TOKYO--Japan\'s Fair Trade Commission (FTC) said on Thursday that Sony broke fair-trade rules by pressuring retailers to sell software for its PlayStation video game machines at set prices and through predetermined channels.

Sony Computer Entertainment (SCE), wholly owned by the electronics giant, also hampered free distribution by directing wholesalers to sell only to retail outlets and for retailers to only sell to consumers, the FTC said.

It told the company to immediately halt the practice.
Sony Computer accepted the ruling. ``We respect the FTC\'s stance and will make sure that our policy of not setting resale conditions on wholesalers for PlayStation hardware and software is observed,\'\' it said.

Sony, facing the launch of rival game consoles later this year, recently cut the domestic recommended retail price of its PlayStation 2 game console to $282 from $320.

Last year, 17,040 software titles for PlayStation 1 and PlayStation 2 were released. Sony expects the same number of titles to come out this year.

Before the FTC\'s announcement, shares in Sony rose 4.84 percent, in line with other high-tech shares that ended higher in the Tokyo Stock Market.

The high-tech recovery pushed the Nikkei 225 average up 3.68 percent

Doubt it. Although they do like to keep their prices high in the states to make their products seem more valuable than they are.
