Title: Another One Bites the Dust
Post by: Eiksirf on July 20, 2001, 03:29:42 PM
Well, say good-bye to Ravenblade.

And to 26 more Retro Studios employees...

On the bright side, Nintendo seems determined to get a good game out of Metroid.  It knows how highly Metroid is regarded, and like its other franchises, it wants to see it through to its fullest potential...

Either that or Retro Studios is just one project away from being history.

Retro\'s looking really bad. Nintendo should give em all the boot, and take over the project to make sure it rocks...

Sure.  Retro Studios is a relatively new company made up of third-party defectors from other companies.  Nintendo thought, "ooh, that sounds special" and hired them as a second-party.

So then Nintendo hands them the Metroid franchise in addition to an RPG, a car-combat game, and I think a sports title.

One by one, the porjects disappeared until at E3 when only Metroid and Ravenblade remained.

Unfortunately, progress was extremely slow, and even then, the established build of Metroid was deemed "crappy."  Follow that to this morning when it was announced that Ravenblade was also cancelled, along with contracts of 26 employees, to focus on Metroid.

Metroid, a game which may be doomed from the ground up just for being redesigned as a FPS.

Wow.  They\'re a bunch of losers!  \'Tis a shame when programmers slack off and dissapoint countless numbers of fans.

I wouldn\'t say they are losers. They was handed a project that is loved by public. Then, Nintendo told them to make it FPS, which the public so far has hated. They wasn\'t ready for such a big project. Common sense should tell Nintendo not to hand a big franchise over to an un-tested 2nd party developer.

So what is Nintendo\'s answer to this crappy choice? Kill all of Retro\'s other projects and fire some employee\'s.

I am not saying Retro is a great developer, we don\'t know. But, I refuse to say they are "losers" - when infact, it may just be that they was given a hopeless project.

programmers, executives, same thing in this matter.  A great programmer can make the best out of even the gloomiest of situations.

Layoffs, that\'s all it was.  When it\'s time to thin the herd you\'re either lucky enough to be in the hot part of the company or you\'re out the door.

I disagree. Retro has to crawl before they can walk. Nintendo isn\'t letting them crawl. Instead, Nintendo is tryin\' to make them walk from the very start. They handed them a project that is very sensative. And even if they make it a good FPS - people will still complain because it is nothing like classic Metriod. Not to mention, some of the great Metriod moves (the ball for example) is impossible to recreate with a FPS.

Welcome to the real world.  That\'s how the business is done my friend.  It\'s not fair, no, but that\'s the way the cookie cumbles.

Maybe so. But that does not mean the programmers are "lazy". Just means they was given a no win situation.

I think it was a stupid mistake by Nintendo.  Like you said, Nintendo is giving them a project that was way too big for Retro\'s own good.  They should have started with something smaller to warm up.
