First, a word of warning:
Do not go into FF:SW, expecting it to be your conventional Hollywood Sci-fi shoot\'em up movie, it\'s most definately not. Forget your Independence Day and Aliens cliches and go in with an open mind.
I loved this movie. However, a lot of people in the theatre (including some of my friends) didn\'t - mainly because they were expecting a conventional Hollywood sci-fi action flick with clearly defined bad guys, guns, lots of shooting and a simple plot. Instead, they got a movie with a much more complicated story-line, and a story line that is just as much fantasy, as it is sci-fi.
Much of the story shares a lot with FFVII - it deals with Gaia, the life force of the earth, and the life force within all of us (similar to the lifestream in FFVII). Unfortunately, for those who\'ve never got into fantasy, or never played FFVII it may be a way of approaching a story that may be very awkward.
There isn\'t much to say about the animation that hasn\'t been said - it\'s jaw dropping. There are moments in the movie where you just forget you\'re watching CG - Doctor Cid\'s character (voiced by Donald Sutherland) in particular is astounding. One problem I initially had is with the voices - not the quality of the acting, but the fact that you associate a voice with a certain face. For example, Alec Baldwin does the voice for the lead character (who looks nothing like him) and while this wouldn\'t be a problem in CONVENTIONAL (drawn) animation, FF:SW is so REAL, it\'s a little unnerving at first - but you get used to it.
I don\'t want to give anything away about the story - it\'s brilliant IMO, there\'s action, romance, and I love the way parts of the story are revealed in dream sequences dispersed through the movie, that come together to make sense at the end - it\'s brilliant.
When the credits roll up after a movie I usually just stay in my seat while the crowd in the theatre disperses, and after the movie (and even during, because of some very asinine comments shoulted out) it was clear that many people didn\'t like it or were confused. The majority of the audience were the teeny-bopper crowd that packed The Fast and the Furious, and one guy said; "If I was one of the animators I would have punched out the script writer" - a feeling my friend echoed.
I couldn\'t disagree more - this movie actually tries to break the mould of sci-fi action movies and IMO it does it very well. The amazing animation and the brilliant voice acting are just icing on an already excellent cake.
I will definately be seeing this one again.

Wow, I\'m so glad to hear this. So you actually see that
there\'s alo ppl who are not up to these kinds of refined
plot stories with their dumb ass minds.
I also hate it when ppl expect/demand a computeranimation to BE like a cartoon with lotsa laughs
and simple plot. Shrek tries to break that mould in a humerous way, but imo you gotta have guts to release a cgi movie like FF.
You know Mononoke Hime, the Japanese anime ? Very
similair regarding intellectual plot/story that actually has
a good thought/message to the audience.
I hate it when they make movies trying to please everybody. I hate it when ppl say this kinda cgi movie is
" no fun ".... cause, it isn\'t meant to be. And then there\'s
always the conventional movie critics who don\'t like it just because they\'ve got a biased hatred against " flashy-no depth- CGI animation ".
So stuff like this is always prone to dumb ass opinions
from both sides.
To those ppl : Just keep watching Toy Story # ....... and to those others keep watching Citizen Kane for the millionth time.....

Ouch, the movie might bomb because people expect just another "Kill all aliens, ask questions later" movie.
Personally I like movies that make you think, I loved Unbreakable! :D

Glad to hear your thoughts. I\'m somewhat skeptical towards the movie, but reading your opinion gave me a little to look forward to. Unfortuantely I won\'t be able to watch it till Sunday since I work till Saturday. (and today is GT3 day) ..

I hope you didn\'t hurt your brain thinking about unbreakable.
It was a Professor X cliche\'.
The guys kryptonite was. . . W A T E R!
Water! The human body is like 80% water! WTF???
5th to worst. . . movie. . . ever. And it saddens me that there are 4 movies worse than Unbreakable.

BWAHAHAHAHAHA!!! Classic. Although I could name at least 10 movies off the top of my head that were worse than Unbreakable(Even though I kind of enjoyed it). Namely anything Tom Hanks did before Forrest Gump and 95% of the movies made in the 80s.

believe it or not when me and my friend went today he timed it, he started timing when the actuall movie bagan and ended at the credits, its 1 hour and 37 min
now my thoughts:
I loved the movie also but was a little dissapointed. the reason for my dissapointment i think is because of my expectations of the movie before i went into the theatre. i was expecting more of a fantasy based experience and not the technological and reality based experience i got... what i mean is i wanted the swords and magic spells and stuff like that u got with the final fantasy games, instead it was just guns... although there were some kickass guns...lol
all and all i still loved the movie , i think i would have loved it more it i hadnt had the built up expectations that come with the final fantsy name. IMO they could have called the movie anything, they just tagged the final fantasy name on it to bring more people to the movie.
still........ GO SEE THIS MOVIE!!!!!!!!!!!

Oh, forgot about Tom Hanks! And I\'m sure at least 27% of the 80\'s movies were good. Well, maybe I shouldn\'t say that. Okay, okay, 28%.

ps2gamer, did you not see the trailers before going to this movie? I haven\'t seen the film yet, but I already know (and have known for some time) that it\'s predominantly a science fiction film. I don\'t consider using the name "Final Fantasy" to be a trick. The trailers give a pretty clear image of the content of the movie, I think.

Bump.
Anyone else see it?
Adan, the movie is just under 2hrs long. Congrats on Real signing Zidane!

I saw it today too. First thing I want to say is that there were way too many computer/video game nerds in that theatre! Doesn\'t Square know that bringing that many nerds to one place at the same time isn\'t safe?! There was enough brain power in that room to destroy the world! :)
I don\'t think the commercials for the movie give it credit. They make it sound like it\'s yet another man vs alien movie, and while this is somewhat true, it is a lot deeper than that.
The graphics were great except for the occational floating-hair effect that the girl had. Sometimes when the girl was in a room without any wind, her hair was blowing, and floating unrealistically. I was amazed by everthing else though.
The bad guy was also very cool. He would have made a great bad guy in a FF game.

I\'m happy to hear it has a complex plot. I would\'ve been dissapointed with a standard affair plot.
Unfortunately I can see my wife and my step-son not liking it that much, but learning to like it when I force them to watch my PS2 DVD version over and over again with their eyes duct taped open.....
I think I need to take Prozak

I know how you feel (\'cept for the duct taped eyes thing... :D), that\'s kinda why I gave my word of warning at the start of the thread - I went to see it with a few friends and my sister. My sister loves fantasy novels, and FFVII and she loved it as much as I did, but my friends didn\'t like it much at all.
My gf will probably like it , but I told her straight up not to go see it with her friends as I\'m SURE they\'ll hate it.
I\'m probably going to see it again on Friday with gf (thus preventing her from seeing it with her friends). :)
Ironfist - you\'re right about the bad guy - he would make an EXCELLENT Final Fantasy videogame bad guy.
EDIT: Ooops, just took out a \'potential\' spoiler. Sorry.

well i gotta say i am one of those people that was disappointed about more than a few things
here is what i was mad about:
1.The characters couldn\'t shoe emotion to well - animation wise - i have no idea why they didn\'t but it seemed that all emotion was done with their eyes because their faces didn\'t show much anything just their voices - also the synching of the voices and the lips were a little akward
2.There was waaayyyy tooo much dialouge not a bad thing at times but a lot of the action sequences in the movie are shown over and over - i am talking about the same scene showed mutliple times - kinda annoying
3. There was no background to the characters at all and this made me mad because you couldn\'t really relate to the characters and therefor i had a hard time really getting into the movie - i wish they would have had some flashbacks or something to tell about the story behind the main people
4.The story while original i think should have touched a little more on the FF aspect as said - it touched on FF7 slighty - i think they should have gone a little more into some how
well thats my bad points and sadly one of my great points and almost only one is the graphics - they are quite stunning and very nice - i have a hard time beliveing that this alone will make sqaure a profit
