Title: Entertainment System
Post by: on June 25, 2001, 07:11:53 PM
From a couple threads I remeber peoiple stating that the PS2 is set up as an entertainment system.  Meant to sit next to the TV & sterio system as a DVD, CD, and game system in one.

Why didn\'t xbox and game cube do this?  Is there some sort of zany disadvantage to having the all-in-one appeal?

Well, I know that Game Cube definately won\'t!  The CD\'s are too small, DVD\'s and CD\'s won\'t fit!

As for xbox, I\'m not sure.

Less features keeps costs down.  Plus, Nintendo wants their Gamecube to be nothing more than a pure gaming machine.  Plain and simple.

Heh, don\'t be too quick.  I\'m sure Nintendo brings in some cash from the DVD playing Gamecube that Panasonic will be releasing.

At the heart of each system is gaming, though.  All that other crap is barely more than just another thing to write on the box.  (Unless you don\'t have a DVD player which makes that a damn cool feature.)

THe only problem with Sony that I have is that they should have re-leased a non-dvd ps2. I already have a $1000 DVD/LD player and one in my computer. If the PS2 was $100 cheaper because it didnt have the dvd feature, I could have bought 2 more games or something...the only downside is that im not sure if they could have games on dvd\'s which would lead to a much noisier ps2 world...

Sony went for the "entertainment HUB" concept but it ended up biting the publishers in the butt because people ended up buying lots of DVDs for their PS2 and very few games in the begining.  Because of that you see odd things like the remote on the Xbox so that publishers do not have to worry about a repeat of the PS2 launch.

Simple. Because these "features" are not needed and raise the cost of the system.

Nintendo has stated they are making something known as a "gaming console". It plays GAMES. Not DVD movies. If you want that, you can buy a DVD player (or another version of the GC released by Panasonic, I believe). Either way, this allows them to charge less and focus on one thing..GAMES.

The Xbox will allow you to play DVDs, if you buy the special remote (or something like that). But, MS decided not to focus on the DVD playback, because once again, its a game console. You buy it to play games. Not movies!

Sony is trying to make the PS2 a general entertainment unit. Music, movies and games. Problem is, DVD playback isn\'t the greatest and in Japan people was buyin the PS2 just to pay DVDs (a ps2 was cheaper then a DVD player).

I personally wish DVD playback was never brought into the PS2, but that is just me. Then again- I am bitter that it doesn\'t play my HellRaiser 2: Hellbound..

I think that\'s what gives the visual FX.  It saddens me that PS2 doesn\'t do that!!!
