I am writing this topioc because I am VERY disapointed in the quality of GBA software. There pratically is none.
Now, I support 2D gaming 100%. Most of my favorite games are in 2D. I thought GBA was going to be the ultimate 2D machine, but instead it\'s just another money making scheme for Nintendo.
GBA\'s games currently available...suck. Here\'s a small review of each GBA game that I played.
Rayman Advance...yawning advanced. The game is easily one of the best looking, but by god is it boring. The platforming sucks. It\'s no Mario, Sonic, or even Donkey Kong. It\'s too damn easy aswell. I expect a descent challenge from every game, but this one is for kids.
Mario Advance-why did Nintendo port Mario 2 instead of Mario 3 or Mario World? THEY\'RE ****ING STUPID, THAT\'S WHY. While the game is actually pretty good and is currently my favorite GBA game, it\'s not a keeper. It was a good rent though.
Konami Krazy Racers-if your going to clone Mario Kart, then do it right. \'Nuff said.
F-Zero- repiditive. I like the speed and graphics though. But the gameplay itself get\'s boring. A question rosed to my mind after playing it: why did Nintendo decide to port this over to GBA, instead of EarthBound, Mario 3, Mario World, Super Mario RPG, Zelda:LTTP, or Super Metroid? Again, BECAUSE THEY\'RE ****ING STUPID.
Tony Hawk 2- the supposed best GBA game. Well I hate to see what the worst is...this game blows. I like a challenge, but mastering the camera and controls is just too much. I was very disapointed in this game. The graphics actually look WORSE in motion...good animation though. Only bright-side of the game. And what\'s with the horrible soundtrack? The N64 version of Tony Hawk had few but great songs. GBA games can hold just as much as N64...then why the crappy soundtrack? Ugh. And also, I ain\'t paying 69 dollars for this game. Too ****ing expensive for a bad game...
I\'m renting CastleVania tomorrow, hopefully it won\'t totally scrap from the balls of sucktitude like the other games I played.
Now comes my complaint about the system itself(yes, more ranting with more bad grammar and poor vocabulart, I\'m not as smart when I\'m mad).
I don\'t have a problem with the size, it\'s the screen and buttons...
The screen scratches and gets dirty way too easily. I don\'t know if they can prevent that, but it still bothers me.
The buttons are my biggest concern. Why did Nintendo decide to use only 2 face buttons? Again, BECAUSE THEY\'RE ****ING STUPID. They had enough room(or could of made more room) for 4 face buttons...don\'t tell me otherwise. They could of kept the L&R buttons but it\'s difficult getting used to constantly using them in games like Tony Hawk 2. **** you Nintendo. I don\'t see how it\'s possible to play the upcoming Street Fighter with the controls...
Well that\'s the end of my rant. I think GBA blows, sucks, reeks, stinks, ect ect. I know it will get better, but dammit right now it\'s just a waste of my extremely limited money IMO. There\'s 100$ I could of been buying another GameCube game with. Wake me up when Metroid 4 is released. That\'ll probably be the first GBA game I get. I don\'t even like the look of it\'s future software. Doesn\'t look good for GBA...
So here\'s the question- satisfied with your GBA so far? Obviously I\'m not, but I\'m curious to see how many people feel the same way as me.
-
Wait for the Crash game, you know it\'s gonna rock... you know it. :D
-
The Crash series sucks. None of them can hold a handle next to Mario 64 or Banjo-Kazooie. It was just Sony\'s way of trying to cash in off a mascot, they\'ve succeeded, but us hardcore platformers can\'t be wowed.
Though the GBA version might be better since Naughty Dog isn\'t developing it...
-
Well what did you expect? A handheld PlayStation?

No, I expected a handheld SNES, and got a ****ty NES.
That\'s one thing I forgot to mention in my post, the graphics on it are very underwhelming. I thought it was just as or more powerful than a SNES? HA! Golden Sun looks very impressive, but that\'s the only game that I find impressive from a graphical standpoint.
One positive thing that I liked to say is the lighting is simply not an issue. Sit or lay down under a lamp, it\'s perfect. Anyone who thinks the lighting is an issue is a moron who has never holded the thing before.
-
Thankyou! Someone who agrees with me about GBA!! I was also very dissapointed.........
Mind you, I really want Wario Land4........but, then I heard those Nintendo bastards are changing the whole clever concept of it by allowing Wario to loose life and die like in any other boring platformer....oh,well........I still can\'t decide wether I should get a GameCube or X-Box.......
-
i havent played the system much, but my friends have been raving on that it is as powerful as the psx. i laughed and told him that it wasnt, but i know there is proof.
given, he is quite stupid, and thinks that tony hawk on GBA looks better than tony hawk on psx.
so its hard to argue with idiots.

Oh well I\'m honoured that you had such high standards of me. :)
But like I said, I\'m not as smart when I\'m angry, and being disapointed in a system which I spent over 100$ for makes me angry. If I wanted to write a post twice that size, using twice as good vocabulary and grammar, then I could of. But I\'m lazy. :p
Besides, a solid two page review always gets summed up in one small paragraph.

Jump,
It\'s cool that you didn\'t like it man, but it is best to post when you\'re not upset. :) I think Castlevania should change your mind (if you\'re a CV fan.)

All I have for it is FZero so far. I love that game. I only have 1 master series left. Now I must wait for GameBoy Wars Advanced and Mario Kart SC. Calm down a bit Jumpman, you seem to be yelling. Remember the system has only been out for a month, give the games some time!

yes, you are right, we should give the GBA more time like we game the ps2.
but remember he is just saying that he is dissapointed with the GBA....
-
Your out of your f***ing mind Jump.... every title you listed in your 1st post there is AAA. I could have more fun with any one of them than the entire launch lineup of the system this site caters too. The only thing I agree with is that Nintendo should\'ve done SMB3 instead of 2. Or better yet, 1-3 on one cart.
PS: Crash rocks...

What he said. :)
I really want a GBA, but I have no money. Oh well.. The little boy in me will have to wait. :D
-
I don\'t know what you\'re on Jumpy.
Rayman was an excellent Psone game and is an excellent GBA game.
Mario 2 is a great game. Sure, I prefer to see Mario 3 and Super Mario, but all good things to those who wait.
F-ZERO always rocked and always will. Sheesh. You say it is too repetive? Every racing game is , man.
Tony Hawk. Well, okay agree\'d. But then again, I hate the series anyways.
When you rent CastleVania I think you will be surprised. But then again, maybe not. I personally think it is one of the most excellent games in along time.
As for the comment about the GBA being a portable NES.. F-ZERO clearly shows it can emulate SNES graphics. Mario 2 looks nothing like its NES counterpart. Tony Hawk and Rayman could of never been on the NES. And when you see the huge sprawling worlds and great graphics of CastleVania, I don\'t know how you will be able to say it is a NES.
-
I\'ve only played Tony Hawk 2 and Castlevania, and the latter rocks (I own it). THPS2 was okay, but not that great. Graphicswise it was good.
The only downside about the GBA is how it scratches so easily (mine has a nice squiggly fine scratch on the screen, which you can see when playing Castlevania because of trying to get light).
For me, so far, it has lived up to expectations, and there IS a Metroid being made, as well as SMB3 and some other NIntendo classics. Also, Nintendo conducted a poll as to what SNES game fans most want on the GBA, and Mario RPG came out on top... now if Squaresoft were able to develop for it... hmmm... ;)
-
Whoa, who are you and where did you put Jumpman? :)
I don\'t know if you\'re right as I\'ve never played GBA, but people have different opinions about different games, so you could be right in your own way. I was just very surprised seeing this from you... saying Nintendo sucks? *still in shock* :D
Note to self: Expect to see a \'fooled you\' post later. ;)

Yes but all of the games are only descent so far and I expect better from Nintendo. I know it will get better eventually, but I don\'t see that happening anytime soon. The only games I\'m interested in that are coming out this year are Mario Kart and Sonic Advance, but neither of them have to stuff to compete with Eternal Darkness. That\'ll be the only game I purchase from now until the end of the year.

Good for you! But I\'ve played all of them and am very disapointed with each and every one of them. I guess my standards for GBA were too high. :(

Or better yet: 1-3+ Super Metroid+Zelda:LTTP. Surprisingly, they have enough room to do that on a GBA cart, but they didn\'t. :rpissed:

Rayman was boring and simply.
Mario 2 was good but lacked what made every Mario game great. I didn\'t mind that it was probably the most difficult game out of the series since I love good challenges, but...I can\'t explain, Mario 3 was just a lot better. \'Nuff said.
I don\'t like repiditive games, hence why I thought F-Zero was a bad game. And the thought of Nintendo porting over a better game was always in my head. Maybe that\'s because the gameplay was so poor...
I was just very surprised seeing this from you... saying Nintendo sucks? *still in shock*
Nintendo is easily my favorite developer, but they\'ve ****ed up the GBA launch with poor software IMO.
-
Thats what I was saying jumpman when I played it I thought the graphics were below snes quailty which is sad. Most of the games on the system are old snes ports, Nintendo proably did that to make a lot of money off people. For the 100th time gba is not 32-bit who cares if the specs say it. Heck, they couldn\'t even port a perfect street fighter 2 turbo.
-
Actually, LIC was right. I must of been on something because GBA definitely has the graphical capabilities of a SNES.

It does have the graphical capabilities of the SNES but for some reason Nintendo didn\'t really take advantage of that in the launch. F-ZERO was ported over, which is a love or hate game. I personally love it. Mario Advance (2) was just a ported version of Mario 2 that appeared in Mario AllStars (SNES). Basically, they ported over some quick SNES titles. Nintendo has promised more games like Super Mario World, etc to be ported over, so it isn\'t all that bad.
I do agree, that the best launch game would of been Mario AllStars ported over to the GBA. But, I doubt we see that anytime soon - if ever.

Mario 64 was better than Crash 1 & 2, but warped has even SM64 beat. Banjo is the worst of the bunch. BTW, I own all of them, every Crash, both Banjo\'s, SM64, so I\'m impartial.

No, that dosen\'t make you impartial. That just makes you more educated about the differences between the platformers than most people. You have the refrence material at hand...
SS_87... Don\'t judge the GBA by what people here say. Don\'t judge ANY system by what other people "Say". Go out and try it for yourself. Your tastes, preferences, and standards are different than anyone elses.. you might actually enjoy the GBA a lot and end up missing out on some great games. Play it at WalMart.. borrow a friends.. whatever. Just get some firsthand experience before writing a system off.

F-Zero was a totally new game. Not one track was the same from the original, the handling was totally different (With having to tap the A button in turns) and the music was different. Sure it looks like the other one for the most part, but it\'s not a port by any means, just an average sequel with zero innovation. I wqas quite dissapointed with it.

ddaryl, why do you even bother responding? Since you don\'t own a N64 then your opinion is completely worhtless.

Your entitled to your opinion, but most webtsites and magazines agree that Mario 64 and Banjo-Kazooie are the best 3D platform games of all time. Just look at the reviews, they speak for themselves.
Right now, I would like to inform you that GBA doesn\'t suck like I previously said it did. I been playing CastleVania:Circle Of The Moon yesterday and it\'s the last game I\'ve truely enjoyed since Zelda:MM.
WHY DIDN\'T YOU PEOPLE TELL ME IT PLAYED LIKE METROID???
God it totally kicks ass. The graphics are awesome. The bosses are amazingly fun, probably the best boss battles since Super Metroid, and it\'s simply a great game, better than all my DC games. I\'m goign to buy it tomorrow. This game has radically changed my opinion on GBA, it\'s a great system. :)

I\'m not getting GBA untill a Zelda comes out for it.

1.Go here and look at the reviews then.

Banjo reins supreme.
Check out the IGN reviews. Banjo-Kazooie is regarded as the Mario killer while Crash is average is his first two attempts then makes a good comeback with three.(Crash 1 and 2 scored low, Crash 3 got 9, but Banjo got 9.6 from IGN64, a site where they aren\'t affraid to give bad reviews).
I\'ve played all of them, and personally I think Mario 64 is nose hairs better than B-K. But I guess everyone has an opinion of their own...
2. The huge worlds, the upgrading of your weapons, the similar fighting, the very similar boss battles which require simple dogde and attack skills in both games, and the atmosphere...IT\'S SUPER METROID WITH A WIP! But copying Metroid was not a bad decision IMO.
-
1.You and them are both nuts. Banjo was pretty average.
2.If those extremely general similarities make it a \'copy\', then Banjo\'s a total rip off...

I haven\'t got to play it yet. I was just pointing out that the GBA could do SNES graphics. Thanks for pointing that out though, man. I just know I love the original F-ZERO . I was under the impression that the "port" was like the original F-ZERO .

Hey jumpman what would you have gave gt 3 compared to ignps2 score?
I don\'t get why people regard scores as the best judge of a games greatness. I think Chrono Trigger is the best game I have ever played, but I would NEVER give it a 10.0, EVER. There is obvious flaws in just about every game I have ever played and that\'s the way things are, which is also why scores are an irrelevant basis to judge games on. Play it yourselves and read the actual REVIEW before forming your own opinion. The score is nothing but a means for idiots to compare games on. 2 reviewers give 2 different games 2 different scores for 2 totally different opinion, yet they are judged accordingly and compared. Idiocy I tell you, IDIOCY!

Ryu and jumpman you guys have some good points. It would take a lot for me to give a game a perfect 10. Me personally I would give gt3 around 9.8 or 9.9 cause compare to the other ps2 racers it kills them and has so much depth to it. Graphically nothing on the ps2 is the same level as gt3. Thats why we have reviewers they have different opinions on games.:thepimp: :thepimp:

You guys are too easily pleased.
Never in the history of videogaming have I ever seen more rehashes and port overs than what is on the GBA. Where are the original games? Why are you guys content with playing the same crap we have been playing for the last 6-10 years? Every single one those games you can either get through emulation or dig them up in your closet. Sure, its portable, but that is a novelty and should not be the determinance of the system\'s superiority. Games are what matters and quite frankly the GBA undelivers. Big time!
-
I\'ve heard rumors of a Super Smash Brothers for GBA (sweet). That game is also one to get.

Why do people constantly judge systems by their launch software? I know if I bought Pilot Wings 64 and an N64, I would proclaim it has the biggest hunk of crap ever, but hey look, they got Zelda OoT and that was the best N64 game to date. However, it didn\'t come out till many years after its launch. Video gaming is a long term investment. If you buy a system counting on it to be worth your money every week of every month with a new game that meets your expectations, then you are gravely mistaken with every console purchase you make. You buy, you wait, you play, you have fun, that\'s what gaming is all about.

CastleVania is a rehash? NO! It was one the single most fun games to come around in along time and in my opinion is worth the purchase of a GBA itself. Mario Advance (Mario 2) is one of the greatest platform games ever. Its great being able to take it on the road, when I want. Yeah, sure, I could get it via emulation, but I really don\'t want to sit and play them at my computer. And my NES is barely functional and my copy of Mario AllStars was stolen by family.
Easily pleased? Maybe so. As long as the game is solid, I don\'t care if it just a rehash. Because, the fact is, all games are really rehashes. If you want to look at it like that, then the Xbox is goin\' to have problems at launch. DOA3? Sheesh. Another fightin\' game..Damn rehashes. Halo? Ew. First person shooter - we\'ve seen plenty of those. The list goes on and on.
Ryu made a great point, when you buy a system it is a long term commitment. People who bought the GBA pretty much knew what they was gettin\'. Classic Nintendo titles ready to go on the run. Some games are timeless. Mario 3 is timeless and I can gurantee you I will buy it when its released. Street Fighter 2 is timeless and when it comes out for the GBA, I\'ll buy it also.
Easily pleased? Maybe. Or then again, maybe I just love solid games that constantly entertain you no matter how many times you play them - something 90% of games are lacking today. I\'m content playing games we\'ve been playing for the past decade because they still deliver more fun then games now\'a\'days. You know, "fun", right? "Fun" is when you don\'t have to read a 100 page instructional manual, sit thru 10 mintue long cinemas, remember complex motions and then worry about things like if your memory card is full or not.

Long term investment? I agree, but nobody goes to the store, sees a game system, and says to themself "oh I am going to buy this because it will last for 6 years". Ppl buy it for the games, and the GBA is currently the biggest piece of junk doo doo on the market. Halo, and DOA3 are brand new softwares. Games like Mario 2, F zero, and a bunch of other stuff on the GBA are rehash crap and port overs with very little innovation. There is a difference. I don\'t care if you happen to be able to finally bring Mario 2 on the road. Bottomline, these are games we have all played before. The novelty of it being portable will wear thin and what you will have left is another crap rehash that will get boring fast. It\'s an issue of "been there done that". Where are the original, new experiences? Where are the real sequels and truly innovational, daring softwares? Why are we only being shafted with a bunch of ports and rehashes? Until the GBA starts fulfilling my answers, I won\'t give it a second thought.
-
Um, dude, I don\'t think I\'d use DOA3 as an example of new and original software...

DOA3 and Halo are original titles? You have a fighting game sequel. You have a FPS shooter. And while your complainin\' about ports, I guess you won\' even give two thoughts to Onimusha:Gemna? Its a damn port!
And if gaming isn\'t a long term commitment , why do you people get excited about Project Ego? Thats a long time to wait.
And I\'m sorry, none of the games now\'a\'days offer "new experiences". All it is a rehash of another game. Sure, sometimes they make it alittle better, but it isn\'t nothing "new". Very seldom do we actually see something "new".
Gaming was best when it was simple. When anyone could pick up a game and enjoy it. And yet, even though it was simple, you could still become a master at the game of your choice. When gaming was simple, Nintendo made some great classic games and now they are giving people the option to play them on the game. It will have its fair share of original titles but it will also have great classics .
I\'m sorry, if you can\'t enjoy timeless classics. But, while you\'re reading the 100 page instruction manual that will come with Project Ego or whatever Xbox game, I\'ll be finally enjoyin\' my dream... Bein\' able to play Mario 2 while on the toilet...
Ah, life is good.
;)
-
Um, first of all, cut down on the generlization and stop putting words in my mouth. I never said DOA3 and Halo were original. I said they were brand new.
Thanx for bringing up Onimusha because that is a brand new game also. Even though it is a port, a lot of ppl still haven\'t played it and it is less than a year old. What do you see on the GBA? Crap and rehashes that are 6 - 10 years old. Everyone and their mommas have played it on emulation, multiple systems or whatever.
I don\'t know about you, but I think it is stupid to buy a system and wait two years down the line to play the game you want. I buy a system to play the games now, and currently there is nothing on the GBA that has entice me otherwise. I am currently judging the system by its launch titles because quite frankly that is all there is to go by for now. Down the line if things get better then I will pick up one. Simple as that.

Ah! I never saw Ethugg\'s post.

1. It couldn\'t of been average if they both think it\'s on par with/better than Mario 64. I\'m really starting to doubt if you ever played the game...
2. I should of said it PLAYS like Metroid with a wip then. They took some key elements from Metroid, that\'s obvious, but the differentials to seperate the games. It\'s not a completely copy though.
Now I know you haven\'t played Banjo-Kazooie. If Banjo is a rip-off of Mario, then CastleVania is a rip-off from Metroid.
There are some major differences which allows it to be considered not a rip-off(sue me for the bad wording). You learn new skills to get past areas, the levels are designed completely different, you can transform into creatures, cheat menu, ect ect.
It may be a copy, but a rip-off it\'s not. It\'s not a bad copy either. It takes every Mario64 element and improves on it while adding a lot of new stuff.
WOW! BAD LOGIC ALERT!!!!!

Onimusha is a port.
Mario Advance is a port.
Tony Hawk 2 is a port.
Rayman Advance is a port.
F-Zero is a port.
The GBA line-up has pleased most gamers, including me.
\'Nuff said.

What the heck??!! You\'re the first person I\'ve seen that actually says that THPS2 sucks. This is one of the greatest games ever! Have you been on a car or plane trip lately? THPS2 is the best thing you can have with you! It almost never gets boring. Castlevania is also a great game, but some people might find it boring because of the "huge one map" way of getting around. If you get lost you might end up 15 minutes away from where you actually need to go. BTW I still haven\'t beaten Dracula, he\'s annoying as heck.

The DC and probably the PSX version of Tony Hawk 2 were great, but the GBA version is horrible.
It\'s so hard to see what way your skater if facing when your trying to do tricks. Getting used to the L&R buttons for doing most of your tricks is confusing, and it\'s hard getting used to the over head camera angle.
CastleVania has THPS2 owned, along with every other game released this year so far IMO.
