What would it drop to?
BTW, Ico is THE main reason for me wanting to get a PS2. That game will be a magical experience, I know it.

Will PS2 get a price drop when GC is realeased?
probably... maybe not right away.... but soon after the launch...

Smart to drop it from $299 to $279 at Xbox launch, just to undercut them.
They won\'t be able to touch Gamecubes price (est. $199)
By Christmas they should drop it to $250.

Someone from Sony awhile said they had absolutely no plans to drop this price when Xbox and GameCube are released because they think they can hold their own at a 299$ price. A member posted it.
So, I guess the answer is,no. :D

First off, there is no reason for Sony to announce a price drop months ahead of time. Of course they are going to deny a price drop if journalist question them on it right now. Admitting that there is plans to a price drop would hurt current sales.
Second, I think you will see a very slight drop in price right before launch of the systems. I may be wrong, so don\'t anyone go quoting me on this in November. ;)

Clip is right on this one. They have no reason to announce a price cut now. :cool:

Clip os right, the smartest thing would be to deny price drops and then suddenly drop the price, but probably more likely a few days/weeks after the launch.
Then again, they could threaten to raise the price next week. The peoiple would be like "I better buy one now before the hike-up" and then when gc and xbox launch they\'d all be "Well darn, spent my money on PS2 already. . . oh well."
I know that would never happen, but I enjoy coming up with multiple hypothetical situations.

Anyways, most likely scenario = Clips, but I wouldn\'t bet on it.

that is exactly what ddayrl said to someone. they are just practicing good buisness. they will suprise you. they have the money, and they know that they have to stay on top during the launch, so yes, i think they will do it, and yes i thing they might even put it to 199$.

Sorry, I just like quoting you just for fun.
I think PS2 not going to cost that less by Christmas (opinion), maybe $250 because of the Xbox but not as cheap as NCube. Just my guess.

yeah its all guessing, and i think sony knwos that their main competition is the x box, so you may be right on the price, but who knows?? sony has the money to take losses, and if they cut their price down, iit would help the sales so dramatically, it would be good for the company. if people who are inbetween getting a x box and a ps2, see the ps2 price drop and open the world of great titles to them, they will most likely go for ps2.

I say no and if they are going to do a price drop they should go all out for 199.99 because at 279.99 or 250.99 ppl are still going to buy xbox if they want it.. only how they are going to get y0u to think about it if they did a 199.99 now that would make you think about which console you want for your money.

dude please try to use some smarts
why would any company on the face of the earth announce a price break on a product 6 months in advanced for a product that is selling consistently
all that would do is make a significant number of people wait for the price break instead of running out and buying the product now
in the PS2\'s case that would not only hurt hardware sales but software sales which would in turn piss off developers and publishers
I Guarentee a PS2 price break this Christmas season

Just like Sony did for the Australian launch for the N64. The day the N64 was released, Sony dropped $100 off the retail price of the PSX and ran full page ads in most of the major newspapers announcing it. From all accounts it worked very well and it is likely that Sony may do the same thing for the XBox/GC launch.

The will definitely be a price drop...just how much is uncertain. The Price Drop will come by Christmas. Either at the exact time of the XBOX launch or afterwards. Since SONY considers XBox its main competition. It certainly won\'t enter the GameCube price range..I\'m guessing PS2 $250 by Thanksgivng.

well from what you have said, thats good news. if they do the same for the ps2, which is probable, they would be able to compete with gamecube\'s price, while totally destroying x box\'s chances at launch. it is a smart buisness move, but i think they want to sell more consoles now for insurance, that they will be able to take the hit.

Sony cannot even compete with Nintendo, due to the extremely cheap price of the GC - not to mention Nintendo has their own target audience. The big worry for Sony would have to be MS , so lowering the console price down by $20 - $30 dollars is enough to secure quite a few sells right before or after the Xbox launch.
