Title: Who uses a STEERING WHEEL for driving games. Questions inside.
Post by: Gman2 on July 10, 2001, 03:58:05 PM
I am thinking of buying the logitec force feedback steering wheel tomorrow for GT3 but i have some questions about it.
1. where do you put it when you are using it? Does it just sit on your lap? Or did you mount it to something (like wood) and then put it on your lap? or do you have it on a table? It seems like it would slip off of your lap.
Because I play all my games in my la-z-boy chair. I dont have a table in fromt of me and I am not making one to stick in my living room. So how do the people who have them do it?

2. How stable are the pedals. If i am slaming on the brake will the damn thing flip over or move?

Thats about it. Other than that they sound like they would be awsome, I just need to know how to "fasten" it down.

Well I bought the wheel

You need something to mount it to. Perferably a table  with flat edges and a comfortable height. Coffe tables might not be comfortable

I honestly built myself a table just for the game and the wheel. Its made of Oak and cost me over $100 to build and 2 weeks of spare time but when it comes to keyboards  and mice I\'m covered. The table I built fits very comfortably in front of my reclyner. Although I wish I would have made my table 3/4 of an inch shorter it still is very nice.

The pedals actually felt great, I didn\'t slam but I didn\'t have to yet because I haven\'t really played the game yet. I goofed with TMB and the wheel today, but I was surprised how little if any the pedals did move

First off...I hope you\'ll accept my answers as someone that has recently purchased the Logitech FF wheel myself.  As I posted previously, and for your consideration, I purchased mine from Best Buy b/c they were offering a deal in this week\'s circular: Purchase wheel for $99.99 and then use store MIR to receive a $30 Best Buy Gift Card in the mail.  Also, appreciate that I\'ve purchase one (granted only one) previous steering wheel (a non-FF model) a few years ago only to be disenchanted by its offerings for (at that time NSFII).

As for Logitech\'s outting?  SUPER!!!  I\'ve already been enjoying it with Nascar HEAT 2002 & its a blast!  Good to know it will in fact work with other games besides GT3 although, of course, I can\'t wait to get that game in my greedy little hands Wednesday!!! :D  Also, have not had the time to check, but I\'m curious to find out if TM:B supports the steering wheel!  How cool would that be!!!???!!!

Okay...to your questions:

1. where do you put it when you are using it? Does it just sit on your lap? Or did you mount it to something (like wood) and then put it on your lap? or do you have it on a table? It seems like it would slip off of your lap.

The best answer to this question resides within your own comfortable seating arrangement.  You\'d be absolutely correct in supposing that this wheel will not work just "in your lap".  Due to the motorized FF, you have to have leverage to "fight" the wheel when it "fights" you.  I\'d imagine you could design fairly cheaply but efficiently a 2x4 contraption that would have a base that could "slip" under the depths of your lazyboy but then angle up and over the chair to allow a "bar/plank" to attach/clamp the wheel when desiring to play.  I gathered ddaryl is making some such contraption and doing so in a manner as to make it "furniture for the wife to appreciate"....  So, PM ddaryl for further suggestions here.  As for myself, I use a nice "extra" coffee/end table whose top is made out of 1/2 inch tempered glass.  Pedals fit nicely underneath b/c the legs are thin chrome & there\'s no drawer or anything below the top.  I center/sit in my "executive" leather high-back computer/desk chair then pull the end table out & roll my chair up to face my 52" RCA projection TV and it\'s gaming heaven.

2. How stable are the pedals. If i am slaming on the brake will the damn thing flip over or move?

Quite stable, IMO.  No slip on carpet & I\'d suspect no slip on vinyl (but I\'ve not tried that).  Again, however, a lazyboy can be rather "deep-seated"...your feet gonna reach the floor okay?  (That question is coming from a guy that\'s only 5\'7" tall...& when I sit in my plush lazyboy, my feet barely hit the floor)

Hope this helps in your decision.  Logitech has made a nice product I believe.

EDITED after the fact...damn, look how ddaryl already beat me to the punch and offered his design/thoughts...  Whew!  An extra hundred beans just for the nuts & bolts & grain huh?!!!  Did you add that cup holder as well?? :D

Sooo you\'re saying that TM:B *does* support the FF wheel?!!!  Cool...I\'ve yet to try my copy of TM:B with the wheel cuz of construction projects around the house after work... BUT THAT\'S GONNA HAFTA BE PUT ON HOLD for a bit tomorrow night when I have GT3!!! :D

It works with TMB but not in the same scope as it does with GT3.

There is no real force feedback when turning and the controls are awkward for TMB.

It works  but TMB is a dual shock game IMO

Thanks for the input everyone.
If I build something for the wheel I think I will have to
make it "living room compatible" like w1ngman.
Maybe you guys can post a picture of your setups. That would help everyone big time!
