Post by: TheGeezer on June 21, 2001, 08:31:40 AM
so what type of PC would be required to match the PS2 out of intereest in terms of performance?

there is no PC chip that is equal the Emotion Engine in the PS2.
Memorybandwith too smal on the PC
Memory to slow.
Windows.

Nuff said.

LOL!

I dont think there is a computer processor fast enough to match the EE...

But comparing PC and PS2 is like comparing a melon to an apple. :)

I dont know..

Floating point performance?
or windows performance? :D

I would say a 2 GIG P3 would do it, although they
don\'t make P3 at that speed. I don\'t know about a P4...

A quote from the FAQ section for Baulders Gate Dark Alliance (programmers):

Q: What are you doing with the Playstation 2 hardware? Are you doing things that can’t be done on other consoles or on the PC?

A: The envioronmental effects working in BG: Dark Alliance would bring your friend\'s fastest PC to a crawl. It could be years until the PC can do all of the things that you\'ll see in BG: Dark Alliance.

....hehehe...:)

Bossieman, forgive me for going beyond ‘nuff said, the implications are staggering

CygnusXI, your quotes have inspired me to perform a doggerel feat

PC games of yesteryear
prepare to meet thy doom
See now! The PS2 is here!
For thou there\'ll be scant room

I think it\'s a bit premature to proclaim that PC games will meet their doom.  Counter-Strike is a perfect example.  Without the open structure of the PC and the Half-Life engine it was created for, mods like Counter-Strike would be impossible.  The PS2 is too expensive for amateurs to develop for.  Oh by the way... CS is the greatest multiplayer game ever created.  While PCs may be technologically inferior, you don\'t need all that extra power to make a great game.

yeah, the pc is easy to develop for, and  in turn that makes for some could be great games. with some horrible ones, of course..
counter-strike, Warcraft, Age of Empires are some of the pc\'s greatest games.

while some of the worst (on the pc) are well... here\'s a link ;)

http://pc.ign.com/reviews/10455.html

http://pc.ign.com/reviews/11834.html

both links are hilarious, but the first one is the best :D

the pc and ps2 cannot be accurately compared, for the pc runs totally different programs than the ps2 would, and the ps2 is made for polygons, not bits.

hope you enjoy those reviews, they are great.

Other than AGP slots and the speed issue I think its really close.  I mean lets look at Giants on PS2 verses the PC with a Geforce 3.

The AGP slot is the weakest link and then you do have an OS, then USB, etc taking from the processor.

The Geforce 3 chip in itself is superior to that of the core of the PS2 even if the Pentium 3 / Athlon is not.

The Xbox is superior to both platforms, but don\'t worry boys.  IA64 is coming out and nothing on that chip alone can beat it. :)  Put an IA64 chip on a next generation high bandwidth bus and put a Geforce 5 on it and you might as well call it a day. :)

Intel\'s latest statement is that by 2007, they will have an IA-64 chip (EPIC - Next generation Son of McKinley chip and NOT MERCED) running at 20 Gigahertz.

Mckinley running at 20 Ghz, forget about it boys. :)

Docwiz,

Incase you didn\'t notice, he was referring to PCs today. Not what Intel has down the line in 5 years. I love my PC, but they are rather pathetic.

1000mhz w/a GeForce 2 and a ton of games still have low performance.

I was under the impresion that the Geforce 3 was the best of the best.  Is this true or is this bull****?

It depends.
The geforce 3 is optimized for 1600x1200 res. The geforce 2 is optimized for 800x600 res. The GF2 is faster than the GF3 at 800x600.
The GF3 is a very good chip but you need high bandwith between the CPU and the GF3 to be able to use the GF3 power. Current PC doesnt have this.
But if we put in a EE and some PS2 architecture and the GF3 then you could just call it a day.......... OVERKILL BIGTIME!

Lets remember while we look at the two versions of Giants the one for PS2 should be considered a 1st generation PORT of a PC title (ok, maybe 1.5 But it\'s still a port and damn early in the life of the console).

If past performance is any indication, in 2007 the chip inside the year and a half older PS3 will smoke whatever Intel has to offer by then without breaking a sweat.

Ahhh, that\'s a long ways off, "forget about it boys" is right
