Title: Quote from Sony Senior VP Jack Tretton..... No price cut.

"We have no plans to reduce our price(pre-Gamecube and Xbox). I think we could sell every unit we manufactor this year at 299$ wihout any problem. Reguardless of what our competitors to do in terms of pricing and release dates, that doesnt change our stategy."

A little ****y, I like that.

But they should reduce the price in Europe. Over here it`s much more than 299$. People over here would be happy about a 299$ price.

Indeed, he could sell tons of machines here if they lowered the price to $299. But hell, they sold almost as many here as in the US, even though it\'s $150 more ($450 for the math impaired).

Isn\'t the Euro price high cause of your goofy taxes??

I did some checking..... Geez!!! Denmark has a 25% sales tax (VAT). Talk about getting raked over the coals.

Here in the US we have sales taxes from 0 to 9%:) Depending on what STATE you live in.

Look here--> LINK (http://www.worldtaxpayers.org/statvat.htm)

So.... The PS2 at $325 (US appx, after taxes) would cost about $375 (Denmark with Value Added Tax)

Well.. That\'s still about $125 short of the $450 you say Samwise. Is there another tax you have that I don\'t know of??

Aha I figured it out. Y\'all paying over $300 in Europe and wherever have taxes and the US Dollar exchange rate to blame---not Sony.

Exchange rate link-->http://www.x-rates.com/tables/USD.html

Example:

The AU is worth 1/2 of the dollar, so naturally since Sony bases retail pricing on the Dollar, you will need twice as many AU dollars to equall $300.... TADA!! That comes to $600 (plus any taxes and such)

Denmark\'s currency (I assume the Euro??) is worth 8/10ths of the US Dollar. That would make the PS2 $360 (300+2/10). Then add the VAT(25%) to the $360 and you come to exactly $450

Man... I\'m so damn smart:D

So you see. Sony is selling it\'s machine at $299 world wide, but taxes and exchange rates (against the US dollar) make some of you pay way more.. Sorry, take it up with your Government:D

Lol, quite a bit of errors here and there. Sweden has pretty high taxes yes, but NOT 80%. That\'s just insane.

And the $700-something in Australia is in AUD, not USD. But it\'s still more than in the US, of course.

We Danes use Danish Crownes and our currency (Danske Kroner, DKR in Danish). And yes, we have a 25% VAT + high income taxes... some people like it, others don\'t. Personally I\'d prefer lower taxes and a higher amount of (I can\'t think of the right word) "self payment". But we don\'t pay for nothing. We have free medical care, the schools are free (that includes college/university), you get payed to study, you get money if you\'re out of a job, you get money when you get old etc. But for someone living in the States it must seem pretty weird because it\'s so fundamentally different from their system. Personally I\'d like a mix between the two systems. Lower taxes than here, but better "social security" than there. Ah well, can\'t have it all. :)

EDIT:
I\'ve seen PS2\'s here lately for sub-$400, so it\'s getting better. ;)

What do you expect this guy to say.

If they announce a price break then all those people thinking of buying a PS2 today or in the near future decide to wait. Thats bad business

There will be a significant price break for the Christmas season, I find it impossible to believe they wouldn\'t drop the price for obviousd reasons

So much for waiting for a price cut.  Damn buggers and their relatively cheap, but goddamn addictive systems!!!

In sweden the work provider takes off 30% of the pay and send it to the "government". Then the worker gets the check and send another 30% to the "government".
So it is about 50% tax.

As far as I know the PS2 is 4500 SEK here in Sweden (including 25% VAT), that equals to $450+ (including 25% VAT), and that is a crazy price for a console.

Some places in the US have taxes like that. Tennesee has 20% sales tax. But this is usually for a reason, for example, in tennesee there is next to no property tax.

ddaryl- Sony always announces fall price cuts at E3. The only reason it\'s being denied, is it won\'t happen. Sony\'s succeeded so far despite it\'s c0ckiness, and it probably will continue to do so....
