This may be an old question for some, but is the PS2 a decent DVD movie player. I do not or never have owned a DVD player. I was considering buying a DVD player in the $200 range. However I would pay $300 for a DVD player and PS2 system in one as long as the PS2 DVD functions similarly to a $200 stand alone DVD player.
-
I find that the PS2 provides an adequate DVD player, as long as you have a regular TV and don\'t have a sound system worth over a couple hundred dollars.
If all you\'re gonna do is watch DVD\'s on a regular TV through the TV\'s speakers, then I say go for it.
For those with more elaborate entertainment systems, (i.e. HDTV and surround sound) the PS2 DVD function is not quite up to par.
-
Welcome to the boards!
Well im no movie buff and like you haven\'t owned a DVD previously. However its good to have DVD features with the PS2 to keep up with technology. As a DVD player I can\'t really fault it. Some anonying features which the manual didn\'t talk about like altering sound gauges and screen ratios which at first appear tricky, other than that its all good.
The only downfall is that the European model can\'t output colour RGB without either a modifcation or a disc swap with DVD region X.
To directly answer your question the PS2 DVD is fine and will certainly be as good if not better than the budget players you were looking at.
-
If youre from europe you can buy this to play region 1 movies :)

Some info!
DVD Region X - Import Player
Just plug in the cartridge and play import DVD Movies!
Lets you play Import DVD movies on your PS2 console. No modifications to your console are needed.
* Simply plug into either memory card slot, load the Region X CD - and Play!
* Plays PAL and NTSC#
* Play Region 1 and Region 2 DVD Movies
* Removes unwanted "Green Screen" effect when watching DVD movies on your TV via a SCART lead
# Your TV needs to be able to operate in NTSC mode - som older TV´s may not support this mode.

Troggy was right on when he said "adeqaute." Quality-wise, the average consumer would think it\'s just as good as any other player out there. Compatibilty is so-so since some DVDs have been reported that don\'t play on the PS2 (La Bamaba doesn\'t work half-way through the movie for me). User-friendly-wise it sucks. There have been countless posts that have been asking how to correctly configure their PS2 DVD playing, and there are other things that are annoying (no LCD counter/chapter display, no remaining time counter, etc...). Get beyond that and it seems to do the job- getting your DVD movies on your TV.
The home theater peoples always seem to bash it, with good reason- Click here (http://www.hometheaterhifi.com/volume_8_1/dvd-benchmark-sony-ps2-dvd-player-3-2001.html).
We need to say up front that the PS2 is a game console first and foremost. Its performance as a DVD player does not even match DVD players costing $100 less. So, if you are looking primarily for a DVD player, you can do better. If you want a game console that can double as a DVD player for the sake of convenience, then the PS2 might be what you are looking for. We are not reviewing this as a game machine here, only a DVD player.
The video output is below par for a DVD player, and if you factor in that it plays games, it\'s still a poor DVD player. Now with that said, even a poor DVD player blows away VHS and laserdisc.
-
any idea how i can play other region DVD\'s in the US version PS2..?
-
It works fine for me. I don\'t buy DVD\'s and I rent them occasionally so I find it much more then adequate. I find it to be a bonus, cause if the PS2 didn\'t have a DVD player I wouldn\'t have one nor would I be looking into buying one as well.
I watch a movie once and I rarely want to see it again, and I rarely go out of my way to watch a movie a 2nd time
-
What THX said is correct. The video quality of the PS2 DVD player is inferior even to much cheaper dedicated players. In addition, the audio quality is noticably inferior to other players, at least when using the stereo cables. I have not tested audio from the optical digital cable. The PS2 DVD player is obviously an interlaced player, but I take it you weren\'t planning on spending the money to buy a progressive model, so that doesn\'t make much difference. It also does not output widescreen anamorphic images with the current set of DVD drivers. Therefore you cannot use it adequately with a 16:9 display. You would have to use some sort of zoom mode on your widescreen TV, and that reveals a very noticable screening effect on large televisions. It\'s hard to explain, but suffice to say the image really deteriorates when you zoom it.
I think you should buy the $200 player, and use the PS2 just for games.
-
ps2 dvd player does many same things a $200 dvd player does.
It have many same function and digital audio optical output for 5.1 sound channel like Dolby Digital and DTS. Which is good for receiver, but if you have hdtv, sadly, the ps2 player run in interlaced mode like most $200 dvd player does. Which I think ps2 is a cheap dvd player that have many function a $200 stand a lone dvd player does and take up less space.
Bottom line, if you want games and dvd, ps2 is all the way to go. But if you only want a cheap dvd player, $200 is not bad a deal.
-
* Play Region 1 and Region 2 DVD Movies
It is not correcet -Play Region 1 - 6 DVD Movies
-
OK so anyway...the PS2 DVD player is actually quite good. It supports Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround Sound. Also, when I play CD\'s on the PS2, it sounds better coming out of the PS2 on the same speakers as my other receiver. The sound is awesome...the picture quality is the same as DVD players of the same price range. They have much faster DVD players now, and as technology progresses, they\'re only going to get better. Plus I heard that the Hard Drive for the PS2 will enhance both the PS2 CD player and DVD player. Good luck!!
-
I think people are being kind, compared to my Sony DVD player, which cost about £50 more than the PS2, the PS2\'s picture is pollution to my eyes, I\'m sorry for people that use it as their player, and I know some can\'t afford a dedicated player but I think even the cheapest standalone outperforms the PS2 in picture quality and especially usabillity. All IMO
-
MrWhiteUK... Sorry, but that´s nonsens ! The PS2 DVD Player is superior over all other SONY DVD Players (in Picture Quality that is) ! Several DVD Mags have tested it and all of them say, that the Picture is like on some very high end DVD Players.
The optical Output is superb (as usual) and the only think that sucks from time to time is the noise of the fan in very quiet passages of a movie... If SONYs PS2 remote hits the stores, the PS2 will also have a zoom or counter and stuff !
So, for this price the PS2 DVD Player is the BEST thing out there (and you get a PS2 !!! :D )
I´ve moded and rgb-Fixed my PS2, so I can watch all Region DVDs and have no Macrovision at all... IT ROCKS !!!
(I own a Mitsubishi 72cm TV and a 5.1 DD/dts SONY STR-DB 830QS Surround-Receiver with optical-in and High-End Speakers)
-
"The PS2 DVD Player is superior over all other SONY DVD Players (in Picture Quality that is) !"
And I\'m the one talking nonsense
From what I have seen the PS2 isn\'t superior to ANY of Sony\'s othet players, or from any other manufacturer for that matter.
(I own a 72cm Sony Trinitron, a Sony DVD-S536D player, a Sony DB-930 Silver Receiver and B&W series 2\'s for 5.1)
-
I own a Sony 7700 DVD player which many consider to be a top performer. I also own a PS2 and have done several side-by-side comparisons in both video and audio quality and have found that the PS2 stands up very well in the video department. It is certainly not as good as the 7700 but it is better than my older Toshiba player. Overall the video holds its own and unless you know what to look for, many people will not see a notible difference.
The audio section quite simply cannot measure to the 7700 however. The internal DACS of the PS2 are inferior in every way to the 7700. This does not however mean that the sound is bad...it isn\'t. It just does not produce the same soundstage or depth of field that a higher end DVD player can.
Equipment used to test:
Denon 5800
Mirage OM-6 fronts
Mirage OM-C2 center
Mirage OM-R2 rears
Mirage SubStrata 1500 sub woofer in front
ACI Titan sub in the rear.
For 300 bucks AND the ability to play all of those great PS2 games, it is a steal as a DVD player. As a standalone DVD player though you would get a better dedicated player for the 300 clams...but not by much.
-
My statement is based on a "few" tests in German DVD/Video Mags... they all say, that the stand-alone Players from SONY can "learn a lot" from the newbie PS2 !
BTW: I spoke about a PS2 WITH rgb Fix... with s-vhs it´s not that good for sure... :D
-
BTW: I spoke about a PS2 WITH rgb Fix... with s-vhs it´s not that good for sure...
You can\'t tell the difference between the PS2\'s dvd image quality and a high end Sony Player but you can between rgb scart and s-video!?
I\'m glad you can\'t tell the difference between the PS2 and standalone players, you\'re saving youreself ALOT of money.

I think you should read this article THX linked to:
http://www.hometheaterhifi.com/volume_8_1/dvd-benchmark-sony-ps2-dvd-player-3-2001.html
And then post your links to the German articles you saw. I\'m curious about what testing methods they used to arrive at their conclusion. Don\'t worry, I can read German.
When I view a DVD on the PS2, I can see considerable ringing, sometimes known as "edge enhancement" which is much more noticable than on my Toshiba SD3900 or my Sony DVP-NS700P. This is a shame because so many DVDs are transferred with way too much edge enhancement already. In addition, the PS2 video image displays very annoying artifacts when it\'s zoomed on a 16:9 display.
I have no doubt that if you connect the PS2 to a average television and hook up the stereo cables to the television\'s internal speakers, you may notice no difference between it and a stand alone DVD player. If so, that\'s ok; it will work fine for you. If one had a better television and a home theater receiver, I\'d recommend that they use the PS2 for games and a dedicated player for DVDs.
-
The most noticible discrepancies in the PS2\'s DVD output, to me, were the colour seemed over saturated, dark scenes suffered terribly (common problem w/ mpeg video) and there were lots of artifacts on the screen.
-
Average guy with average needs for DVD it will work fine.
For us junkies, um, no... Had a disc in it once. I totally noticed the difference. Plus I have a pronto remote that I don\'t want to have to re-program.
-
Coredweller I hope your german is good...
http://www.areadvd.de/hardware/testplaystation21.shtml
Sorry MrWhiteUK, but what is the problem in telling the diff. between rgb scart and s-video ?
...and no sir, I can´t see one between a "High-End" Player and a PS2... and I doubt anyone can actual "see" it !!!
-
Danke Herr Auge
I\'m going to read that article, honestly. Unfortunately I\'m leaving for Canada tomorrow, so I don\'t know how soon I can get into it. It\'s pretty long... and voll mit Fachsprache. :) I\'ll enjoy reading it over when I get the chance.
Meanwhile you might want to check out this article for an explanation of Edge Enhancement:
http://home.t-online.de/home/bjoern.roy/Guide_EE/Html/Page_01.htm
Then find a DVD that you know has NO EE, and play it on both the PS2 and another dedicated DVD player. See if you can notice a difference. I\'m going to try it myself.
Thanks.
-
 Please don´t call me Herr Auge... sounds weird... I´m not calling you "Mr. Coredweller", do I...? ;)
I´ve read the article at THX and I must say, that there are a few bugs in it ! First of all he didn´t test the rgb function of the PS2 !
Everybody knows, that the rgb output provides the BEST picture (for Europe that is)...
Have fun with the german-text... and: If in doubt... ASK ! :D

I dont even use it regularly. I borrowed a DVD from my friend and wasnt that impressed. All the special fetures are worthless to. i dot see why some of you go out and buy a dvd for 24.$$ when u can get it for 12 on vhs. i dont plan on buying or renting any dvd\'s. But to answer your Quuestion "is it worth it", of course it is. Its PS2 your buying. Pluss an adiquet DVD player as well.

Many reasons,
cause VHS absolutely sucks.
I have only averaged about 8 dollars per dvd and I have well over 100 of them
Cause Pan and Scan is for total idiots
Haven\'t rewound a VHS tape in over 9 years for Blockbuster.
Ah forget, this is a waste of time. Anyone who wants to compare DVD with VHS is not worth the effort.

Most have to do with Sony standard RCA A/V cable that packed with the ps2. Because the "composite" cable were transferring red, blue, green, and luminance through the same cable which limits picture quality!
with s-video cable, it will eliminated dark scenes and give it brightness because s-video cable separated chrominance and luminance.
or best use component video cable or for you UK people, SCART and RGB cables are commonly known cables for tv, they\'re the best, it seperate the three red blue and greeen and luminance (brightness). This will free of color artifacts and gives accurate and more colors on screen, not to mention higher resolution.
So MrWhiteUK, if your tv have S-video output or SCART or RGB, then buy the ps2 A/V accessory that support it. You will be shock with the difference

Alright, man...that\'s it. I\'m getting rid of the lame cable that came with my PS2. The visuals are less than stunning and I\'ve seen the difference. It\'s about 10-fold better quality. I don\'t know why Sony packed such stupid cables. Maybe they were trying to save money, I guess.

erm, dood did you read my posts, I use s-vid and HT is one of my main intrests so that is all old news to me. The difference between s-vid and rgb scart is fairly minimal.
I can´t see one between a "High-End" Player and a PS2... and I doubt anyone can actual "see" it !!!
I\'m sorry but that is a ridiculous statement, let me get this right, Sony make DVD players costing 10 times the cost of the PS2, but there is no difference!! Why do they bother.
What about CD players, does the PS2 compare to all high end \'audiophile\' equipment?
As I said before this thread is obviously a group of differing opinions, I have given the PS2 a fair test and to me it seems vastly inferior.
You should be glad, you are at the height of DVD technology (Sony can do no better in your eyes) your saving yerself loadsa $$$
white.

Some times dvd just don\'t play..or they skip through chapters..and the sounds is not up to top quality. AND Yes you may not get all the options and what not. BUT for what it is worth...it is a decent DVD player....I mean you can\'t expect top of the line in a 300$ video game system. It was not meant to compete as a dvd...player..It was meant to compete as a video game...system, but also give us an option to watch dvd movies...and i say it does a decent job..it is much better than any VHS I say.
-

Dude, you should really stop arguing. If you think the differences between RGB and Component are significant, especially for a 480i source, then you ARE utterly clueless. Just because you\'re in Europe doesn\'t mean you\'ll be having any better perfomance than anywhere else in the world.
And as for that article, BLEH!!! I don\'t speak German but I do not see one line graph, frequency level reading, or s/n ratio test. It is long and seemingly comprehensive, but it\'s comparable to something you\'d find on a gaming website or magazine.
I don\'t wanna heckle you or anything (I really don\'t), but you seem to think the PS2 is a reference player from reading a crummy article on the subject. Go see it perform on some decent equipment like people from this thread have, instead of telling yourself and others it\'s "superior over all other SONY DVD Players."
humbug!
-
I do not see one line graph, frequency level reading, or s/n ratio test.
...now you are on my level THX... that´s all I wanna say !!! You can´t SEE it ! It does not interest me if there´s a graph or whatever... I can SEE that the picture (with rgb -> as I´m European, I can only tell for the things I know from where I life... ;) ) on the PS2 is as good as on a 450$ Stand-Alone DVD Player. The only diff. is in the extra goodies you get out of this Player (build in 5.1 decoder, zoom, low noise houseing, codefree, playback of DVD-R or Music-DVDs etc.)
To bring this to an end: For the normal (not high-end) user, the PS2 is the best way to enjoy the brilliant DVD picture and sound... PLUS have some fun in playing great games... I guess there´s no boubt in that ?! :D

I don\'t care about a high-end DVD player. My PS2 works just fine. I\'m not the kind of person that uses all of the options anyway. Although I like to watch X-Men in French sometimes...:D Funny as heck.

DVD is alot better than VHS, thats why it\'s worth more.
You don\'t need to rewind or fast-forward, the deleted scenes are worth checking out if you have alot of time on your hands like i do...bleh..
if all you wanna do is see the movie though, and if you\'re not fussed about how sophisticated the features are, the ps2 would be a decent DVD player. I already have my own multi regional DVD player though, and am still considering the ps2 for the sake of games. so it all depends on how fussy you are...

The picture is way better, there is no d**m thing called "tracking", you can switch to any scene that you want, at any time (not having to rewind or fast-forward to your favorite part of the movie), you don\'t have to rewind it when you\'re done, you get cool options (behind-the-scenes, interviews, hidden scenes, etc...). I could go on why DVD is so much better. Plus VHS gets old over time and the tracking only gets worse. With DVD, I can just use my trusty scratch remover (which I don\'t use that often because I don\'t destroy my things).
Plus...you don\'t need multiple tapes to watch a long movie, because there is so much space on the DVD, you can have it all on one disc.
I don\'t like VHS anymore, but it\'s always good to have it handy, just in case...;)
-
VHS??
Buy Gladiator or SPR, put it in your PS2 then plug a good sound system in and tell me DVD\'s aren\'t worth it :D
I have 2 DVD players, PS2 is as good as my £300 player.
-
I think it is cool, i wouldn\'t have bought a DVD player alone, I would by a DVD player if it cost $100, and when i say that, a really good DVD player for that money. :D
If on the other hand a DVD player could serve as a recording device like a VCR i would have bought one a long time ago, instead of buying a PS2 and getting one in the box...
-
A very huge DVD website or mag did a testing on the best DVD players. PS2 was LAST as a DVD player, they said a cheap 99 dollar one could increase the quality more than 50% Its not up to par with almost any DVD player in the last 2 years.
-
WOW. I finaly hooked up a real DVD player to my home entertainment system and the DVD is great. Before i saw those lines on the top and bottom. Now its awsome on my big screen TV.(rather than my PS2 on my TV in my room). Thanx, Now i know. get a real DVD player if u have a entertainment system(thats big). DVD\'s are soooo worth it. :bounce: I love it. I bought hackers and gladiator and fight club. I love it:bounce:

Is your dvd player a progressive scan? Because progressive scan dvd player claim to eliminates horizontal lines on screen.

"horizontal lines " ?????
Sounds like you´re watching DVD on PS2 via S-Video ?! That´s crap...!
A friend of mine owns a "big" entertainment system (10.000$) and last wekend we connected the PS2 to it... guess what ?!
NO diff. between his 600$ stand-alone DVD Player and the PS2 !!!
..and the Games looked great on that Plasma TV :D !

Oh yeah!!? I have a 19" 12 year old Toshiba baby!! ;) :( I\'m getting a new TV soon though...a BIG one...
Why did your friend pay $10,000 for a TV? How big is it??
-
I know someone who sold their PS2 the week after it launched for like $350. During the time he owned it, he played some of my DVDs. After he sold it, he took the money and bought a $150 DVD player.
He took that back too as he found out the hard way that the PS2 DVD player was a midrange quality DVD player and the cheap stand alone DVD player he got was no better than his VCR.
This was last year, fall of 2000, where as I mentioned before, the PS2 was of midrange quality. At the time the PS2 was revealed to the public(February of 2000), it was among the best DVD player out there. This year, with technology advancing at its current pace and computer chips getting cheaper, the quality of the PS2 as a DVD player certainly has its shortcomings. But what did you expect by this time?
BTW, my friend who sold his PS2 bought another. :D
