Title: Q :How fast are computers in 2051 ? help me plz, tech person!
Post by: Knotter8 on August 18, 2001, 02:00:45 PM
I\'m so friggin CURIOUS ! I would really like to know
a good estimation. What I did is ; take a household
pc of, say 1000 Mhz, then take the law of Moore :
50 years makes double processor capacity by factor
25 : so 1000 X 2to factor 25 makes about 35,000,000,000 Mhz ?

A household PC in 2051 at 35 billion Mhz ?
I could be terribly wrong.. plz help me !
Why ?!  Because I saw Terminator today again and I\'d like
to know if computers will be fast enough to make intelligent robots like that by that time. Then I might, just, live to see that before I die ( I\'m 23 now )!
This question burns me up to frustration, someone plz
give me a solid estimate.

You\'re a retard (https://psx5central.com/community/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.duhspot.com%2Fusers%2Fsmiley%2Fs%2Fcwm%2F3dlil%2Fretard.gif&hash=72f2400b703b4cec73c996a8c0b4cc8780f8a0b5) There is no way to tell how fast computers will be then. In 2005-2006, IBM, Toshiba, and Sony will release their chip that runs at 200 GHz. That\'s a big leap in chip performance. There\'s no telling what kind of computers there will be, or if there will even be computers...probably devices that hotsync into your brain...:D I dunno...but this topic is useless.

Also...it\'s not accurate to base performance off Megahertz, since that doesn\'t matter at all to the chip performance.

and help me find some answers ! :bounce:
I just wanna know if a \'Terminator\' is possible in 2051 !
Just guessing...
...And Evisc.! don\'t call me a retard cause I don\'t
know that ! I know lotsa other stuff, just not that specific
thing ! That\'s were questions are for !

So, better remember that Evisc !

Well I\'m sorry just this is what it\'ll be like in the future..... *10 Second DVD Movie* "I just hate downloading these movies.... They take so damn long!" *File Complete* "Jeez I wanted that 9.99 seconds ago!"

You want an estimate right?

I would say a CPU from 50 years in the future will be roughly 1000 times more powerful then a top of the line P4 today ...

sony is in the process of developing a new processor, codenamed "cell" that is very very fast, and is possibly what they will put into the "ps3".

i dont know the exact specs!!!

SonyWeb.com (http://sonyweb.com/features/insidethecell.html) has some of the info on that.

He he... I love that picture!:bounce:

Here\'s some quotes:
Quote
As a company now committed to videogame entertainmnet, Sony is planning long-term and has indeed begun thinking about PS3. In fact, this past March, it came to light that Sony had entered into an agreement with Toshiba and IBM to design an all-new, extremely powerful broadband-saavy processor currently code-named The Cell. The Cell will be used in many consumer electronic appliances, and that does include PS3.

The investment by the three companies will be considerable. In fact, according to SonyWeb\'s own news report, the initial research and development cost on The Cell will reach $400 million USD.

However, this is where the truth and the rumor part ways. The rumor goes on to suggest this means PS3 will be available in a year or two and that, therefore, buying a PS2 is a bad short-term investment. Nothing could be further from the truth, because the news sites and reporters and rumor-mongers who suggest this never went on to read the rest of the press release... or worse, didn\'t care and hoped to intentionally deceive consumers.
And also:
Quote
The Cell is not being developed exclusively for use in PS3. In fact, the companies hope to use it in many diverse applications, such as other consumer electronic devices, high-end computer graphics workstations, and servers. But due at least in part to its design, which makes it uniquely qualified to power broadband-enabled applications, it is expected to be the processing heart of PlayStation 3.
Yepper!:D

Stop with the inappropriate smilies, please...

OK now...the top of the line Pentium 4 isn\'t as fast as the top of the line Mac G4. In fact, the Mac G4 is about 80% faster and comes standard with a 64MB NVidia 3 card...:D But enough of that.

They don\'t call 1000MHz Megahertz. They call it a gigahertz.

1000 Megahertz = 1 Gigahertz
1000 Gigahertz = 1Terahertz

And so on. I would have listed more, but I have no idea what comes after that...:shy:

The Mac only get\'s a speed advantige when they enable the AltiVec unit (think PS.2 vectir units) in the program in use.And the x86 code is old and kinda outdated, Apple\'s PPC code is better fewer and less complex instructions.

The P4 and the Athlon will beat the G4 in most applications, but programs like Photoshop will continue to be better on the Mac since it\'s highly optimized for that platform

The G4 is getting too old to be a real competitor, Motorola hasn\'t really been working on them for about 2 years, the only things they did were to change the pipeline from the basic 4 stages to 7 stages to increase clockspeed.

And there has been alot of talk about Motorola closing it\'s semiconductor division, which put\'s Apple in a bad place, the only alternitive for Apple for designing and making processors is IBM (that is, if they want to do it) but Motorola won\'t license it\'s AltiVec technoligy to IBM,and Apple has designed all their programs and OS X around AltiVec.

Mhz should double every 18 months til about the year 2010...then it will slow down...

but thats based on the fact that we will not discover better chip technology...which we prolly will...

but Mhz isnt the best way of judging how fast your processor is (unless comparing a P4 1Ghz against other P4\'s)

In 2050 you won\'t be seeing the processor types we have now. I\'d guess we\'d use quantum computing, which is by far much faster than the current crop of computers - because it can make billions of calculations in the time a normal computer makes one cycle (or something, I\'m not a big expert on the subject). The problem is that it\'s hard to control. But in some 50 years they\'re bound to have much better technology (if we don\'t kill eachother before that, that is). Perhaps quantum computers is the key to artificial intelligence... dum dum dum .

I really can\'t see why some of you ppl think my thread is
all that stupid. C\'mon, 2050 - 2060 would be just in reach of
my lifespan, and most of you out there. So, ain\'t it fun to guess
a bit how computers and AI will be at the end of our lives.
Maybe those computers will even help to expand our lives, who
knows (exactly)? ...exactly : Nobody.

Also think about the fact that you\'ll be in your 70\'s or even dead by that time, it\'s not that great. I don\'t liek to think about the future that far ahead. It\'s pointless and we have no idea what\'s in store. Looki how far we\'ve come in the past 50 years now. ;)

Yeah this thread makes as much sense as a Metal Gear/007 combination.......oops

Anyways, Samwise is correct we will probably be using quantum computing or something similar.

BTW, I believe Moores law says processing power doubles every 18 months not 50 years; but even that figure gets smaller everyday.

And? I don\'t fear death. Who knows, I could get run over by a truck tomorrow, or I could die when I\'m a 100 years old. But the possibility of enough compuing power to make \'real\' A.I. is exciting I think. Of course I don\'t know "what\'s in store" but nothing\'s wrong with educated guesses - or just guesses in general.

Sometimes I really don\'t get some of you people.
