The Xbox was unveiled to the accompaniment of a blazing fanfare and one of the very first titles proudly shown to display the full might of Microsoft’s wonder machine was the graphically stupendous Malice. Strange then that nothing was mentioned of the title at E3 and that now it has emerged that Microsoft is apparently unwilling to publish the game it so recently championed. Curioser and curioser.
In a story on the Web, Jez San revealed that Argonaut is in talks with four unnamed publishers, all vying for a slice of the Malice pie. Some of the deals on the table include plans to put Malice across various platforms, although San stated that whatever the outcome, Malice would definitely appear on Xbox first as the game is in the latter stages of development, despite the absence of final dev kits in the Argonaut offices.
This revelation is the latest in a series of blips in Malice’s tumultuous life. Originally created for PSone and set to be published by Fox, the game was mysteriously withdrawn, reappearing later at the forefront of Microsoft’s ostensible Xbox revolution. It would now appear, however, that Microsoft has cooled towards the game, no longer including the game in its list of titles it will publish itself. Malice was certainly conspicuous by its absence from Microsoft’s E3 press conference.
CVG contacted Argonaut for comment, and Keith Robinson, games development director, confirmed that a number of publishers were indeed interested in acquiring rights to Malice and that a deal would hopefully be struck in the near future. Robinson refused to comment on why Microsoft did not wish to publish the game itself, but he did ad that if the game did go multiplatform he didn’t foresee any problems with porting Malice over to either PS2 or Gamecube. Whatever the outcome of these talks, Argonaut remains confident that Malice will ship close after the US launch of Xbox. More when we have it.
I hope this is true. Malice looks like a really cool game. I hope if they do port it over they do it right, because most ports onto the PS2 suck really bad compared to the original. Now all the PS2 needs is DOA3 and Munch. :D

I actually mentioned this to a friend the other day. I looked over and said "Where was Malice at E3?", and he just looked over at me and said "What the hell does that have to do with what we are going to have for lunch?" . Never the less, the question wandered in my head, along with important questions like "why does Mcdonalds offer 9 piece chicken nuggets and then skip all the way to 20? Why not something like 15?".. Anywayssssssssssssss...
Back to my point!
I am curious as to why Microsoft cooled down on this title? It looked to be a killer game and the graphics was simply amazing. Is Microsoft smoking crack or do they know something we don\'t about it (obviously, they do)?
-
I hope this is true for the sake of the anti-XB knuckleheads who won\'t buy a XB. I on the other hand, could care less, I\'ll get the XB version.
-
I think it will be not a multi platformer. Malice is one of the franchises of the XBOX.
-
That is not bad news at all, thats a stupid move by microsoft isnt it,i mean this was an exclusuive game, and they have put it to one side.
But the intresting bit is
"but he did ad that if the game did go multiplatform he didn’t foresee any problems with porting Malice over to either PS2 or Gamecube"
I would love to see what the game looked like on the ps2,at least we could compare the ps2 and Xbox(in a go way not a bad way),just so we could see how different the games looked.

i dont think you read the article or else you would know that its not their franchise anymore because they didn\'t want it - so know it is just whoever wants it
so i think you mean WAS instead of IS in your quote
here i fixed it ====>> Malice was one of the franchises of the XBOX.

I guess this is something to throw in the face of mindless zealots.
But if I get an X-Box I\'d much rather have that version than a PS.2 or GameCube version.
The game was designed from the ground up for the X-Box it\'s programmed using the DirectX api.
I think it\'ll be much better on the X-Box rather than the other consoles.
-
well, this news doesnt really effect me that much, i wont be getting the game anyway. But it is nice to know that yet another good platforming game might be coming the way of PS2. But J&D will overshadow it, especially if its just a port
-
sweet, this game is going to be the best!!
ooops,this isn\'t a MGS2 thread?? aww crap i did it again! :) oh well...er...later!
-
I don\'t care, ps2 can\'t do bump mapping and textures so it\'ll suck on ps2 + it belongs on xbox
-
"I don\'t care, ps2 can\'t do bump mapping and textures so it\'ll suck on ps2"- Metal_Gear_Ray
Wow, I had no idea bump mapping effected gameplay so dramatically! The game can go from spectacular promise to crap just because of a few less graphical features. Jeesus.. how in the hell did we ever survive the 8 through 32 bit generations with all these games which were absolute crap because they didn\'t have bump mapping?
What\'s even more of a shocker.. Metal Gear Ray has just uncovered a major secret about the PS2.. it can\'t do textures!!! My god, what were they thinking! No wonder developers have been having such problems with it! To think that we\'ve been playing games on it for this long and never realized that they were just bare polygon models.. SOny\'s brainwashing must be very powerful!
Well, damn man... thanks for showing us the light there MGR! Maybe you\'d make a better point if for once you didn\'t assume the rest of us were as shallow as you are.
Anyhow.. I\'m not too excited about this news. Malice never had me too thrilled since I\'m not really into platformers. What little platform action I do get would probably be better served through Sonic Adventure 2 than from what I\'ve seen of malice. At least Sonic is fast and can provide a good adrenaline rush on some of the levels. Looks fun though, and worth a rental at least.
-
wow calm down man
no ps2 cannot do bump mapping and great textures, its as simple as that ps2 fans have to swallow it, xbox will have the edge. I personally see Malice as a nice game to show off the power of your xbox, I\'m not really intersted in the games gameplay.
-
Computer and Video games are simply making a story out of nothing (as usual). Argonaut are MULTI-PLATFORM developers!!! Hence whilst Malice is a high profile game for the XBox, it doesn\'t mean Microsoft ought to be the publishers!

...if you read Textures in Mpeg2(8:1,10:1 compression) off the DVD...you have no problem ;)
...you are joking Right ?
(The X-Box version will be better ;))

no ps2 cannot do this, DR Yassam told me this there was some sort of reason I think (I dont know) Malice will be nice, not great just nice ;-)

well...I hold Dr Yassam in high esteem but I Trust Volition...and if They say PS2 can do it...I prefer believe expert developers rather than a brilliant Member ;)
-
so...Metal Gear Ray...say they cancelled this game for XBox completely (just hypothetically) and you had been looking forward to it for a long time. And they said it was only coming to PS2...that means the games sucks, because its texture capabilities arent as good as the good ol\' XBox?
remember, any special feature XBox has in hardware, PS2 can do in software. And Ps2 can do textreus as well as the other consoles, it just requires more effort. PS2 does also do texture compression. it can have ratios of up to 80:1. but the textures have to move around inside the emotion engine uncompressed.
ugh...i think i got lost there...basically what i was saying is, the game is based around its gameplay ideas...not whther it can do bump mapping...then i got side tracked
-
Thanks for the compliment guys! :)
On the issue of texture compression, rather than restating my past comments, please check out the following thread instead (there were a few points I failed to respond to, but hey, it was Christmas! :));

no I\'m not saying that malice will suck withouth bump-mapping but malices main special features is bump-mapping. I am just saying that ps2 will never get a perfect port (not in this generation) :)

I don\'t see why the ps2 couldn\'t do this. I think J&D looks better.

Microsoft are trowing this title awaywhat madness is this ?
Maybe they are concentrating there attention on maybe buying out a Large Company or something.
or maybe they drank a little too much at E3 and decided to so it when they where drunk.
Anyhoo
Who here thinks SONYand NINTENDO are going to get a phone call from MR Gates and his pile of cash tommorow ?

It\'s not like malice is not coming out on xbox. Just going multi-console. And I doubt the other versions would even matter. Malice was built for xbox so I it won\'t be same on other consoles.

Dont make me post pictures of DMC, Getaway, Stuntman, GT3 or FFX to show PS2 really has no problems with textures..
Bump-mapping?
I thought GT3 and Tekken Tag had this?
(GT3 road, Tekken Tag floor at some stages)
-
Yeah, this Malice thing is just odd. It is not like MS doesn\'t have the money to publish the title and their relationshop with Argonaut is (was?) quite healthy. I wonder what prompted them to say "No".
