Title: Best movie I\'ve ever seen
Post by: Samwise on August 12, 2001, 10:08:16 AM
...very close at least. The movie is Memento. That movie is awesome! If you haven\'t seen it then I suggest you do ASAP. It\'s movies like that, that makes me forget trash like JP3, PH and Tomb Raider. Finally an intelligent movie that actually took more work by the script writer than the effects studio. I thank the people behind the movie for giving me a little bit of faith in Hollywood back.

The script is genius, the editing is great, the plot is fantastic... you don\'t \'get it\' until the very end of the movie - and that\'s even if you see the end at the beginning of the movie (it\'s told backwards, because the protagonist has a disease that makes him unable to use his short term memory for more than 15 mins or so at a time, so you see it from his point of view)... Sounds complicated, but trust me - it works.

Summa summarum: Watch it!

The movie is fantastic. It\'s #11 on IMDB.com\'s Top 250 movies of all time. "Unfortunatly" it isn\'t a super big budget movie, so other crap movies get in the spotlight instead. Capitalism at its best.

Here\'s a paste from the user comments at Internet Movie Database:

I just saw this film on the big screen about 2 hours ago. It was absolutely incredible!!! It begins with a bloody murder scene, then shows the man getting murdered in reverse, and goes on to tell the story. The catch is that is goes in reverse order. The events which you have previously witnessed begin to fall into place as the film progresses. This film is brilliant. Anyone who did not like the movie probably does not understand it. It is a somewhat complicated story but if you are able to follow it and are able to put a choppy storyline together you will LOVE IT!!! If you have the attention span of a cricket or are not bright, I don\'t advise watching. If you\'re tired of the crappy no story, special effect, gratuitous nude/fight scene junk that is out there, you should check this out![/b]

I think it\'s out on R1 DVD September 4th (and R2 the same month).

Edit: I found another passage that\'ll help explain the plot:

You have to pay attention, and stay with this movie until the end, because it is shown backwards…that\'s right, from ending to beginning! No, people aren\'t walking and driving cars backwards, but they show about five minute segments, starting with the end, and then overlapping a little, going backwards in time. There\'s a reason for this, because the storyline is about a man who is trying to find his wife\'s killer. The problem, however, is that since the murder, he has ZERO short term memory, so he needs to snap photographs and jot notes to himself to help him the next day, or even the next five minutes. Sounds like a movie to miss, but it actually was done pretty well, and worth it if you like flicks that make you pay attention. (Unfortunately, most movies DON\'T!) B

Samwise:

I saw this picture about two months ago, but then I live in Hollywood and most US movies are released here even before they reach the rest of the United States.  I would have thought that international distribution would take much longer, but it\'s great that you\'re getting Memento right now.

I agree that it\'s a really great movie, and I was thrilled to finally encounter a piece of cinema that actually demanded some active thinking and concentration from the audience.  I noticed several people in the theater actually get confused and frustrated by it, but I just had to laugh at them.    If you have even half a brain you won\'t have any problems.  In fact, you\'ll love the idea of seeing it more than once in order to fully put all the pieces together.  Unfortunately in LA we have more than a few people with 1/4 or 1/5 of a brain, and they had some difficulties.

If you haven\'t read it yet, then you MUST read this Salon.com article about Memento:

http://www.salon.com/ent/movies/feature/2001/06/28/memento_analysis/index.html

Whenever you get it, you might want to consider seeing a horror film called "Session 9."  It\'s very thought provoking too, but not nearly as complex as Memento.  It actually scared me a little bit, which is saying something because NOTHING scares me in movies anymore.  I just saw it yesterday.

A group of five men working for a hazardous materials remediation company are hired to remove asbestos from an abandoned mental hospital in Massachusetts.  They have a few conflicts and stresses between them from the beginning, but then they begin to be influenced by the ghost of a former patient.  The patient was a woman who had multiple personality disorder and was the victim of some awful "tragedy."  One of the workmen begins listening to the discarded tapes of her counselling sessions...  There are some really scary moments in this picture; I recommend it, but I can\'t say any more without giving something away.

Excuse me, but what movie are you talking about?  I believe that both films mentioned above have already been released in the US.

My favorite movie of all time would have to be Dawn of the Dead.  George Romero is a genious.  I wish that he hadn\'t turned down the role of director in the upcoming Resident Evil movie.  At least he has signed on as producer.  For that fact alone I will go see it.

When there\'s no more room in hell, the dead will walk the earth.

One of my favorite quotes.
