Title: Now that Sony has locked the Console market what\'s next for them.........
Post by: tHe GaMe on June 13, 2001, 04:21:00 PM
Many have specualted that Sony might indeed go into the handheld market and just take a little bit of the market maybe 25% of it from Nintendo.

http://boards.ign.com/message.asp?topic=6655665&page=1

Could you imagine a Sony handheld, here the debate on that forum and reply in here.

Here is an idea from Drek717 over at the IGN Boards.

Sony could make a handheld, and it could be an increadable success. Sure, Nintendo has the handheld market dominated, but its not a huge enough market right now, leaving a niche. All sony has to do is come out with a killer product with killer games, and they could do very nicely in america, as well as japan. (japan is more open to new handhelds by the way, neo geo is still going over there, and the wonderswan is bringing some **** to nintendo). All they really need to do is this.

1. use the psx chipset. the ps2 has a full featured scaled down psx chipset already in it, that\'d be easy to stick into a portable. No cost in hardware r&d, then they just need to make it consume less power, not hard compared to some of the things sony has made. Also, slightly enhance the design, touch up the amount of ram, maybe go 64 bit with less mhz processor, that\'d save a lot of power.

2. use mini disc format for it, or some killa memory sticks. No need for a power sucking disc drive. Use small memory sticks for the storage format, then you don\'t have to splurge on a mini disc write feature in there.

3. instead of using a d pad or analog sticks, reinvent the d pad. I\'d recommend a black circle, but depending on how far away from center you move your thumb, the greater degree you move to. Something like this was created on the NES, not analog, but was a really cool controller after getting used to it.

4. advertise, and first thing you do, port the best psx games to it, there you go, a huge first gen lineup.

5. DO NOT GO BACKLIT! This is a power leach, no need for that, however, give a contrast adjustment feature.

There you have it, the way for sony to get into the handheld market. Right now a ps1 chipset costs less than half the system\'s price. Seriously, they could easily get this out for a hundred bucks, damn, some of the cd players they have out would cost them more, oh, and kick in mini disc playback as an extra, then they\'ll sell some mini disc recorders for a change.

This Oliver guy makes a good point.

"I AM A PRODUCT DESIGNER AND YOU ALL DON\'T KNOW WHAT YOU ARE TALKING ABOUT. Power consumtion is of upmost importance. 3D processors would eat batteries. Backlite screens would eat batteries i.e. digital cameras. Any form of disc drive eats batteries. Nintendo have optimised their machine perfectly so shut up and be happy with it. "

will you stop taking crap from the ps2 ign boards? they are totally crap! (well, most of what they have there)

and you cannot say that sony as a "lock on the console market"two of its biggest competiors have not even launched yet!!
will you stop making threads that have things like "now that sony has won the console war" or "now that the ps2 has beaten the x box, will its dominance be good for the industry"
why do i ask that you stop? i ask youto stop becaue what you are saying is false, and i like to have a non- biased forum. its much MUCH better that way.

please stop posting non stop sony biased crap! i like sony myself, but i dont like it when i see bias on these boards. its not good for the forum, and believe me, its not good for youre reputation.

i also noticed that you love to jump on ethugg, and jumpman. you start flaming them the second you see one of their posts.(sometimes  you dont even read them:))

Im pretty sure that the most of the regulars here would back me up.

I dont care what anybody else says but when SONY said they were releasing their "handheld" before it wasn\'t even as great as a VMU, and it was only released in Japan. SONY already let me down with PocketStation, so I dont even care what they try to make cuz it will blow.

Me got 1400 posts!!! I think sony should just concentrate on home consoles cause as a few people in here (not many) seem to believe that sony has already won. But no they havent, it\'s looking good for sony so far but Nintendo and Xbox still have a good chance of success.

So I say sony shouldnt worry about the handheld market yet. I\'m happy with nintendo having dominence there.

You guys know I will defend any console as long as it is being attacked by an opposing fsnoby. I feel it is my duty to let these ingrates know where their opinons stand.

Sony has no market locked other than the \'over-rated electronics\' department. Sega probably had 10 million or so Genesis/Mega-Drives out when SNES launched, yet SNES still sold plenty. Don\'t count anyobe out. Sony has already shown to have made some mistakes. People are getting more and more excited about the next big things and they care less and less about theirs and my dusty PS2s.

That is just my opinion. The Game is sonding like an idiot lately. Perhaps a younger, kid brother is using his name?

and jumpman, with all respect, why do you post in a PS2 forum while you are a nintendo fanboy?  go play zelda.. and leave us adults alone.

Further proof tHe GaMe is a MoRoN. While a Sony handheld would be cool, the title of this thread is retarded. I feel like more brain cells are dying ever time GaMe posts.... I know I shouldn\'t read them, but I keep hoping he might wise up. Guess that\'s not gonna happen...

His declaration in the threads title is stated in a fact-like manner.

And Zelda\'s not just for kids. It\'s obvious by your siding with GaMe, you don\'t fall into that \'us adults\' category.

Maybe Sony will release a new Pocket Staion. But I don\'t think that it will be a handheld like GBA but with cool features like memory card, second screen for the DualShock2, little fun games, downloads from internet.................I have a dream.............

First off, this is one reason I like posting at IGN boards they respect everything that I post, they respect my ideas and they don\'t go riping on them.  I thought this was a PS2 board where we posted Sony stuff not crap about the XBox and Gamecube.  Infact those folks at the XBox.ign.com boards also respect my opinions.

Why rip on Sony, they are good console makers, and they may have, I said my have the console market already locked, maybe I should have said that at the beginning but with a 10 Million Userbase who can stop you and it took only 8 or 9 months to achieve that.  That\'s history making.

Anyway\'s never say not to Sony becuz they may just do it, they are very unpredictable, maybe even Microsoft may enter it.  Maybe if I had put Microsoft trying to make a handheld you probaly would not have ripped on it.  You people are pathetic, now I must go back to the IGN Boards for awhile until this stupid place matures.

Well I have changed a little, but I have always like Sony, but when I bought my PS2 at first I had doubts and wanted to take it back, but when I heard all about those great AAA games coming out for the PS2, I was soooooo siked about Sony.  And I\'m never buying another console, maybe a gamecube, but no Xbox.  Xbox is almost like the PS2, they are getting Silent Hill 2 a little latter down the rode, why should I buy a game that was already on the PS2?????Anyways like I said Sony has proved to me that they are all about games, and they are proving it every month.

NBA Street
Twisted Metal: Black all in the same month, damn

GT3 in July, damn.......God I love Sony.

I\'d laugh if Sony even thought of gettin\' in the hand-held market. That is one market that Sony or anyone else can\'t touch for quite awhile. Nintendo has the strongest userbase with the Gameboy, Gameboy Pocket, Gameboy color and now Gameboy Advance. For 12 years, Nintendo has dominated the handheld market, even when other companies like Sega had superior handheld systems. Until something drastic happens and Nintendo loses its \'magic\' hold on the handheld market, I don\'t forsee anyone entering the market and stealing the limelight away from the GBA--that includes Sony.

Entering the handheld market, would result in loss of money, a failed product (something no company wants on their repuation). Not a wise buisness move on Sony\'s part and I would imagine they are aware of this. They had it easy with the Psone. Both Nintendo and Sega was making their own mistakes, so Sony the newcomer just came in and filled that gap, thus making the Psone the mainstream console it is today. They wouldn\'t have such an advantage in the handheld market. Instead, they would launch to a market that is fully dominated by one company and has been for 12 years.

On another note; the suggestions that they should just scale down the Psone to fit in a handheld. Can you imagine the batteries all that would suck? You can\'t have all the power without the cost of something and that would be battery power. Then there was the idea to port the original Psone games to the handheld. Here is a problem for that. The Psone controller has eight action buttons. At most, you can fit six on a handeld, and even then you are pushing limits, so as you can see this is goin\' to pose some control issues for quite a few games.

And, I\'d also like to say this on a personal level. I don\'t want Sony in the handheld market. Sony was the company that pushed this \'everything has to be 3D\' notion with developers. But, right now, with the GBA and what not, handhelds are the last resort of 2D gaming. I would bet Sony would try to get developers to make 3D handheld games, thus ushering in the end of 2D games for good.
:(

Yes, I\'m alittle paranoid about my 2D games dissappearing.

Sony will never succeed with a handheld. How can you cheaply fit at least a 3 inch screen, disc drive AND save slot, have it run on a couple of AA\'s for 12 hours and still cost less than $200 and not having the thing look freakish? Not gonna happen, Nintendo owns the handheld industry and probably will forever. Even Microsoft can\'t hope to beat Gameboy:)
