Title: HDD via OPM
Post by: on August 05, 2001, 03:49:47 PM
Just a little tid-bit in OPM about HDD:

These are the games in Japan that support HDD, and how:

FFX: HDD\'s stored data cache for faster load times.
Jade Cocoon 2: faster load tiomes + storing of monster creations.
Capcom vs. SNK 2: faster load times.
Atelier Lillie: faster load times.
A-Train 2001: storage of snapshots and level designs.
Beatmania 5th Style: faster load times.

Mostly faster load times, and some basic storage.  Not all these games may support the drive in other countries through.  We\'ll have to wait and see, promising though.

They need alot more compelling reasons to own it. Faster load time doesn\'t justify any kind of purchase.

40 gig hard-drive

It is possible to use the hard-drive as a VRAM...hehehahahahehe.  probably not.Sometimes, technology confuses me. I wonder why can\'t the harddrive act as a VRAM since it can contain load of memory.  Anybody here know?  :D

You all are crazy. Ofocurse the games comming out now won\'t use the hard drive much. its only been out a short while and hte games where already mostly done. Now thats its out games will be made to take a big advantage of it. Like Final Fantasy XI.

The only problem is that for the games to make full use of the HDD, it would require the HDD, and it will take a while before enough PS2 owners have an HDD for game developers to deem it worth-while.

I think everyone who has a PS2 needs a HDD!.... I mean..... It would be so easy then! And fast.

For hte game to take full advantage wouldn\'t require the Hard Drive. Lets say if you have the hard drive you get more textures or viewing distance because the information is always quick at hand. Ofcourse the already well known decrease load times. The option to save to the hard drive. the options are endless. Maybe they have more levels in a Strategy game.  Just little insentives. Boinus material as it were.

This whole hardrive thing is never going to catch on with developers unless Sony started shipping ps2\'s with it included.  Out of the 15 million people who own ps2\'s, hardly any of them will pay that much money for something that might not even really get used.

Before the PS2 ever even launced I knew (as many of you did) that the PS2 would be getting a HDD/modem at a later date.

Knowing that, from day ONE (10-26-00) I have been anticipating this device.

I really don\'t mind if only 10% of games(My made up figure) use this device. I\'m not currently into online games so it\'s all new to me anyway.

Plus, using the PS2 as a browser(and e-mail) is more compelling than online play for me(I hate having to boot up my computer just to check my mail-- slow ass thing!!).

Either way it will be interesting to see what emerges:)

I think this pack only will sell well if the companies begin to do great online games... if not...

Heck...I\'m buying it. I just like the fact that you can download new levels, texture designs, weapons, and characters like the PC. I can\'t wait for online gaming...;) I will wait for it to go down in price though first...

I too shall buy HDD, been planning on it since I got my PS2.  Faster load times is more than enough, but the added features to games make it even sweeter.  I hope the predictions of the potential flop end up as mud.

i will have to wait and see what games that are coming out for it (FFXI, yada yada yada) and then if the price drops to bout 100 for the package, then ill get it.

otherwise, i would happily pay 49.99 for an eithernet card to play games online.

but hopefully this addon will have a couple great games for it when it is launched in the us.

Browsing should work through your own provider.  As it seems right now, each individual game will be working on seperate networks, averaging $5 a month to play that particular game online.  I bet that when Square comes out with a couple online games they will all play through the PlayOnline network for the same $5 a month for all square games.

The actual internet connection is up to you.  (I\'m planning on going through my dorm\'s "free" cable service.

so I can run a cord through my computer and get this all for free right? Or still have to pay?

I, for one, hope the HDD fails worse than 32X or Virtual Boy.

I just want the world to see that add-ons just don\'t work, as was shown by Sega (and NEC and Nintendo). I don\'t want to have to buy an add-on to play games I want to on a system I don\'t see me buying games for, a few years down the road.

Plus, it will tarnish Sony\'s rep and will encourage them to make a better product, al la Dreamcast for Sega. Also, it will give the other guys a chance if Sony\'s god like image is cast down.

of course, I am a vengeful, hateful Sega fan.

One, you cannot hook it up through your computer. im sure somewhere down the road someone will devise a way but its not suported. You can get a Hub and run the ethernet to your PS2 from the cable/dsl modem that way. Two, All games will not require a pay to play. Square has stated that thier PLAYONLINE will require a mountlhy service and that youmust have this service to play Square games but that is all. Twisted Metal and Armored Core and others will nto be Pay to play.

I beleive thats all for right now.

RIP HDD. Overpriced, underused, and unnecessary.

Yes Caspian, I know you are in love with it, so please don\'t respond to this. Pretend like it never happened.
