In what has to have been the lowest key launch for any Nintendo product in the company\'s illustrious history, Gamecube finally appeared in Japan on Friday to a lukewarm reception, packing a tiny line-up of three games and falling short of Nintendo\'s official figure of 500,000 units. Nintendo Europe confirmed to CVG this morning that 450,000 machines entered Japan last week, with the rest of the ship-out expected to arrive "imminently". Japanese news service Nikkei is reporting that sell-through may have been as low as 60 percent, meaning as few as 270,000 consoles may have found their way in Japanese gamers\' hands. Compared to PlayStation 2 sales exceeding 980,000 units within 24 hours in Japan, the phrase "soft launch" has taken on something of a new meaning when applied to Gamecube. Nintendo\'s ploy was obviously deliberate, and many are now pointing to the lack of a Mario-only game as the reason for such a low-key launch, but the spectre of hardware production problems has already been mentioned today.

That sucks for nintendo. Well they couldn\'t even break sony\'s record. Hmmmmmmmm........I wonder how xbox will do in japan after this with nintendo. This just shows japan is sony\'s turf.

It\'s a nintendo home console, I\'m not supprised. Everyone knows the Japanese just fall short of worshiping sony. They were perfectly content with their PS2s. Plus with only 3 games at launch it\'s not like they really have any must play games.

Well I think its safe to assume ps2 is going to rule japan which means you know japaneses game developers see them. So what are they going to do? FLock to the ps2 even more. Well now I fear for the xbox sells over there. :thepimp: :thepimp: :thepimp:

For someone that obviously doesn\'t like Nintendo or its games you seem to dig up a lot of Nintendo info. Albeit predominately negative info.

Uhhhhhhhh.......gohan who are you talking about? I just expected better sales numbers than this. This is sad considering ps2 sold all 500,000 of there U.S. shipment and in japan it sold 980,000. I just expected more from nintendo.:thepimp: :thepimp: :thepimp:

First of all who is saying it will break ps2 record? And bet the next playstation won\'t break the ps2 record either.
I think only once every Millennium and console can launch such crappy games and sell that big.

I figured they could atleast sold 500,000 which would have about half of what ps2 did. AS for ps3 breaking ps2 record well...........your proably right it won\'t.:thepimp: :thepimp:

That\'s the reason why PS3 could break the PS2 record...future PS3 launch games could only get better than PS2\'s ones :)

One would hope because out of the seven launch games I\'ve bought I hate every damn one of them and out of the 20 some games I\'ve bought, I only enjoy Gradius, Onimusha and Resident:Code Veronica X...

THE QUALITY of games had nothing to do with the ps2 success at launch.

I was one of the first italian guys who got the PS2 on March 2000...and I did it because I\'m a console-whore...I perfectly knew that the first games wouldn\'t have pushed the PS2...and I knew that I\'d have had to be patient for great games coming out...
...and right now I really can\'t wait for the games I was waiting for...MGS2,SH2,FFX,ICO,J&D,GT-online,ecc...but again...I was disappointed at first...and even if I knew of the high step learning curve of PS2...I was expecting something more at lauch...

Did I say it ? :)
Read again my post and you\'ll smell a little sarcasm...
IMO Great Games at Launch are very important for the success of a console at Launch...but sure it\'s not the only factor(hype,people\'s trust)
I was joking at first...I meant that a hyped console with great launch games(or comparatively better than PS2) could sell better than a hyped console with poor games...don\'t you agree?...so PS3 could even break the PS2 record...only this......:)
-
Well, with only 3 launch games, the poor sales do not surprise me. Yes, I know they are good games, but when the public sees a console launched with 20-odd games, they are immediately attracted to the console, wether th games are good or not. 3 games is simply not enough.

 Sucks for Nintendo. It will probably be just as bad in America

Better for me. Then I won\'t have to worry about a shortage. :)

Haha, a well-needed positive spin.
About the "QUALITY doesn\'t sell systems," absolutely right. Quantity over quality, that\'s why gamers gave Nintendo such flack back in 96. The launch line-up for North America lost about 6 Nintendo published titles in recent weeks and it\'s the stupidest decision they could have made, especially after the ongoing Jap launch.
Let\'s not forget that the global economy is all f\'ed right now, too. And damn is my Nintendo stock taking a thrashing! If you\'re getting a GCN, think of me and buy an extra controller. ;]
