\'sup y\'all, I\'m bored and have Greek/Roman Mythology on my brain. So here\'s a pop quiz for everyone interested (add in your own quiz if you want!):
QUIZ #1:
1) Which god had his liver continuosly eaten by an eagle?
2) Which Nymph was turned into a cow?
3) Which god is known as the "earth-shaker" ?
4) Which goddess was born from Zeus\'s head?
5) Which goddess is referred to as Cow-eyed?
Extra credit: Who was the first Werewolf?
-
I have a quiz
1) What the hell are you talking about?
2) why would zeus deliver a child , and why would this child come from his head?
3) Well most likeley all the gods had sex wit animals and thats why these cow eyed , eagle , werewolf children exist!
-
Here you go Deadly Hamster:
First, I was bored; second, Zeus thought that if the child was all his, she would be more loyal to him (and she was); Third, I\'m pretty sure that the gods only mated with other gods and humans, not animals, although they did change people into animals and disguised themselves as animals from time to time. I\'ll give the answers to the quiz when some people try to answer, and shed some more light on your querstions.
-
light on your querstions.
Did you just call my questions queer?
-
oops! my bad! sorry \'bout that.
-
ok caus if you took offense to my questions i was just joking
-
I have no idea, must brush up on my history.
*nO-One goes to watch Disney\'s Hercules* :p j/k
-
1) Prometheus was not a god and it was a vulture.
4) Athena, which would explain why she is the Goddess of Wisdom.
-
Ok Ashford, Promethius is a god, of the Olympian generation at that. He is son of the Titans Iapetos and Clymene. His brothers include Atlas and Epimetheus. Zeus is his cousin. And it was Zeus who punished him. The bird was an eagle, the bird representation of Zeus. Promethius is immortal, that\'s how he survived the liver pecking, because he could not die. In any event, yes number 1 is Promethius.
Athena is the correct answer to number 4, but she is known as the goddes of wisdom because she was concieved in the goddess Wisdom, then transplanted into Zeus\'s head.
-
Prometheus wasn\'t a god in the sense of one of the 12 Gods of Olympus. I forgot what he was. A Titan? I know he was immortal but immortality don\'t make you a god.
But while we\'re at it....
1) Which 2 Gods/Goddesses are twins?
2) Who are Aphrodite\'s husband and lover?
3) What fruit did Persephone eat in the underworld and what significance does it bode?
4) What ritual did Gods/Goddesses perform to turn mortals into immortals?
5) Why did Hera hate Hercules?
-
There\'s confusion between an Olympian god, and the 12(14) gods of Olympus. According to Hesiod and Ovid (They came before Homer) there are about 40 Olympian gods (they were descendants of the Titan gods)
No, Promethius was not a god of Olympus, but he was an "Olympian" god.
Ashfords Answers:
1 Artemis and Apollo are twins
2 Aphrodite\'s husband is Hephaestus, and her lover is Aeres.
5 Hercules was a son of a mortal woman, Hera was jeolus!
Here\'s my next set of questions (the ones not answered yet are carried over)
A) Which Nymph was turned into a cow (Hint: an ancester of Hercules)?
B) Which god is known as the "earth-shaker" (Hint: his animal is the horse)?
C) Which goddess is referred to as Cow-eyed (Hint: Her animal is the pea****)?
D) Who was the first Werewolf (Hint: there is a search engine named after him)?
E) What fruit did Persephone eat in the underworld and what significance does it bode?
F) What ritual did Gods/Goddesses perform to turn mortals into immortals?
G) What river god do the gods of Olympus take an oath over?
H) Which constellation represents Callisto?
Um, I try to type in pea**** but the end gets blocked out. It\'s a bird with large tail feathers, in most zoos.
-
Oh god, reading all this about gods is giving me a headache, the week before school let out we had just finished reading the Odyssey. That was a loooooooong book and I failed a good 2 or 3 quizes on it.
-
All I know is Prometheus was a god but when he gave humans fire he turned into a mortal.
-
So what "writers" and translators is everybody reading? This will probably clear up the whole Promethius thing. I\'ve read recently:
M.L. West\'s translation of Hesiod\'s "Theogony" and "Works and Days"
Grene and Lattimore\'s translation of Aeschylus\'s "Promethius Bound"
Rolf Humphries translation of Ovid\'s "Metamorphoses"
Let me just say right now that if your information is based on a movie or television show you should probably read at least some mythology. TV and movies, as always, bend facts and change around a lot of stuff in order to a) make it more appealing to the audiance and b) save budget on costumes, and crazy god-like stunts.
Wouldn\'t it be cool to have a game based on some Greek/Roman mythology?
Oh, and within the next month I will hope to have finished Euripides "Medea;" Aeschylus\'s "Agamemnon;" Sophocles\'s "Oedipus the King" and "Antigone;" Euripides\'s "Hippolytus;" Appollonus\'s "The Voyage of Argo;" and Homer\'s "Iliad" and "Odyssey." Well, maybe TWO months. :)

That\'s right! Lycaon was the first werewolf! So how come Lycos is advertised as a dog???

Prometheus. . . it was a vulture.
Prometheus was chewed on by an eagle, Tityos (a giant that raped Leto) was chewed on by a vulture (2 actually).
-
I love the mythology but those questions are very very hard... put the solution later.

Palma Granite Seeds! You can\'t stay away from the underworld for very long. (She comes up for about half the year, giving us Spring and Summer, but then has to return giving us Fall and Winter.)

Still no one has answered #1. As i said it is very hard! :D

A little off subject of the q/a but I found that this little game might be of interest to the peeps of this thread.

Age of Mythology
Previewed by Avi Fryman
This is the dawning of the Age of Mythology.
One of the most promising PC titles on display at E3 was Ensemble Studios\' Age of Mythology, a real-time strategy game that will transport players to that groovy time when heroes battled with monsters and gods intervened in mortal men\'s affairs. Featuring an impressive 3D graphics engine, rich, detailed environments, a unique blend of Greek, Nordic, and Egyptian mythologies, and a vast array of game options, this title has plenty going for it, even in its unfinished state.
Aside from the much-heralded presence of the minotaur (you go, minotaur!), the game features a slew of AI options, map types, game variations, story-based campaigns, detailed civilizations, multiplayer modes, and a variety of settings geared towards suiting the needs of novice players and experienced fans of the RTS genre. A random map generator ensures massive replayability, though the initial modes will keep you plenty busy.
If you heed the wishes of the gods (get the groceries, massage my feet, build an empire), you may successfully petition them for favors. For example, persuade Ra to strike the center of an enemy\'s city with a meteor, or convince Thor or Hercules to strut their stuff in classic bad boy style.
If only this sort of thing worked in the real world. I\'d enlist Zeus to zap Mariah Carey with a hearty bolt of lightning for the cultural sin of mutilating Phil Collins\' Against All Odds theme song. Bad Mariah! Bad!
Alas, such joys are limited to the game realm, but pelting a village of enemies with comets always makes for a good time, so who\'s complaining? Reinforcing your human army with griffins, giants, cyclops, and at least 20 other uniquely talented mythological creatures, is also good for kicks. As if that\'s not enough, you can also seek out hidden treasures, such as the Golden Fleece and Hade\'s Helm of Invisibility while traveling across vast terrain, over rough seas, or through creepy underworld domains, all of which look amazing.
The animation and graphic effects are impressive, and the strategic elements of the game are considerably deep, though not daunting. The game\'s extreme attention to detail will be familiar to fans of the Age of Empires series, upon which this title builds its many strengths. Though I must reserve final judgement until a complete version of the game is in my hands, the time I spent with it at E3 certainly piqued my interest. Keep an eye out for Age of Mythology in spring 2002.

I hope it does justice!
