I mean if you add 39$ ethernet card. You might as well as say that is 200$ And seeing how the hdd will be upgraded every year kind of sinks it. I mean at $299 plus the hdd and modem card that is about 500$bucks. (And yes everyone saying they will lower the price because they lowered it in japan. Well It still cost $281.7 dollars in japan and it retails for $299 us. I just don\'t see them going even lower and they flat out said they won\'t. And even if they did drop the price which they said they won\'t you still would end up paying more for everything you get with xbox if you bought the add-ons for ps2)

The Ethernet adaptor is bundeled with the Hdd in Japan.
So you get the Broadband adaptor, a 56k modem and a 40 GB Harddrive for $135-145.
But 145 dllrs. is still way too much for me.

Can you give a link to what your saying, because I read that sony would sell the ethernet card seperately for $39. And the article on gamespot does not say anything about what your saying. It say HDD and nothing about a bundle, but if it is true I would like to read the press release.

PS2 Hard Disk Drive gets a price and date
Posted on 07/03/2001 at 8:08 PM
Sony Computer Entertainment sets price and release date for their new add-on the hard disk drive.
According to Japanese newspaper Nihon Keizai Shinbun, SCE has confirmed that the hard disk drive add-on for the PlayStation 2 will be released in japan on July 19. This release is most likely due to the fact that the highly anticipated Final Fantasy X is coming out on July 19, and uses the hard disk drive. The price will be set to $153 for the external hard drive and $145 for the internal.
This price seems a bit high, but on SCEI\'s Japanese site it says that the Hard Disk Drive is bundled with the Network Adapter. The North American Hard Disk Drive Bundle will cost $145 as stated above. The bundle will include the PlayStation 2 Hard Disk Drive and Network Adapter.

In my opinion, there is no way Sony can succesfully market this item. The general rule is, if you don\'t include it in the box, people won\'t pay for it, unless they must (aka memory cards). Then, if you decide you will market an add-on, it better be under the $75 price tag and that is pushing it. So, yes, in my opinion, it is pretty much dead. I don\'t know if I\'ll buy one or not. It really serves me no purpose, as I don\'t have access to broadband, but at the same time, I collect these things.
-
Thanks:) Still too much I guess they decided that if they are going to sell these items they can\'t sell the seperately at prices of 39$ethernet and 145$HDD.
In any case they are loosing a lot of money droping all these prices, but that is business. I still say the hdd is dead.

sheesh, dont u guys have anything better to do?

When you think about it, $135 isn\'t very expensive in gaming wise.
XBOX, your making it sound like a ****ty deal, adding up the money like that. I\'ll play that game, too.
You buy a PS2-------------------------> $300
You buy 3 games----------------------> $150 (you can get a HDD for less
You buy an extra controller---------> $30
That adds up to $480, which will most likely be same price if you substitute that for XBOX stuff.
And the whole package will include ethernet adapter.

3 games at 150 as supose to an HDD at 145$U.S wOW A 5dollar save. Add-ons never do well and priced this high won\'t.
So what if your thinking of getting a new console and you see all the features you can get in one console you have to buy for another at a higher price.

I agree. :D

I think that if the Hard Drive is going to do well, they shoudl package in a game that actually uses the hard drive to get people intrested, so in a way, it would be $50 game the $100 harddrive, pretty sneaky eh? make it look better to the public. I\'ll still buy one though, i like having everything complete :)

Problem with logic:
You buy a PS2 = $300.
You buy three games = $150
You buy a memory card = $30.
You buy a HD = $140.
Total price = $ 620.
You buy an Xbox = 300.
You buy three games = $150.
You buy a memory card = $30.
Total price.
$480.
---------------------------------------------------------------
The XBOX is still cheaper, due to the HD not being an add-on. Plus, you are paying for an add-on that is not gurantee\'d to be succesful. You could very well end up being like the 32X, Sega CD, 64DD owners.
Its just risky. I wonder how many people will take that risk and spend the extra cash.

Hey, I was right!
from a post I made a couple months ago;
"Even if that is a Linux programming package, you can still get a good idea of how much it is going to cost for the online package. If they charge that much for this package I\'d guess the online package would be ~$150 or more which is still too much. Like I already said, since they will be selling a separate ethernet adapter I will just get that and hopefully it won\'t be super expensive like the DC ethernet adapter."

I\'m so proud!:)

I\'m so sad. :(

Even if the add on sells for less than $50, ppl would not buy it. Regardless, the idea is a failure even before its conception.
I would really like to hear ddaryl\'s thoughts on this. Is he too much of a biased fanboy to admit any fault in Sony?
Anyway,
here is what I think Sony should do. Drop the whole hard drive idea, and just focus on the great softwares coming out for the system. Do they really need to pursue online gaming? I think it is still early and not as big of a market as predicted. They should let Microsoft have the market this generation and then try to take it with the PS3. Look at the Gamecube. Nintendo doesn\'t seem to give a chit about online gaming, and it looks like they be incredibly successful regardless. The hard drive is suicide, and they know it.

Dude. I wouldn\'t go there. Ddaryl was in fact getting a bit of flames a long time ago because he was positive about getting an Xbox.

Like Sam has said, Ddaryl has taken flames from regular members before, because he is postive about the Xbox. Ddaryl is a multi-console player.
Even then, there is no reason to make personal attacks towards people.
-
You guys need to stop making stuff up. The hard drive is a SEPARATE package than the ethernet adapter. They said so at e3 and they gave a price on it a e3 of 39.99 and said they would reveal the price od the hard drive at a later time, which they JUST did.
A price of 150 dollars gives you a hard drive...AND A HARD DRIVE ONLY. This crap about a the ethernet being packaged in is BS and the person who posted it knows it.
Bottom Line: the total price of a ethernet card AND hard drive is: 150.00 + 40.00 =190.00
and people want to know where rumors come from...

Now I think he\'s taking the wait-and-see approach. I think that is the smartest thing to do right now, because the Xbox could be a great console, but it could also suck.
-
Its Sony\'s own fault for making the damn thing 40 gigs. Honestly who needs 40 gigs in a videogame console? Computers have that much space, not game consoles.

What\'s suicidal about it? These hard drives are undoubtedly composed of off-the-shelf components, so they don\'t represent a huge development investment for Sony. They can offer the hard drive, do a minimal marketing campaign, and if it sells, then fine. If not, so what? They haven\'t lost a great deal. Later, if online gaming takes off with the XBox, then Sony is covered. They can increase production of the hard drive (and the modem/ethernet adapter if it\'s not included), and release a couple titles that will compete with whatever Microsoft\'s online fad is.
I think the release of this hard drive / online adapter is just a defensive action on Sony\'s part.

there is a first time for everything, so dont count it out yet!

New PS2 HDD & Net Adapter Info
Reported By Chris Patterson | 10:39 PM EST | Source: PSX2.com
Sony Computer Entertainment has just released their official statement concerning the release of the Hard Disk Drive and Network Adapter as well as the price for the accessories. SCE has confirmed that the HDD and Network Adapter will be released in Japan on July 19th in order to coincide with the release of Final Fantasy X, which requires the HDD to play. The official price, converted from the Japanese Yen to the U.S. dollar, will be $153 for the external unit and $145 for the internal unit.
While it definately sounds high for a HDD, SCE has stated on their website that the HDD unit comes bundled with the Network Adapter, which was originally priced at $40. The U.S. bundle, still without a release date, will retail for $145 and will include the 40 GB Hard Disk Drive and the narrowband/broadband Network Adapter for $145.

Sorry mate. Your wrong about that. People can change their plans. E3 was a few months ago. Things change.
But what I wont to know is what is meant by FFX requires the HDD to play? Is that just a mistake? Cause if thats true FFX is going to flop :(
-
You know...Ive read that link, and its not that credible now. First of all....things said on IGN\'s sites are not official Sony releases. They\'ve been known to mess things up. The article says that if you go to the SCE site it says on there web page that the deal includes a network adapter and hard drive (together).
Check this out though...check out the SCE site for yourself and tell me what you find??? There is absolutely NO post saying any crap about this...there for....Ign has lied and thats probully why they did not hot link it....cause there is no such article to hot link to.
This might end up a packaged deal but as of now.....Its not. Sounds like two seperate buys to me.
-
It didnt come from ign.
But I agree with you that it might not be true. I wont totally believe it until it\'s on more sites.
-
Memory prices fall all the time. By the time PS2 starts making games that would be best played with HDD, it will not cost as much. I bet that when HDD become essential to gaming, 3rd parties might be able to make their own drives and sell them cheaper. Plus some games, like FF XI that must be played online and would have great benefits from HDD will not cost much, some mag estimated FF XI @ $10. SO that HDD won\'t be so much of a hassle to buy. I say that if PS2 does decrease the proce for games requiring HDD, then it shouldn\'t be a problem.
Remeber, this is all a learnig experiance for SONY, be patient til it all gets worked out. Let\'s just wait and see. . .
-
well I only hope they drop the price cause Im not paying that much, Im also taking the wait and see way

well all i can say it was expected they would lose too much money and all if they sold it for less maybe a 100 bucks but theres no way that will be the deal
anyway i wonder if sony gets this bad feed back that they might cut the HDD to 20gigs and therefore cut the price
i don\'t know it seems like they should know what the deal is if they ask there fans anything
-
I will buy everyone a hard drive since everyone is worried about the price. haha

Those are some pretty expensive prices, a quick check at pricewatch shows a Seagate 40gb 5400rpm HDD for $79, and it is retail with a 3 year warranty. Isn\'t the PS2 HDD a Seagate drive? Oh, and I doubt the PS2 HDD is a 7200rpm drive.

I just went to directhit.com, typed in 40 GB drive, and these are the prices I got at about 4 or 5 different sites.
