s no way for the PS2 (or any DVD player) to change it.

How can I change it during the movie?  I have seen my friend do this with his Panasonic DVD player on Mission to Mars (change from widescreen to full screen).  How can I do it?

The movie has to be a pan and scan version to do 4:3.  Otherwise you will get black bars.  Get use to it.

It worked great KillaX, I had the DVD\'s on 4:3 letterbox, and I changed them to 16:9 and I can see A LOT more of the picture.  Thanks for your help and I tested it to make sure I didn\'t lose any of the picture, and nothing is gone. :)

You aren\'t seeing more of the picture...  You have an anamorphicly enhanced disc in the machine.  You are seeing the exact same image as in letterboxed mode, but every thing is stretched vertically.  Can\'t you notice that people are a little longer than normal????

If it\'s so important to watch the movie with the tv filled with video and you will go to lengths to stretch a movie to do it, then enjoy...

Again, you can\'t get pan and scan on the PS2 without putting a pan and scan disc in the machine.  Some DVD players will zoom in to fill the screen, but PS2  won\'t...

Shall I say again.  Enjoy the black bars.  GET USE TO IT!

It is amazing to me how many people just don\'t get it. This is the reason the PS2 should not have had a DVD player in it at all. ;)

When you watch a movie at the theatre is it Wide or Square (like a TV)??? IT IS WIDE! I read in OPM that a lot of the screen from the original film is cut out to fit your TV when you buy a Full Screen Movie or DVD. I personally enjoy Widescreen more because it is how it\'s supposed to be! I agree with you, Videoholic

I enjoy widescreen more.  You get over the black bars pretty quickly.

I never said I didn\'t like Widescreen, I like 16:9 a lot better than letterbox.  Yes I noticed it was stretched (why there is more picture) but I didn\'t lose any of the sides like I would in Full Frame.  Now I just need to get my Monster Cable Gamelink 300 & Lightwave 100 and I\'ll be set.
