And I had to come on here and share. My gf and I just got back from seeing this incredible movie.. And I must say it was worth every dollar I spent.
I have never been completly awe struck from a movies graphics, but this movie is just incredible. Its the small details in everything.. The skin, muscles, smoke, particles, everything combines to make one of the most amazing graphical movies ever..
I don\'t want to write a review about this movie.. Because of (names edited) had a problem with a review earlier.. I only saw the movie once and for almost 2 hours so I could in no way have a good understanding of it(maybe if I saw if 5 times I could write a review) .. With that out of the way, let me give you my impressions[/b] of the movie...
The story line was good, I could see how some people could find it confusing, the plot was pretty standard, character development enough for a movie of this length, and the visual affects were absolutely amazing...
This movie is definetly going to be setting some new standards for movie of this nature. Ground breaking work was done by Square Studios.. I am really hope it is succesfull for them.. So they can produce some more awesome movies like this...
GO SEE THIS MOVIE... It is definetly worth it
---
sorry for the little rant there, still got a bad taste in my mouth from a previous thread... :D
-
Yeah I can\'t wait to see it myself. I\'m going this weekend
I like movies that you have to see 5 times before you\'ve grasped everything. The Matrix was like that for me. SUre I understood the basics but getting all the little details out of a movie or wanting too is one of the things that make a a movie great IMO.
Everyone I\'ve talked to says the graphics / special effects make it worth the price
-
How was the surround effect ? was it dts or dolby digital ? I am most interested in sound these days and am curious if this will make a worthy dvd purchase that can be watched again and again just to be amazed by the sound field made possible by 5 channel discrete audio
-
Wow!! I must see this movie!! When I seen the commercial, I couldn\'t believe how incredible the graphics was. :D
-
I\'m definetely going to see it as soon as it hits the theaters here in Finland. The reviews it has already got all say the plot is weak, and dull, but every review has also praised the wonderful CGI-effects.
Mind me, I don\'t trust critics - and somewhat I trust Kirath\'s opinion much more than any of those movie-critic-for-a-job guys, and I believe I will enjoy the movie. So much that I\'ll probably see it more than just one time...
-
Yeah screw movie critics, how many do you think actually like or play video games.
-
But what has video-playing got to do with movie-critisism?
lol :)
If you mean Final fantasy, then don\'t worry - the movie doesn\'t have any links to the games, but the name.
The name is there just to bring fortune and glory.

Thanks Darth Joyda.. I agree with you.. Critics suck... Like I said before, I could see how people could find the plot confusing and dull.. But for a lot of us the plot rocked. I will say this, remember Final Fantasy 9 and the soul / lifeforce part of things.. Yeah the plot was cool, but could be seen dull by people who don\'t understand...
And my comments about a review come from me being harrased in another post for writing a review on something.. I just wanted to make sure the mods knew it was not a review so they did not get their panties all bunched up...

I only have one complaint, WHERE WAS PRELUDE AND PROLOUGE!?!?!?

jeep: Whenever I see a movie, sound is a big thing I look out for and Square has produced it nicely. The sound fx really give you a feel of the expanse of certain settings, and the serenity of others. Nothing really is overdone.
The dubbed over voices were very smooth and warm. But it is commonly known that voices that are recorded in a professional studio & then dubbed over rather than recorded on location simply don\'t seem believable. You might notice when they were in the lab and then walked outside to the city streets, voices sounded exactly the same with identical tonal characteristics. Minor I know, but still bothered me. The most noticeable voice effects were done nicely though; echoes in big meeting halls, walkie talkie breakup...
The use of 5.1 channel discretion was excellent. Simply amazing since all of the sounds had to be artificially reproduced. The phantoms that flew past you seemed to still be alive behind your head. The final big explosion is where the sound techs really took advantage of those surround channels. Only 3-D simulators with proprietary sound systems seemed to be camparable to that scene. I wish more sound technicians would use the rears like that! I personally plan on picking up the DVD when it\'s available.
Oh and I saw the movie in DD, but it\'s also available in DTS & SDDS depending on the theater. And just fyi, the theater I usually go to is SDDS, but every time I see a movie in DD I am more impressed with Dolby\'s format, despite all the fancy specs that SDDS has.

Thanks THX,
I also wish the rears were made better use of on a more regular basis. I have very high hopes for the ff movie and its probably just because alot of disney animated films have very nice audio properties, and i also enjoyed titan ae tremendously. I will probably buy that or rent it again just to see how it stacks up to some of the other stuff i have been watching. (i watched titan ae soon after i got a dd 5.1 system so just about anything would have sounded awesome)
blah blah blah goes the jeep .... anyhow
i heard of sdds but dont know the whole low down on it. could you enlighten me please ?
Also thx , I was setting up my frequencies on my center and surrounds. when i set the cutoff for the surrounds and centers should i make it as close to possible as what the specs are for the speakers ? their range is 30hz-80khz so i am assuming i start the bass cutoff as close to that point as possible. im still a newbie at this home theatre thing.
thanks for any help you can provide

THX I think that was your first post in like 2 months.

I\'ve yet to see it...but its not b/c I don\'t want too...just being too responsible at the moment with projects around the house after work...
But, thought I\'d use this thread to ask a related question. With the likes of FF:TSWI (which again, to date I\'ve only seen awesome previews of) and then sooo recently viewed the absolutely breathtaking replays in GT3, I gotta ask...When do you think Hollywood will simply kill off highly paid actors for the talents of computer artists such as Squaresoft? I mean, face it, we can\'t be all that many years away from making movies that frankly look "real" (not mostly real...I mean flat out "Is it live or is it Memorex" REAL).
Just curious to know what others think on this point...

I think that we will always need the real thing. And most actors will probably become voice actores, and get paid just as much. Now stunt guys, that would be a harder job to get. They\'d only be using them for model shots. I think that it still costs too much and takes too much time. "Real" computer graphics are way too far away from television use.
-
I saw it the 11th(suprise?).
I thought the movie was great but it kinda let me down because it didn\'t have that Final Fantasy touch. But besides that it really is good.
The movie theater people stood up and clapped. :)

*spits out water* 80kHz!?!? What speakers do you have man (and are you sure that\'s their range)? 99% of modern speakers usually have a range of up to 22kHz, but I know there are some extended definition speakers that are built with high resolution audio in mind (DVD-A, SACD). I also know they ain\'t cheap!

oops, 80hz-30khz,
sorry about that,
its just a yamaha ns-p60 center and surround package

I believe not. At the time, creating computer generated actors to a believable realism costs a lot. Yes, Final Fantasy wasn\'t a cheap movie. And, if they do many movies like FF - if hollywood starts copying - it\'s going to lose it interest soon. The first \'WOW\'s are already experienced with FF, and I believe no movie can achieve such \'feeling-of-new\' in some time.
It is much easier to pay actors to do the role than spend years on creating one. It\'s eventually cheaper, and will look better. What I believe, is, that the career of stunts are over - not yet but very soon. Computer effects have gone to the point that human eye can\'t separate real from made if it is flashed on the screen quickly. I believe that stunt-tricks will be made with computers in the near future, as they don\'t play such a long part in movies that they would be recocnized as computer-effects.
And, I don\'t think computer-generated actors will never be able to show such emotions as dedicated and good real actors do. Never.

Well, I just saw the movie and I am very impressed. Not just the people, but the chairs, floor, walls, the mountains and the ice on the lake during the credit roll. Amazing. If anything I think the skin was sometimes too rubbery, and the lip movement was too conservative. But the amount of detail was so amazing.
What concerns me is the plot. I enjoyed the movie, and when people were put into danger I was gripped, waiting to see how they would get out of sticky situations, but overall the plot didn\'t grab the "non-intellectual" parts of my brain. And in with that in mind I can understand how those obnoxious teenagers three seats to my left just didn\'t understand, and left the movie half-way through (they also came into the movie 10 min. late, and missed a lot of necessary information). I\'m afraid that the polot goes above the average viewers head.
For the more intelectually-prime. The plot made a perfect full-circle, comparing the dream world to the real world. I can\'t say much more w/o spoiling the story. I understood the symbolism, thinking it quite obvious sometimes, but I\'m afraid the youg \'uns of the audiance still haven\'t developed much of their brains.
Oh, and the theater wasn\'t even quarte-full, and it was a small theater too. I hope it does better than it seems it is.
My fears are of the outcome of box office sales. If this movie doesn\'t do too well, we may not see another movie like this for a while.
The movie was very FFVIII, with a couple plot touches of FFVII and FFIX, but mostly "felt" like FFVIII.
I can\'t wait for the DVD.
Oh, and that Spiderman preview looked awesome.

Yup, like I said in my thread regarding the movie - I pretty much felt the same way when I watched it and I too was in a theater packed fully of teeny-boppers who you just tell, from their comments after the movie (and unfortunately from a few idiots who chose to shout out DURING it), that they were expecting something a bit more simple and along the lines of the standard hollywood aliens/shoot \'em up fare - and ended up very disapointed.

I know doesn\'t it? The web on the building was so freaking awesome! I was never a big fan of X-men or Spiderman none of the comic book stuff but this movie looks to be like X-Men, which kicked ass too.

I saw it tonight and I can\'t say I was overly impressed. While some characters looked beyond awesome (Dr.Sid is an example) others was completely lacking. The voice acting at times was medicore and what humor it had fell flat.
The scene elements was somewhat cliche\' and the story itself seemed to "dumbed down". It had potenial for a great story, and the overall scope was good. But, the story seemed as if it was hundred pages long and then was forced to be a five page read.
CGI rating : 8 out of 10.
While the backgrounds always looked awesome and so the did the lighting. Some characters just lacked in alot of areas. While watching it I couldn\'t help but stare at how great Dr.Sid looked and then look at another character like Jane and how bland she looked.
Story: 5 out of 10.
Complex story dumbed down beyond belief, in my opinion. Seemed very forced also. It goes beyond the average viewer who just wants eyecandy, but doesn\'t substain the viewer who wants more from it. It just falls inbewteen the two. Decent, but it seems very forced as I already said.
Overall : 7 out of 10.
Better then this year\'s Tomb Raider but still a big dissapointment. It is funny when a a movie that talks about Spirits, has the word "SPIRIT" in its title and it based off a series that is known for its "spirit" , actually lacks any spirit itself and that is the big factor with Final Fantasy : The Spirits Within. No part of it is compelling. You never care for any of the characters.
Decent flick, but nothing special. The cinema was very small and almost empty so I am assuming that the movie isn\'t attracting alot of viewers either.
:(
(Flame me - I know its gonna happen. ;) )

I saw it yesterday 6/14/01 and i thought it sucked a$$ no offense but it was waaay over hyped (by my friends who\'ve seen it coughVIVIcough the graphics on the other other hand were really nice the old guy looked real but as for the story line square soft could have done better....
:)

Well I finally got around to seeing it today and I absolutely loved it. Being the skeptic that I am, I expected the worst, but wound up surprised. ... Not in the mood for any in-depth comments, I\'ll just say that I hope it does better @ the box-office than I think it will.

as i have said before
i agree with you totally
for me the biggest thing was the story - the characters mainly - i wanted to know more about them - all i knew about them from the movie were little insights - but those were not enough for me to like or feel for the characters in anyway - and if you can not relate to any character in a movie then most likely you will nmot like it
thats what i thought it lacked
-
well, work on the sequal has already started...so as long as that makes a lot of money...and we get more (i thought it was supposed to be a trilogy) it\'ll all be sweet
i dont see how Tomb Raider, such a linear, boring action cash in on a videogame, can gross more than something that is artistic, hyped up to the max, and an even bigger videogame...then again, the movie hasnt been released in Japan yet has it? :)
-
Hopefully I have enough viewing time to write a review about it..
