Title: I got my PS2 replaced *cough*for free*cough*
Post by: IronFist on June 26, 2001, 07:32:22 PM
After months of suffering through my messed up PS2, completely screwed up DVD watching and taking a while to read any game, it finally stopped working today.  The only game that would work out of the nine games I have is DOA2:HC.

Fortunately, my sister-in-law was over at my house.  She, and her husband (my brother) were not going to take this.  My brother and I wanted to play TTT! :)  So my sister-in-law called Walmart, and said her (*cough*make believe*cough*) son got a PS2 for his birthday last week from his grandma.  She said it wasn\'t reading the games and she didn\'t have a receipt because it was a present.  The worker there said to bring it in with everything that came with it and they would replace it.  Fortunately, I still had my PS2 box and everything that came with it. :) So my sister-in-law took it in and they replaced it!  Ha ha ha.  Take that Sony!  That\'s 130 bucks they\'re not getting from me.

Here is another method of getting it replaced for free that I heard from other people on the internet.  This might work, but I didn\'t try it.  What you do is go buy a PS2 from walmart, then put your crappy PS2 in the box, take it back, and say it doesn\'t work.  Tell them you want your money back instead of getting it replaced.  The problem with this is that some stores won\'t just give your money back, they might just give you "in store credit" to spend at a later time at their store.  Call up the store before trying this to find out what their return policy is.  Another thing to remember is do not go to electronics stores! (i.e. Babbages, Best Buy, Electronic Boutique).  They check the serial code on the box and on the PS2, and if it doesn\'t match, you\'re busted.  If you have your old box, you don\'t have to worry about that because the serial codes will match.

It might not be honest, but either is Sony for doing this to us hardcore fans.  If you will excuse me, I have some DVDs to watch. :)

BTW, Sony will catch on soon.  If you want to get your PS2 fixed for free, do it now or never.

I\'m glad to see you finally get a working PS2.  If Sony is going to stick us w/a short warranty they better get ready for a WalMart-return-raping.

you could also do what I did with my original PSX, the ones with the bad lasers.  I bought a new one then opened them both up, switched the lasers, closed them back up.  Serial numbers are fine, and they never open it to check if the lasers have been swapped.  This gets you around the whole serial number issue.  The reason I did it this way was because the original PSX could play imports by just using the swap trick as opposed to any kind of Mod where as the new ones could not play imports.

OK, say me PS2 screws up and I have to return it.  I have my original box and PS2.  Say I do the swap trick from Wal-mart.  Would I just completely switch both boxes (return the original)?  All I\'m asking is if they can check the serial numbers by printung it on the recipt or something?

Yes, just return the PS2 in the original box with the instructions, one controller, and the cords.  If you do it at Walmart, they should not check the serial numbers because people at Walmart don\'t know a thing about electronics. :)  By the way, I would put it in the box it came with just in case.

But how do electronic stores check the serial numbers?  Is it printed on the box, receipt, and the system itself.

Remember, you don\'t return it with a receipt.  That will completely mess up your story. :)

But wait, you buy one, it breaks. -300$. You buy another on another -300$. 300+300=600-0=negative 600$. Return one. +300. 300 + negative 600= negative 300$. You dont get anything from that now, do you?

Yes you do.  You get your broken PS2 replaced for free instead of paying $130 to get it fixed.

and you guys wonder how Sony can sell so many systems (o rather SHIP, they NEVER say sell). They screw you up the ass in terms of quality so you have to either get it fixed or buy a new one every year.

:)  (had 3 PSXs, so dont push me around, I KNOW what I am talking about.luckily my PS2 hasnt had any major problems...yet.)

The number of broken PS2s is in the minority (1 to 5 percent maybe?), so I don\'t think that is the reason they dominate in console sales.  I had a launch PSX, and only had it fixed once in the 6 years I had it.  It had that sound problem that a lot of the launch PSXs had.

Do you guys think Sony planned on the US launch PS2s messing up like this?  I don\'t know if you guys in other places besides America are having the same problems, so I\'m not sure if this is true.  Sony only gave the US people a 3 month warranty.  Why did they do this?  They gave other places a whole year warranty.  I think they knew about the problem and just wanted to make back some lost money on the consoles.  It\'s a conspiracy I tell you! :)

The warranty probably has to do with different consumer protection laws. The US has laws that favor the companies more than the customer it seems.

Yeah, I believe that\'s the reason. Here there is a 1 year warranty on all items on sale, so the companies have to accept that. But if they only have to give a 3 month warranty in the US most of them wouldn\'t bother to give 1 year of course. :)

Hmmm, I had a broken PS2 also. It\'s great it broke, because if it never broke, I would have never came to these great forums looking for help! :) Good thing it broke during the warranty time, so it was replaced totally free of charge! :)

Ahhh...but I bought Sony 2 years ago...and its been my very best stock investment to date.  It alone has provided me roughly a 35% profit in my investments.  Stick with it...it will turn around.  Keep in mind that Sony is considered a "tech stock" in Japan & moves with the tech sector.  Also, consider buying more NOW while it IS at ~66.

Okay, I\'ll shaddup now cuz I realize this discussion is not very directly "gaming" related...  Sorry \'bout that!
Title: Simple Suggestion........
Post by: on July 05, 2001, 05:21:17 PM
Why not just buy a new PS2 from Wal-Mart and then switch the serial number stickers around.... It\'s better than getting caught and it\'s just one big sticker with all the PS2\'s info on it...... Then they can check the box, the reciept and all. It will still match.

Good idea.  That would get rid of all risks associated with swapping your PS2 for a new one.

And w1ngman, you should have sold it last fall when it was up to around 95, and then bought it again now that it\'s so low.  You would have been rich! :)

My PS2 broke down about two weeks ago, and I was going to fork up the $130 and send it to Sony, but then I remembered this thread, and yes, I took mine to the big W(walmart) and I got a new one!  for free, for free, for free for free for free.  Whoever started this thread, your a pure unadultrated Genius!

Unadultrated?  Looks like it\'s time for me to get the ol\' dictionary out. :)  I\'ve never heard that word used in this kind of sentence.

Edit: Unadultrated -- not mixed with inpurities.  Thanks for the compliment, but I\'m in no way 100% genious. :)

How many is this for you so far? 3,4? :)

I know many of us have had multiple PS2\'s on here. I, fortunately treat mine like gold, after having 3 PSXs, so far no problems with it.

i work for EB and when we sell any hardware, we scan the barcode on the box, then it asks for the serial number of the hardware i.e. PS2, XBOX, GC, GBA, N64, PSOne. and once we scan the serial it asks if they want a warranty. after all that is done, the receipt prints out. and on the receipt it shows the serial number

why go through all that trouble ? and what happens if you get caught or it doesnt work ?

why not just go to EB and buy a warranty for 1 year ? if anything happens, no matter what happens, bring it back to EB and they\'ll give you a new one on the spot

You won\'t get caught if you go to Walmart.  And the only reason I did it was because Sony ripped me off by giving me a faulty PS2.  I\'ve had my new PS2 for around 4-5 months now, and it is still working perfectly.

Speaking of Sony ripping people off, I had one of the launch PSXs too.  It had that sound skipping problem after a few years, and I had to send it in to get it fixed.  Just last month, I got a letter saying that to avoid a lawsuit, Sony promised to give either $30 or a free game to all those who had their PSX\'s sound problem fixed.  It wasn\'t as much as I paid to get it fixed, but it\'s better than nothing.  I think the same thing will happen with all of the faulty launch PS2s.
