Title: If the Japanese game market is so Low why is such a big deal to win them over?
Post by: QuDDus on July 01, 2001, 07:09:01 AM
This represents Japan sells from Jan 1-June 24 http://www.coremagazine.com/news/4482.php3
Only 1million ps2 units sold in japan so far this year.

It seems sales have been falling in japan since 1998.
http://www.xbox365.com/ktalk/989192101,36380,.shtml

http://www.businessweek.com/magazine/content/01_13/b3725166.htm
And from 1997-2000 japan console sales have stayed at a flat rate and the software sales took a 20% cut in sales. And seeing how it cost 5-10million to write a game for ps2 when it use to be 800K to 1.7million for psx.

I just don\'t see why japan is so important when they are not even the top market. They don\'t sell as much as U.S but all the focus in on them. And the sales of japan games have been falling. I mean sega had great sales out side of japan. but they focused so much on getting over in japan that they lost more and more money and went belly up.  I know that japan has some great developers but I mean there is tons and tons of money to be made outside of japan I mean you never knowwhat is going to take off in japan. I mean kirby 64 sold huge japan. And ridge Racer V outsold TTT in japan.

I\'m goin\' out on a limb here, but it could be because most the top developers are located in Japan . I\'m also sure that sells will pick back up. As of right now, there isn\'t alot goin\' on anywhere. The N64 is almost dead, the DC is pretty much dead (rest in peace). The only system out there is the PS2 and it hasn\'t had alot of huge Japanese releases (i.e, Final Fantasy). Once all the systems are out and titles start flowing like a river, I think you will see sells pick up again.

To be honest, we use to look at Japan as the place of up and coming games. The place that got lucky and got all the cool games. But as of lately, it doesn\'t seem that way and if you look back at system launches in Japan, you will notice how they sell well, but the actual games are really quite terrible.

Because the Japanese know their stuff around electronics/games etc. Even if they have weird taste sometimes. :)

US may have greater sales than Japan, but that may be b/c we have more people over here.  If you checked %, Japan would be far ahead of us.  They eat video games and electronics up over there.  They love stuff like that.  Especially stuff like the GBA that is small and powerful.

And yes, lots of the developers are over there.  So are product manufacturers: Sony, Panasonic, Toshiba, Samsung.

They do know there electronics, but when it comes to software they have funny taste. That is why developers are losing more money over there. I mean that dance music game sold 1million copies in japan that is crazy.

XBOX, are you talking about Dance Dance Revolution?  That games apparently great according to IGN, and I bet that the other sites have given it great reviews.  I haven\'t gotten a chance to play it, but I"m sure I\'ll enjoy it.

That is because most of us Americans (including me) are just too damn lazy to actually jump around and dance. We figure video games are a \'couch sport\'...

By the way -- Weltall lies. He doesn\'t like "poontang". Not unless Sam really is a female......

Couldn\'t be bothered reading the post, sorry if i\'ve repeated some points already mentioned.

My guess is its not the Jap games sales (although they are worthy of winning over reguardless, even if the market was falling), its the Jap developers who the console creators want to win over, they want the likes of Namco, Capcom and Konami developing for them.
