So far, here are some online games that\'s been anounced for PS2:
- Tony Hawk Pro Skater 3
- Tribes 2
- Frequency
- Twisted Metal: Online
- Socom
- Gran Turismo 3: Online
- Final Fantsay XI
- Final Fantasy XII
- NBA2k 2
- NFL2k 2
- PS2\'s 40 GB HDD:
"Sony\'s CEO Kaz Hirai suggested that users of the new hard drive can download episodes of future games into the hard drive, and hinted that developers can develop hybrid games that use DVDs and the hard drive for extra capacity usage. Players will also be able to eventually buy a keyboard and mouse, as well as a high end LCD screen. Also, gamers can use the online capabilities for downloading demos, or parts of games, or to download characters, levels, and new puzzles."
- PS2\'s Network Adapter:
"The PlayStation 2 Network Adapter will be released in November 2001 for $39.95 and will have V90 analog modem, 10/100 Base-TX Ehternet interfaces, while the Hard Disk Drive will be sold seperately."
- PS2\'s Online Partners:
- Macromedia Flash
- Real Player 8
- AOL
- Cisco\'s Ipv4/Ipv6
Fact and Fiction
FICTION:
- PS2\'s Internet will be slow and crappy since they\'re partnering up with AOL.
- You need AOL to use PS2\'s online network.
FACT:
- Sony has teamed up with America Online so it can reach multitudes of users (Unlike the Dreamcast, which was not compatible with AOL). AOL will bring with it established features such as instant messaging, chat, and e-mail, while a PS2 specific Netscape browser is in the works.
- Anyone not wanting to join the club can rest easy in that Sony is making the platform ISP neutral, so you can keep your current provider.
Big thanks to Game Informer Magazine

Right now as i stand, i am all for the Online gaming thing. Though only 2 games i want really support it, and those are Twisted Metal Online, and Tony Hawk 3. Those are the only 2 i really want to play online, all the others are at least renters at best. Not saying EVERYONE has to rent them, that is all i am doing.

I thought they were just going to release an expansion disc that allows online play for Twisted Metal: Black.

The part about "You don\'t need to sign for AOL" should make those Xbox fans ashame of themselve for repeatedly saying...
"PS2 can have that crappy AOL, there server sucks anyway Ha ha ha".

So if i have a cable modem and netcape...I have to buy a broadband adaptor, the network adaptor, and the harddrive of course, and i will not tie up my phone line since it is a cable modem and i will not pay for it since it is apart of my service provider????? please help?
-
I probably going to buy the 40 gig harddrive. Why? Well, eliminate loading. FFX have scenes that load around 3 - 5 seconds long and other scenes that took ove 10 seconds long so I am going to buy it because it pain in the arse, extremely painful when I see the scene load....load...load...as if I am going to blow up or something. With the harddrive, not long it store files and other pc craps, but it will elimiate the load time reallly, really good. I have no clue how it was done but it done very well.:D

The downfall out of all of this is the how much do the gamers know? Casual gamers won\'t know about any adaptors, modems, and the like.. Right? As in the Dreamcast, everything was already there.. All you had to do was sign up with an ISP and get a game and voila, you get to play online.. My 2 cents....
-
hey serrano, im a hardcore gamer all the way, but if i by a broadband adaptor, and the hardrive, then will i be able to go though my service prodiver free of any addition cost, cuz i have a cable modem and all.
-
Wait we gotta buy a new thing?
-
I\'m throwin\' the same question that some others have thrown out there (but nobody seems to be selling the answers to it)...:
If I already have an ISP (forget cable for me...I live in the semi-boondocks) -- Earthlink -- So are folks saying that I\'ll not have to dump Earthlink nor add a 2nd ISP dedicated specifically for the PS2? But rather that I\'ll be able to utilize my current ISP, Earthlink, when Sony finally rolls out online-gaming support?
If the above is true, who can answer (or point a link that answers) just how a "current" ISP user such as myself would functionally game online with his/her PS2 "in the world of tomorrow"...
Thanks in advance...
-
Im not sure is this is true but this is my take on it. First you buy an adaptor and a sepreate modem since the PS2 was outfitted with one (damn dreamcast). Then of course the harddrive to. Then I think you can enter your own ISP and use your own internet service provider.
-
The sony made adapter is both Broadband and narrowband capable, with no adapter needed othrewise.
The 40 gig harddrive as of now seems mostly optional.

Personal pet-peeve. FF XII willlll not be playable online. But it will have online functions. (email, search, music, tips, guides)

Like the old plans for FF X?
-
I will use my PS2 for everything I currently use my computer for (e-mail, browsing), so that rocks.
The only thing I\'ll still use my computer for is Word (review writing).
Sounds good to me:)
-
i want to play FFXI and GT3 online :D
but i don\'t want to pay an other internet connection
-
Yes I support PS2 broadband/online plans..
I want to play TMB, FFX and SOCOM online :)
-
wont the lag for non bandwith players have horrible lag? computers with more ram still have lots of problems on 56k lines
-
Although online play isn\'t something I\'m eagerly awaiting, I\'ll be glad to support it when it arrives. Until then I\'ll be happy with offline gaming.

Yes, We have to wait. But then..............:)
-
Yes Stroke. Like the original FFX plans.
And the lag will not be more then the dreamcast games. You not sending everything, just small amounts of data.
-
I\'ve already started supporting the online play. I have Armored Core 2: Another Age. I plan to get the broadband adaptor since I use a cable modem already. I\'m looking forward to playing you guys online in some Navy Seals:SOCOM and other games.
Don\'t worry about me shooting your guys in the back from time to time. I\'ve just got a twitchy trigger finger. Honest! :)

Oh just bring it on lol .....i cant wait...this christmas/hannaka is going to rule!!

You mean the FF\'s will remain offline? There is a go..., no there still isn\'t a god but this rocks.
And to answer the question all you need is a hub. Buy a hub from anywhere and plug the modem into the hub, then plug the hub into your computer and PS2.

Thats a nice lineup I can\'t wait until the Final Fantasy\'s come out.

I most definitely plan on supporting online PS2! Especially if they let me keep my ISP!
I have a cable modem, and it is most refreshing to hear that they will let you stay with one ISP. Or at least, those are the plans for now, I hope!
-
I have a german mag (playTHEPLAYSTATION) in my hands with a pre-view of SOCOM. There are a lot of screens and they say that you can switch between 3rd and first person. It\'s not a full online game and has many good singleplayer levels. You can play online with 16 players and you can make a local network with 16 PS2!!!!! On the E3 there was a LAN with 6 PS2 (3 persons in a team). It was an USB network (not i.LINK). There was also the communication with headsets like MS Game Voice. This is good news and I hope that these incredible features will be in the end version.
Peace!

I\'ll support it.

1. You can definately use your current ISP; I\'ve read this in a ton of places. It\'s also how the Dreamcast works.
2. LoD: There\'s a slight mistake in your diagram. You are correct if you\'re talking about either a Cable Modem (which is a misnomer, it\'s actually closer in functionality to a bridge) or DSL, but not a plain old dialup modem. It will still work, if you have something like a Linux box or PC using WinProxy, which is then plugged into your hub. Obviously, this only works if the PS2\'s software supports a proxy, which I\'d be hard pressed to say "no".
3. Hell yes I\'m upgrading! :-)
