Title: Why is this in every Hollywood movie?
Post by: Bossieman on June 13, 2001, 07:42:27 AM
When people are talking in the Phone in movies, when they quit they don´t say good bye or anything they just hang on. here in Sweden we say Good bye, see you later or something. Do people in the states just hang on?I really needs to know.

We say goodbye as well.  Never noticed people hanging on the phone before in movies.  Have to keep an eye out.  Or an ear....

Other nitpicks...

When people in movies hang up on the other side, you can hear dial tone. That doesn\'t happen with the phones anymore. All you hear is dead air.

Why are phone numbers always 555-xxxx?

Its because no phone numbers exist that begin with 555.  If there was a, say 765 number than people would try to call it.

Haha yeah, phone numbers are always 555-XXXX. And it\'s true how they always hang up without saying bye or anything. Quite weird. :)

Movies and television shows omit telephone ettiquette for at least these two reasons:

1.  Some screenwriters/producers/directors think it\'s unnecessary and slows down their otherwise "fast paced" story.  In reality their story is crap and could use a dose of believability anyway.

2.  It makes it easier to edit the scene together later if you don\'t have much in the way of opening and closing conversational ettiquette.  Usually they don\'t record both halves of the conversation on the set, and even the primary actor\'s dialog is looped later.  If the actor\'s dialog is as vague as possible, the director can record anything he wants for the other half of the conversation, and make it as brief or as long as he wants.

BTW, some rebel directors DO NOT use 555-xxxx numbers!  I love to see this, but it\'s very rare.  I\'ll have to look for some examples.

I hate it when they let the phone ring 16 times before answering.  As if anyone would stay on the phone past 3 rings , b/c everyone knows on ring 4 the answering machine picks up.

I\'ve also seen that more often than not in movies the good guy wins...

The reason every movie uses 555-xxxx is because it\'s a reserved number for movies so when fans hear the phone number on a movie they might think that it\'s there actual number so if they are some psyhco stalker they will go home and try to ring them.
Or so I have been told.

Anybody notice how Hollywood always uses Apple computers?  Be it an Imac, Ibook, or G4 Hollywood always uses Apples.  There are a few that don\'t use Apples, but the far majority do use them.

another thing about phone conversations, in particularly bad movies, when they ring up the police or an ambulance, SOMETIMES they don\'t actually leave an address OR a name, doesn\'t happen often but I have seen it. Very funny stuff that.

What I hate more than the phone thing, is when in a movie or TV they need a specific page in a 1000000000 page book. So they open it straight up and there it is. OR directors get a bit more technical, and they make them flip about 5 pages before they get to it.... grrrrr

I don\'t know why that annoys me either

hahaha

I\'d say it\'s cos they\'re all stylish and slick looking.... or maybe they\'ve gotten a hold of apple and paid them to use them. Or maybe it\'s cos Apple\'s are awesome :) Or maybe it\'s cos i cant think of another reason

The reason is that the vast majority of Hollywood screenwriters, producers, directors, and actors use Apples exclusively.  If you go into any cafe in this part of LA and count the number of laptops in use, the Apples will outnumber the PCs by a fair margin.  That\'s the only reason; they like Apples so they put them in them movie.  It\'s totally stupid.  I think it\'s really funny when you see a scene in some top secret US government base, and all the technicians are typing away on Apples.  HAH HAH I\'ve worked for a Federal agency, and I can tell you they do not buy Apples for ANY reason.

Recently, more often on commmercials and tv shows, Gatway computers are used too.  (now that the imac craze is dying down, Gateway probably got the idea from apple for the "subliminal advertising")
