Sony drops British PlayStation 2 price
Despite assurances from Sony before E3 that PlayStation 2 would remain at £299 until Christmas, there’s no smoke without fire…
In a bid to bring the retail cost of PlayStation 2 into line with the rest of Europe, SCEE has cut the price of the machine in the UK to £269. Sony reps are playing the move down as a price drop.
"We looked at exchange rates across Europe and realised we could pass on savings to British consumers," CVG was told by Sony today. "We want to make it absolutely clear that this is not an official, strategic price cut."
The great news is that you can not get down to your local shop and grab a PlayStation 2 for an almost bargain price. Almost. E3 rumour suggested that a far more significant alteration in price was to occur around Christmas, possibly to £199. A figure of £249 was being thrown around at E3, but in light of today’s events this seems extremely unlikely.
Sony is preparing for a large Christmas ahead of the launches of Xbox and Gamecube next year, with the only real competition arriving in the form of Game Boy Advance. Several major games, including Jak and Daxter, ISS Pro Evolution 3, WipEout Fusion and Devil May Cry are all scheduled to hit before the end of the year, and the chopped price is likely to spell much needed cash for the entire industry.
Sony is expected to make an official comment in the coming days.
Sounds sweet...

PS2: 199

Xbox: 299
Advantage: SONY

yeah i heard about thiis drop and tried to tell ethugg about it..
he, being a fanboy dismissed it and told me i was wrong..
jeez.
well yes sony wil have the advantage, and this is another reason why the x box will have trouble with casual gamers.

The price of the games are the most important thing, not console. It does however put PS2 inline with GC which is nice.

Good news for gamers in the UK...but...
£269 is still $381 US. Not exactly a big cut to say the least. But better then when it was £299 which is around $400 something. But in either case, not that big of a drop. Come Christmas, if the prediction of a more significant drop holds true, then we have something to talk about. But right now, just a bandaid for the wound.
In case your wondering, I got this conversion from the GA Forums on a similar thread.

Big deal...
Here in the Netherlands ( and the rest of Europe I think )
we still pay DFL 999,- for a PS2. that\'s about $ 450,- to $475,-. Consider that this is a price instituted by retailers, not Sony. Until now the Sony price was still DFL 1149,-. Do da math.
BTW. when GBA launches here on June 22nd we pay about DFL 129,- for a single GBA game. $ 55,- Duhhh ....
They must think we\'re all billionaires ! :nut:

think yourselves lucky people ............here in Australia we payed a staggering $750 for the damn machine
-
In sweden we pay about $370-400..

The price has been cut here too - at least the one place I looked. Now a brand new PS2 can be yours for the low price of $384.91...
