DO NOT buy a COMPAQ. They are horrible. There is more reasons then I can list on why Compaq systems are directly from HELL.

I am not personally fond of GateWay, after workin\' on them. But, some people swear by them.

DELL isn\'t so bad. You could do worse.

I personally have an IBM Aptivia and it works perfect. I also own a CTX which was \'crapola\' until I replaced every part in it. Then, there is my Imac which I love and adore.

Build your own.  Only when YOU select the parts will you know that no one\'s cutting corners on you.  You can also have the pride of knowing that Schlotzky PCs are the best.

well i got a gateway but i won\'t swear by it - Gateway**** - ok so i was wrong :) - yea i know it was corny

anyway - my gateway is fine

Dells are pretty good

Hp/Compaqs - been there hated that

well like they said when you make your own which i am in the process of doing then you have no doubts about it and it just feels good too

I like Dell.  There are companies online.  If you like to design but not build your own system you could try a place like Directron (http://www.directron.com).

yeah but if im building my computer and i forget that to correctly install the directrix protocal to output cxy then i need to reconnect the gravitron bisingular device to the reverse cuplinked transistor labeled6548254 but not the one labeled6548255 then i will have the confidence and state of mind that all schlotzky computers will suck @$$

:D

Heh heh, it\'s not that hard.  Of course everything is relative... for some people, programming the VCR clock is difficult, and for others flying an F-16 is easy.  Life is a learning process, and the more you learn about the tools you depend on, the more confident you\'ll be in using them.

BTW, there are many websites around that tell you how to buy and assemble a PC from separate components.  All you need is a screwdriver!  No soldering required.  I really think you\'d be surprised how simple it is.

There are places that will build a pc for you and you can just pick out the parts.  But the advantage of buying Dell/Gateway/Falcon is warranty.

want the headache of messing/fixing/going places if it
F-ups...  :D

Gateway was the worst choice I could have ever made.

1) Because of the way Gateway ships it\'s computers, UPS can\'t accurately track your computer, it is usually grouped with others that live near you.  They lost my first compueter, had to send another one.

2) The salseman told me of some features I didn\'t "really" need, so I didn\'t get them.  Later, when I wanted them, I had to buy the parts seperately from other distributers.

3) My computer has crashed 4 times, I lost all of my files four times.  (My Compaq never crashed once.)

4) I get unusual error messages, the free help service can\'t get rid of them, but a specialised crew I would have to PAY for might be able to help.

5) My computer is LOUD, the DVD rom, everything is louder than any other computer I have heard.

6) I\'m very limited into my expansion abilities.

I could go on if you want me to.  Just heed my advice, be prudent in your choice, especially in Gateway.

Dell provides all the workstation pc\'s in my company and they give me a corporate rate.  They give everyone 3-yr next-business day warranty.  That means if you FUBAR your PC, they\'ll fly to your house in a plane and fix it, the PC not the plane. Dell is usually cheaper than Gateway.  I own 3 PCs from them, and no problems.

800 MGHz Pentium III
30 Gig HD
4 point surround sound w/ subwoofer
19" Monitor
Windows 98 (the source of many of my problems)
DVD drive

I added a CD-RW, have the expansion bays for one more, but no where to plug it in!!!
I had to add in the second set of speakers outsaide of Gateway, they wouldn\'t help me.  (Same with the ethernet adaption card.)  Had to add the CD-RW myself too.  Got an early version of GE-Force II, could have paid $20 more when I got the comp to get the standard version, but the salesman told me not to worry about it, I now wish I had gotten the other one.

Oh well.  People always hear the good news of using a company, I\'m just here to give an example on what can happen if you\'re not so lucky.  Something I put so much money into should not go bad.  But it does.

Sounds like a great system, did you pay more then $2000 for it? I was just wondering if their customer service and parts change according to the cost of the computer shipped out. The last 2 PC\'s i bought from them were the latest-greatest, so the cost was huge.
Each one was above 3K, i got a Gateway P-90 7 years ago and it runs real good to this day. I never had to call customer service/support or anyone else for that matter. Or maybe their service/quality went down in the last 4 years, that was the last time i bought a new PC from them. ...

After months of agonising calls to customer service (I stopped counting after 30), and 4 times having to format the drive and re-install windows I\'ve finally got my system to stabalize.  (Knock on wood.)  I got it almost two years ago, a little over 3K.  I don\'t think it was worth all the stress, funny how they never mentioned the months of stress this computer would add to my already hectic life.

What do you mean, "no where to plug it in?"  Were you having trouble with the power cable, the IDE cable, or the audio cable?  With only a DVD-rom drive in place, you should have had no problems.

I\'ve run out of "connections" for the IDE cable after I installed my CD-RW.
