A friend of mine bought a AMD Thunderbird 1200 Mhz with 256 mb ram and a Geforce 2 card. 19" monitor
He payed 1700 $ for it.
I went over to him 25/5 and played some starcraft in a LAN. One of the guys there had Black and white with him, we installed it on my friends 1200 Mhz TB. In the setup we choosed high detail, shadows and everything else, we used the resolution 1200x1024 32 colour.
The game lag hard, I guess we got about 10-15 fps.
Jesus the charachters looks really bad, just look at the feets and hands, looks like FFVII charachters.
If this game had been on the PS2/xbox or the GC nobody would have said that the game looked good.
I havent played the game a lot, but the onces that had says that the game is great. I don´t doubt that, but it does not look good. (IMO)
Maybe I´m a console fan but IMO B&W does not look good.
-
the peasant models werent the point of that game. the envirement looked great didnt it?
how about the creature AI? you will not find AI like that in any other game. B&W was revolutionary in terms of gameplay and interaction
-
The amount of things going on slowed it down. The AI in the game is massive.
Also lower it to 16 bit color you\'ll get better framerates.
-
Im waiting for the PS2 version.
I hear the game is good!
-
Well I don\'t know about the rest of your friend\'s setup but mine is a 1.2Ghz T-bird C-class 266fsb w/256 DDR PC2100 on a Radeon LE, and wrap it up for $1100 (w/o monitor).
I haven\'t tested B&W, Hell I don\'t even own the game. I\'m kind of anxious to try Tribes2, but I don\'t want to buy it.
-
Is Tribes 2 gonna be online for PS2??
I wanna play it, but my PC is very old..
So Ill just wait for the PS2 version. :D
-
while we\'re comparing things to consoles, how about putting down the resolution to good ol 640x480?

No kidding... that\'s your problem. Trying to run that game at 1200 x 1024 in 32 bit color is very unrealistic, especially for an AMD and a GeForce 2. Try 800 x 600 to start, and then see if you can push it up to 1024 x 768. Try to get the highest res you can accomplish with 32 bit color. 32 bit color is much better than 16 bit.
You also might want to make sure you don\'t have any other useless applets running in the system tray. Lots of vendors set up their systems with tons applets you don\'t need. Run msconfig to see what\'s running.

I hope I got this the wrong way,but are you saying that AMD\'s are bad?
Because if you are, that will bring upon you nO-One\'s wrath.

Intel sucks!
AMD rules!
Now Im nO-One\'s best friend! ;)

I haven\'t made up my mind about AMD yet. I must tell you that I worked with an AMD Athlon PC about a year ago, and it was a real pain in the ass. I realize that it was running on one of the first Athlon motherboards released, and it probably had a buggy and inferior chipset, but it\'s still hard to get that experience out of my mind. I\'ve always used Intel CPUs, and never had the kind of stability and compatibility problems I had with that AMD. I\'m sure they work fine in general, and they are certainly a lot cheaper than Intel.
This is supposed to be console debating, not CPU debating, right? :D

The first AMD chipsets were horrible, and best left forgotten. And while they aren\'t perfect yet they have come a long was since then.
The only really good chipset ever was the Intel bx440.
But the Athlon outmatches Intel CPU\'s in just about everything due to it\'s massive floating point power. The main complaint about the CPU is that it get\'s hot,but the upcoming Athlon.4 (The Palomino core) is alot cooler than the current Tbirds it uses less power even if it has a higher number of transistors.
But Intel CPU\'s don\'t have FPU\'s that are powerful enough (especially the Pentium.4) it\'s one if the main reason they perform so badly against Tbirds with a much lower clockspeed.
-
For starters, does your friend know anything about computers? Tons of things need to be tweaked and optimized. I play B&W @ 1024x768x32 on a Athlon T-Bird 1ghz w/a GeForce 2 + 256mb RAM and it runs nowhere near 15fps.
especially for an AMD and a GeForce 2.
As opposed to what? AMD is rockin\' right now, and a GeForce 3 is overrated.
- dm
- the trick is to keep breathing.
-
if a geforce 3 is overrated... what will the x box thing be like then? overrated!!?
probably.
-
Personally,I am very excited about ATi\'s new offering Truform technoligy,it\'ll be powering the Radeon.2
Read about it here -->> http://www.anandtech.com/showdoc.html?i=1476

Until some games are written with the GeForce3 and DirectX8 in mind, it will remain over-priced and over-rated.
-
I\'m sorry but I gotta disagree, PC\'s game wise are underated not over rated. They were the first to have online games and will always have the best. PC\'s will also always be light years ahead of consoles power wise, my pc went out of date 3 years ago and power wise mune blows the ps2 out of the water.
BTW AMD processors rule.

Maybe so. But there is a few things you have to take into consideration.
Consoles do not have to deal with patches or hardware conflicts. Console gamers do not have the paitence to buy a game and then have to go and download a patch for it work.
The genres in the PC area seems to be limited. I am in no way saying PC gaming sucks--it doesn\'t. But you just don\'t see Soul Calibur, Capcom VS SNK, Resident Evil: Code Veronica and other games on the PC, now do you? On the flip side, console gamers don\'t see games like Tribes 2 and such . But, with broadband access and HD add-ons, we will see these.
Another factor is cost. Using the GeForce3 as an example, it is priced at around $600 bucks. That is $600 dollars just for a video card and if your CPU is below the 1ghz mark, before you noticed a big difference. Also, as mentioned before, the games need to be wrote in DirecX8 to take full advantage of the GeForce3. Despite all this, there is no denying that the GeForce3 can produce some awesome graphics. :)
I see computer games and console games as two different \'relationships\'.
The console game offers instant gradification and fun in the family room. It also offers the no hassle, instant play, along with a cheap price. You get your friends over and have a few bouts of Tekken Tag Tourament, then you turn it off. It is just that. A gaming console. It does nothing else (unless you count PS2 DVD playback).
Computer games are much more complicated. The non-online games are real-time strat. games, that offer long term play. Then you have the choice to go online and meet new people, establish new "relationships" and in some games even form a "clan". Something, for the most part, that hasn\'t been achieved on the console area. Online gaming to the consoles is still too new, and this level of interaction won\'t be reached for quite awhile, in my humble opinion.
In the end, it can be summed up by one phrase.
"Different strokes, for different folk."

I was planning to buy GeForce 3 but it\'s so damn expensive!
I shall start to save money for it... :)
[ I\'ll try to survive a year with my Creative 3d Blaster GeForce 2 pro 64mt - and then I shall buy Geforce 3. Well, it must get a LITTLE cheaper to suit my wallet :) ]
Well, my computer ( we bought it ) is Athlon, 1,2Ghz.
So I hope Athlon is good :) ( I heard it surpassess Intel Pentium by far )

I\'d wait 4-6 months, then the GeForce3 should be cheaper. Plus, games should be taking advantage of it by then.
Congrats on the new PC.
-
I think buying a PC for 1700$ is like throwing the money away. It is not worth anything 4 years later.
And there is still BOTTLENECKS on pc:s that makes game AI and other things not to good. The x-box does not have those problems (maybe AI) because it has only one memory.
If there were no big Bottlenecks on the PC a game like B&W should run at 80 fps 1200x1024, but it does not!
Why do all PC games look like ****!! High resolution and very few polygons.
-
First of all.
A PC is not designed as a console, consoles play games that\'s their purpose.PC\'s play games as a secondary thing.I don\'t play alot of games,I browse the internet and I use alot of Photoshop and alot of other work.Games are not my nr.1 concern. That goes for most people out there (The keyword in there mostpeople)
PC\'s are designed to to everything needed from using word to playing games.
2nd of all
There are many things your friend could have been doing wrong.
- Did he have the VIA 4in1 drivers installed.?
- Was he using the drivers that came with his vid card or nVidia\'s Detonator drivers?
- If he was using the detonators, what version was he using.?
- Was he playing the game with full FSAA?
There is alot to consider with PC\'s.
-
Also I find Service Pack 2 for Win2k has bad side effects to my AMD/VIA/SBLIVE system
-
What effects excactly?
I\'ve been thinking about installing Sp.2

I couldn\'t even get Win2K to run on my friend\'s AMD Athlon (650 mhz), and I tried for a long time. This was before service pack 2. You see what I mean about my frustration with AMDs? Oh well, I guess I can keep blaming it on the motherboard/chipset. Or maybeeee.... on the Wintel conspiracy????
-
Under standard install of Win2k on my system, my HD is not recognized as UDMA, which makes operation slow and noisy. Installing the VIA 4-in-1 drivers fixes this problem. However, installing Service Pack 2 for Win2k hangs on the install everytime. After its "installation", SP 2 creates a "dead zone" upon startup where I can\'t execute any program for roughly 1-2 minutes
So I\'m still at SP 1
My system:- Thunderbird 1.2Ghz 266fsb
- 256 DDR PC2100 RAM
- FIC AD11
- Maxtor Diamond+ 30G
- SBLive!5.1
- Radeon LE
- Linksys LNE100TX
- Toshiba 12x40x DVD-ROM
- Windows 2000 Professional
$1100

Dang! And I was hoping to whipe the floor with the wetnosed console kiddies ala DC Quake3ers (although I\'ve never actually played with Q3 players on a DC and I don\'t actually have Tribes2 just yet) Ah whell....

I\'m betting on the online gamers.
