Title: Darkcloud ( my impressions )
Post by: jp6666 on May 30, 2001, 04:06:17 PM
ok i have been playing the game for a while now , and before  saying what i think of it , i will tell you that this is my opinion and that i loved zelda link to the past on the nintendo :D  ok here goes

Gameplay :  when you begin , you have a little trouble the camera but you will get used to it , you lock on the monster and hit him , the fighting is pretty repetitive and for some of you it can get boring if it is not your kind of game :D  The AI is a ***** , he hits you and runs away ( bastards )  , i actualy like the atibutes thing where you can give a fire spell on your sword so it will hit harder on ice people ( example )  , about the town , well i think that part of the game is great ! you put trees , water roads where you want  looks like most of my hours are going there :D

Graphics : what can i say they are awesome !!!!! the draw distance is great and  everything is really clear , but i have to say the villagers are not that detailed but they are still great . I have one problem is that sometimes you can see VERY small jaggies and some flickering but nothing to bother you .

Sound : The is ok . Nothing great . I wish it had voice acting , i beleive it would have been better  .

all in all , its a good game  ,  for now i really love playing it , i am only scared of getting bored with the same things over and over , but i guess we will see by playing :D hope this helps

Oh the magician IS MY HERO  :D

well the game is living up to my expectations of a ho hum repetitive Adventure RPG with Zelda like looking characters.

So far from all I\'ve heard and read I\'ll have to rent DC to get a taste

LOL! You, lover of Ring of Red, call a game repetitive? How funny...

I played this brefely in Software ect.  It was pretty fun and the graphics were great.  EGM rated it much better than any other mag or site so far and I usually trust their reviews cause they aren\'t afraid to mark hyped games low.

ddaryl... Dark Cloud is easily one of the best dungeon crawlers I\'ve played...  Anyways, to the person who started this thread (missed the name, ooops) HOW DID YOU GET SO FAR?!?! :)  Did you get it yesterday, or are you a freak of nature, I\'m on the 7th floor of the first dungeon!

[edit : might have ass-u-me\'ed a bit far on how far you got... thought you got UP TO ice people, but what about the magician person?  who?]

The question is...has Dark Cloud superseded Zelda on all fronts?  Now, let us be fair with this question and set all preconceived notions of either of the two aforementioned games aside.

I got the game earlier today, and I\'m currently on either the 6th or 7th level (2 levels after the first Duel battle).  Here are my impressions...

First of all, I think the graphics are great.  Although the dungeons do appear repetitve, things like that never seem to bother me.  All special effects are done nicely, and add a great deal to the visual flair.

Gameplay-wise, I believe the game is decent.  The only real thing that bothers me is the difficulty.  It\'s not the enemies that I\'m referring to, but rather, almost everything else.  My current weapon breaks way too often, which forces me to take my attention away from the action and put it towards item management.  Also, actual healing items are too rare this early in the game.  I absolutely hate having to constantly return to the "surface" in order to obtain a piece of bread or 2.  Lastly, the enemies should be balanced out more.  Things start out easy, but for some reason, about 4-5 levels down, you\'ll start to encounter enemies that easily outperform the ones found on the previous level.  The increase in difficulty here should have been a little more gradual.
That\'s just the bad side though, and I\'m sure most of those complaints will be nullified as I progress through the game.  I\'ll post some more impressions tomorrow, after I get some more game-time in.

Quick Q:  I keep seeing this \'Zelda-esque\' bit and I can\'t help but wonder what that means to those of us who weren\'t impressed with the Zelda games on N64, like myself.  For those of you that have played both, just how Zelda-esque is this thing?

This game is about 10% like the N64 Zeldas... or mabey 5%... not very much... almost everything is different, I\'ve owned both... and you cannot compare these two at all.

I\'m a few more hours into the game now, still going good, it\'s getting more interesting now... some really neat things, now I have a store to visit (which you have to build) which I am thankful for...  I believe there are other dungeon surroundings when we get out of the first dungeon (say a moonscape (in the manual) or forest (in screenshots))...  I\'m just really looking forward to getting to this first town... I wonder how many darn floors this first dungeon IS?!  heh... sorry... :)
Title: Wow...
Post by: Jigen on May 30, 2001, 11:35:40 PM
finally beat the first dungeon...  The second area kicks... new dungeon graphics, and a new objective... very very interesting stuff, this game has just actually gone UP a few points for me... now : 92%

I played it very briefly @ my EB. (for like 10 minutes) .. I really can\'t give an opinion on it,.. and I\'m reading your guys\' thoughts to help me decide whether to get it or not. I have too many games piling up and I\'m not sure if this one would get my attention.

This game is very addictive.
I dont know if you guys have noticed my absence for a few days, but that is because this game has grabbed every spare second I have.
You would think this game would get repetitive, and the only times it does are around the lst floors of the dungeons.
The reason it doesnt get repetitive is because each time you get to a new set of dungeons the enemies completely change, and I dont mean change appearance but have the same techniques, everythig  changes from thier attacks to thier attack patterns, and then you always look forward to putting together the next set of houses and getting your treasure.
Right now Im in the shipwreck on the last Floor but I CANT FIGURE OUT WHAT TO PUT IN THE MUSIC BOX!
SOMEONE TELL ME!
Right now I have the Macho sword with 68 strength, 99 endurance, 99 speed, 54 magic.
Its pretty beastly.

I got it on thursday night couldnt play it till friday evening...Darn work............My dagger keeps breaking and loosing all my attributes.........those creatures take too much off...it is unfair! I either run out of repair potion or food first and then I\'m toast! how many times did it take guys to get through the first dungeon (out and back) i\'m up to 8 and i\'m in the limited Zone. those darn big mosters with shields.............and bats are annoying! my dagger is up to +4 and I havent even used my other one yet......is that a bad thing??????  overall an A+ The game is a little tough...but the building your own town is cool and the graphics are awesome. One glitch I have goind is the first duel I had a clipping problem or somehting like that. I died then it went away....Strange.....anyone else have that problem?

PSM magazine gave Dark Cloud a 6/10

Most mags or reviews say 7/10 - 8/10. All reviews have the game rated lower then Red Faction.

I\'m still hoping for some mind melting innovative RPG action. ALthough DC seems to have given it a shot from all I\'ve read it seems to have fallen short. I might give DC a rent.

After reading all of YOUR reviews I get the feeling the game is cool but not really Great

watch the intro and the beginning fmv........they are awesome!  really fluid!  the beginning FMV is about 5-10 minutes.

Title: Little hints for Killa...
Post by: Jigen on June 02, 2001, 05:06:41 PM
don\'t know if you\'re still stuck there but... try as hard as you can to get the store up and running so you can buy more than one health and repair poweder, after that though, the mayor will no longer give you free stuff... until then mabey just look around town, and take as much advantage of the mayor as you can...  Also, just so you know, don\'t think this game uses any FMV, all real time stuff... real nice...  BTW, I\'m up to the 4th town/dungeon now, a little more than half way through.  20 hours and this game still rocks.

Remember that repair powders and health can be a little expensive when you start though... so don\'t get it TOO early... just when you need it... also, don\'t ever continue after you die, if you die in a dungeon, reset the computer (until you get more chars) because if you restore back into town you\'ll lose half your $$$\'s

I rented this game yesterday and I\'m in The Wise Owls Forest and I\'m on the level where you have to play as Goro the whole time. I can\'t get used to this guy and I just wanna know if that level is long cuz I hate that fat son of a b!tch! you mean the floor you play as goro?  I forget, you may play a floor or two...  they\'re randomly generated, so they shouldn\'t be too big, don\'t worry, you won\'t need to use him too much... later on though he is actually a bit useful.

I bought the game a few days ago and I must say its better than I thought.  I love the usuage of items, having to use them if your weapon is at the brinking point of breaking.  Having to use them when you need to replenish yourself with water or food.  And I had to sell items for money.  Thats something I haven\'t done in any rpg for a long time.  I find that seeing fish bait gives you the most.

Sounds good, im certainly going to keep a look out for it.

You all seem to be finding it tricky, thats good news. PSW said the JAP version was really easy.

I just hope they haven\'t made the game harder by using cheap tactics like making items rarer which only in the long run lead to frustration.

Well I am at Queens.... Is that far for the 3rd day you\'ve had it?

Post by: Jigen on June 03, 2001, 07:58:38 PM
Think that\'s pretty much above average, I think I was there on my 3rd day...  a few others were too, the 4th dungeon was a bit of a letdown, but the town was cool enough, but the 5th dungeon rocks...  Although, the 4th dungeon played the best so far.
