Title: Hands-on: Herdy Gerdy (PS2)

The silence over the next Tomb Raider title has allowed Core Design some breathing room to explore other ventures of development. Herdy Gerdy is one of them, and it’s been hyped up for its amazing cartoon visuals and unique gameplay. How it would all come together, however, was yet to be seen until we were able to give the game a run at E3. Unfortunately, right now Herdy Gerdy is pretty rough in numerous areas, and unless things are patched up before its release, doesn’t seem to have a whole lot going for it.
It seems that Herdy Gerdy looks amazing in screen shots, but in motion it’s hard to distinguish it from a first-generation PlayStation title. Sadly, I’m not alone in this – other Gaming Age staffers at E3 can attest to accidentally distinguishing it as a PlayStation title at first. It isn’t that it still doesn’t have that cartoon look – it’s hard to nail down exactly why it didn’t look great. One reason was because Eidos Interactive decided to show their console titles on some of the blurriest, most off colored TV sets ever, but even on the nice TVs in Sony’s booth, pixelation was all over, and the once impressive environments seemed to have lost their charm in a veil of simplicity.
So far the gameplay indicates that it will become rather repetitive quickly. The goal of Herdy Gerdy is to point a group of animals from one "cage" to another. Besides chasing them from behind to point them in the right direction, there are different bells and whistles that can be used to gain their attention, but in the short time I spent with the game, it was hard to decipher the difference between the items; using them randomly eventually gained the attention of the animals. The levels spruce things up by putting rivers and pink bears in animals’ path, but unless there’s some wider variation in the final game, Herdy Gerdy’s novelty will wear off quickly.
There’s still time for Core Design to tweak up Herdy Gerdy for its release, and we believe it still has the potential to be a great title. Gaming Age will continue to monitor the game’s progress, and follow up with updates as the year goes on.
