"IBM has created a new transistor capable of operating at clock speeds in excess of 200GHz.
Chips based on the transistor are at least two years off, and even then you\'re looking at 100GHz parts. They will also be aimed at embedded applications, specifically communications roles, such as wireless and optical networking. It will be some time before this technology makes its way to the desktop.
Still, the headline clock speed is impressive, and IBM, stung presumably by Intel\'s announcement of a 0.02 micron transistor, is quick to boast that it will get to 100GHz four years sooner than "recently-announced competitive approaches".
So how\'s will it achieve this goal? The transistor is based on a silicon germanium (SiGe) compound, rather nthan regular chip silicon. IBM has been working with this material, which has far better electrical properties than ordinary silicon, for some time. Big Blue claims that a 210GHz chip using its new SiGe transistor will draw just 1mA of current and consume less than half the power of today\'s chips."

wow thats powerful, i cant believe how far computers have come
thx for the info

They haven\'t made a processor at 200Ghz+
They only made a transistor capeble of operating at those clock speeds, usually they would melt in about 1/2 a second or less.

excited about having PC parts in YOUR next console?
so am i.

200GHZ??????? My God! It would do a game 4 or 5 times more powerful (graphics) than the Final Fantasy Movie !
Great! The next years will be amazing :D

Umm... PS3= The BIG engine that could?
Yeah, but cryotech is working on stuff to PREVENT the melting of processors. While computers, and moore\'s law, the sky is NOT the LIMIT

The last years we\'ve been sayin the current year would
be amazing. Somehow things allways turn out to be a bit less than hoped for. ( PS2 in some ways..... )

I agree. But tech goes very fast in this time. Look back to 80´s: the most powerful pc had got 10 Mhz. Now, we´re speaking of a 200GHZ for about 2005. Realize in all History the men have made only a evolution of 10 Mhz. Now, in 10 years, a evolution of 199,9 GHZ :D :D
We can´t know how the pc´s or consoles will be in a near future... but I know they will be more powerful that we can imagine, sure ;)

Wow...:sconf:....looks like nobody can possibly comprehend the magnificence of what the human brain is capable of. We\'ve come a long way. Can\'t wait to see more of their progress. :) I read more about their "project" in a Popular Science magazine. Their really kicking butt on this one. I heard from a business article that when the Xbox starts making some decent money, Sony\'s new console will be released...:D So for Microsoft\'s sake, they better do d*** well with their new system. Thanks for the article man.

Last I heard Cryotech had a classic Athlon running stable (and OC\'ed) at -40°c,haven\'t really been following them.
But todays processors can melt.If you start a Thunderbird without actice cooling it has a maximum of 8 seconds to live.

OMFG!! 200ghz??!!
WOW!! I don\'t care if its years away, its still great.
A true testament to how far technology has come in a few short years.
Just imagine, in 4-5 years we could be playing games on our ultra fast 200ghz processors, with out super-powerful GeForce 10s(or something), and our 1gbit\\sec internet connections... and thats just PCs. WOW.
And we think 1ghz is fast...

I\'m sure glad IBM is involved in making the PS3:D:D:D:cool:

no way! This gotta be a joke!
Crazy. 200 gigahertz. Then what after gigahertz? Teraflop? Terahertz? Two things that just seems shocking and nearly impossible to be true but it turns out true anyway are that Ken last two years said that the PS3 will be 1000x the performance of ps2,(note: ps2 is about 300x the performance of psx). And the second thing which is a 200 gigahertz. If the ps3 will have 200 ghertz. What will the price tag be? I doubt it will be 200ghertz. Maybe around 3 gigahertz.
