yes iostream, you have played the xbox, and so have hundreds of others, when they went to E3, the general consensus seems to be mixed feelings by most.

By the way, I seem to remember the playstation doing significantly better than the N64, despite the N64 being more powerful, why was that? Simple, psx was available, it had gotten more good games out, and despite the fact that Nintendo advertised pretty heavy for about a year there, they still didn\'t sell half as many units as the psx. As far as what will win this console war, it will be in part advertising, but it will also be in part from what good titles are out.

Advertising: ps2 has the playstation and sony brand name recognitions, thats a big plus, psx is by far the most popular console ever, and sony is one of the most trusted companies in the world (23rd most says a recent survey). It also has the sequels to familiar titles (oddworld and doa are not familiar series to casualgamer no.1) such as MGS2 (xbox will have it a year later, thats not good enough) Final Fantasy X, Twisted Metal Black, GT3, Tekken 4, Virtua Fighter 4, etc. etc. Then sony can user their power as an entertainment/media company to get plenty of tv,movie, and magazine adds out, along with some nice celebrity plugs, at a much lower cost than the other two companies.

xbox: has the name recognition of Microsoft? Microsoft is a household name, but not alway a good one, and they haven\'t put out any really big quality hardware before, mice and keyboards, not entire systems though. Has no stand out name recognition title from the previous generation that I can think of, if you know one please list it(by stand out I mean super seller title), and has 500 million in advertising budget.

ngc: has nintendo name recognition, and some titles with powerful name recognition as well, also a lower selling point, but Nintendo sounds like the same ol\' company, with a lack in 3rd party support leading to fewer known killer apps than ps2. (this may change) Nintendo will be advertising, but if I remember right, their budget is only around 250 million.

This is all based off of launch titles, publicity, etc. But judging by this little breakdown, Sony seems to have the marketing advantage that you say is so key. Its being refered to as a war for a reason, its going to be tough for any one company to walk away with the winning console, let alone do it easily, but right now the Sony with the ps2 has a very large advantage that Nintendo and Microsoft need to address.

this might seam like a weird idea but they shouldn\'t advertise the PS2 come November in the UK ?

WHY ?

well they should go for the HDD and Interned adapter and game ad\'s

the Playsation is a house hold name and they don\'t need to remind everyone thats it\'s out.

what they should do is push ad\'s for killer games like The Devil May Cry
Final Fantasy 10
and
metal Gear solid 2.

yeah big ad\'s ahowing off the game play and other features like they are good at.

Microsoft need to push the Xbox more because its a new console, people know about it but not too much about it (i am talking about JOHNY Gamer who plays games now and then).

put it this way the PS2 is now reconised as a common name.

like Corn Flakes they don\'t need to do much on Ad\'s as most people know the product by now.

Hence the lack of PS2 ad\'s on TV.

Sony have already got it\'s fans.

it\'s just up to the X box to get theirs.
and they will get them.

but for the moment.

Advantage PS2.

Arguments against over Advertising is that people will get sick of your product and could start to resent it.

Thats why it was wise for MS to just have a select few ad\'s (taco Bell was a great idea).

But on the other hand

that shameful PR stunt with the ROCK was the worst attempt at getting the puplic attention i have ever seen.

People have to remeber  Advertising is a can work both ways (GOOD and BAD).

That is N64 was powerful than the PSX but it still fell to the psx which means PS2 will rule over the Gamecube and the Xbox

no it mean the fact that it was more powerful had nothing to do with its demise

it was the fact it was hard to program for which led to its demise - and thats not the case with Xbox
