Ok, first these pics
Nightcaster (XBOX)
(https://psx5central.com/community/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.computerandvideogames.com%2Fnews%2F07_01%2F3016%2F8.jpg&hash=22ab93c591a0091c180877942010073eaa451536)
FF X ( PS2)
(https://psx5central.com/community/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.computerandvideogames.com%2Fpreviews%2F427%2Fbig%2F8.jpg&hash=114f0fdc564a9d20bf6f71643872f491161cbfc4)
Both pics are done in realtime. But what I notice is that the Nightcaster pic does use some very nice Blinn shading. Now I know GT3 does have awesome carmodels with their realistic metallic look, but I haven\'t seen any PS2 game with Blinn shading for characters on
PS2. Is that so hard ? The 2nd pic of FF X is nice, but the
big \'monster\' has the same matte shading. Why don\'t use a nice Blinn ?

perhaps its just me, but it looks like the dude in the top pic posesses about 4 textures
-
Uhhhhhhhh...........FFX graphics kill nightcaster or whatever its call. Yes the top pic textures are lacking....
-
It could be the style in which the games were done. But that\'s besides the point. What exactly is blinn shading?
-
Yeah Troglodyte, it\'s also partly a matter of style.
And yes the Nightcaster character does not have
much textures ( besides the ones on his arms/hands),
but that wasn\'t my point. My question was why I haven\'t
seen many PS2 characters use the Blinn shading ;
the shading material that creates a very nice shiny surface.

It appears Metallic...
Does GT3 use that technique? I wouldn\'t suppose ther\'d be a big call for the metallic look in most games, especially not an Rpg, unless maybe for armor, or a metal boss.

What about Midnight Club, Oni and Top Gear ? There was pretty shiny thing in those (the girls outfit on the back, and the cars...),
Others-Also, despite what you think of the NC textures or style, that boss is friggin huge! More impressive than those tiny characters in the FFX pic. Its much easier to have better texures on small characters. Not that it matters, NC is much earlier than FFX.
-
Well maybe the blue guy with the lionhead from
the FF X pic should have a sweaty shiny skin.....

Oh yeah! Oni did a lot of blinn, Very well too, I might add. And FFX is going for a more soft feel than the previous games. No need for blinn.
-
Well, it could use some hot chicks
in tight n\' shiny spandex outfits ! LOL :thepimp:

blinn shading? Never heard of that..it looks like smooth shaded polys with gloss maps. IN gt3 the reflections are enviromentall mapped in real time. You can see all the shadows trees etc sliding perfectly realistic over the cars.
but blinn shading is not supported in xbox effects (hardware wise) but I think its done in software, if so ps2 can do it :)

Blinn is for cars..
If they put blinn on the characters in FFX, they would look fagish..
And why does the smoke in the top picture look to be 16-bit colours?
