Title: NE1 have their PS2 hooked to a HDTV?
Post by: RamonGTP on June 24, 2001, 02:25:29 PM
How does it look? I went from composite to S-video and the difference was pretty substantial. I\'m in need of a new tv and I was thinking about getting a sony HDTV with component inputs and i\'m curious to know if there is a noticable improvment going from s-video on the PS2 to the component video. Thanks for any input.

My whole projection system is based around HD.  It really has nothing to do with the PS2 though.  I think a lot of the HD units have line doublers built into them to upconvert the 540i signal.  I\'m sure it would look nice though.

On another note, HD kicks serious butt.  Wega is not an HD unit.  There is a huge difference between looking damn good and Holy Shizit, that looks incredible.

Anyone who spends more than a grand on a standard def tv is a total loser.  Hi Def is going to really get into gear this year.  ABC is adding several shows.  CBS is adding there daily soaps (Young and the restless) along with their already strong nightly line-up.  They are also adding NCAA football to their line-up.  Marc Cuban is starting a 24 hour sports HD station.  HBO, and Showtime both have HD.

You will never want to watch crappy 540i 4X3 tv ever again when you see it.  Except for of course Crank and Chrome weekly on TNN.  (Had to throw in a plug)

Just curious, but what are your feelings on the XBR line?
And what is the defining element between true HD and HD "compatible". Excuse my ignorance, but is HD "compatible" capable of the high resolutions(depending on the source), but requires an separate tuner(ATSC,?!)? Your opinion would be much appreciated.

Hmmm...I know not all WEGA tvs are hd.  Some are and they are called XBR.  But they are stillin 4 x 3 size format....not 16 x 9.  meaning the resolution is about 1280 x 1024...great for 1280 x 720p but you will get squashed 1920 x 1080i pictures.
Unless you could buy $8,000 price tag 34" widescreen Flat tube WEGA that is HDTV.  I don\'t think it work that much.  Panasonic have widescreen 34" tv and it flat and high definition with only $3,500.  Components video input included but no VGA input.

I wonder why did the engineers pick the component over VGA connector?  component come in 3 seperates cable which kind of took too much space.  comparing component video cables to VGA is like comparing composite to S-video.  Seriously.

Hopefully tomorrow I will be able to post my experience using the PS2 with my my new Toshiba 65" widescreen projection TV.  The television is HD compatible, but as you surmised, it requires an external HD decoder to run in HD mode.  I don\'t have access to a High Definition signal now, so I don\'t really care about that feature yet.

As for the PS2:  As Videoholic said, HD capability in the television is irrelevant because the PS2 output is strictly interlaced 480i (or is it 540i... I don\'t get that).  In any case, it\'s standard NTSC video resolution.

I\'ll give you the gist of my upcoming post:  If you\'re going to buy a high quality TV, especially with a 16:9 aspect ratio screen, you\'ll need a new DVD player.  The PS2 is such a poor DVD player, I consider it unusable for anything except 4:3 video material like DVD versions of television programming.

P.S.:  Videoholic, please read the topic "Tech Question, Please Help" in the Off-Topic forum.

I\'m sorry, yes, 480i.  I was tired last night.

And you have tons of HD content in LA.  First off you have the OTA of all the networks.  Then you can either get Dish Network or Direct TV.

Oh and HD TV Compatible is I think just saying it\'s capable of the resolution, but no tuner.

And for those of you scoring at home, there is a huge difference between saying a TV is digital and saying a TV is HD.

I was at Circuit City the other day looking around and I saw a 60" widescreen HD set and my jaw literally dropped.  The picture was so freaking amazing.

I have a question, can digital HDTV be compressed anymore to get the results of 1080p @ 60hz?  It works with analog but digital signal, it went pixel by pixel.  Information is a lot.  Anyway to compressed it anymore to make it 1080p?

I am surprised they had real HD on it.  I have never been in a circuit city or a Best Buy where they actually had HD running on their HD sets.  I asked the guy if he sold many.  When he said not really I told him I\'m not surprised.  CC and BB have the biggest idiots running their tv sections.  You have to go to high end stores to look around.  Those are the people who can make you an informed buyer.

I saw what looked to me like a HD demo at a Good Guys here in LA.  They were using a demo laserdisk that contained segments of a football game, a few television shows (King of Queens, Nash Bridges, etc) and some nature photography.  I could have been mistaken, but it looked to me like the displays were running in 1080i (HD) mode.

I actually saw true hd running on a sony 56 inch 16*9 ratio digital projection at a local stereo shop. They must have has the hd tuner hooked up to it. It was truly amazing. The detail is beyond anything i have ever seen. now all they have to do is start making movies in high definition :) currently i believe dvd is considered medium definition
