Holy Crap...I was right all along! Saturn was freaking amazing, I demand hi-rez pics, immediatedly!

We both agreed on the Saturn\'s graphical prowess LONG ago. Looks like Shenmue downgraded to Metal Gear Solid quality characters and backgrounds. That\'s not a knock against the screens, Altered, MGS was probably one of the best graphical show pieces of any 32-bit console. To see it running like this on the Saturn is amazing.
-
Yeah, but basically nobody else was convinced with that topic like me and you. It just looks so cool to see the tattoo guy (mind is blank) in 32-bit gfx, he still looks crazy, but has retained many of his 128-bit qualities. This looks amazing for Saturn, and it makes me mad that the American public ignored it to the point that great looking and playing games like this were never released.
Think fo the possibilites of the announced NiGHTS2 game back in the day! and SOnic X-Treme, Panzer Dragoon 4, etc.
yikes!

Actually, to a certain extent I\'m glad this game was never released on the Saturn. I think it would have lost a lot in terms of production values (no way that had a comparable budget to that of the DC version), and the overall atmosphere of the game would simply not have been the same.
Not to say that I was glad at the demise of the Saturn, afterall it was the console that brought about the sidescrolling shooter renassansce (sp?).
-
and the overall atmosphere of the game would simply not have been the same.
That\'s like saying that MGS had nowhere near the presence of MGS2 simply because of it\'s graphical style. In that respect, I highly disagree. A game can be just as moving and just as amazing even in the proverbial graphical low end of the spectrum. FF7, MGS, and many other games have not lost their emotional touch even though their graphics were dated and the same could have been said for Shenmue.
What excites me most about seeing this would have been knowing that they might have been on chapter 4 or so by now if the originals had been released on the Saturn. Sadly, us Americans have yet to even touch part 2.

Indeed that\'s exactly what I\'m saying. Atmosphere is pretty much a function of the graphics in a game, as is emotion (to a lesser degree). That\'s not to say Silent Hill was not terryfying, because it sure scared the #%$@! out of me, or that Chrono Trigger was not a genuine adventure, but as far as atmosphere is concerned improved graphics really do help that much more. A great part of the experience of playing Shenmue was the feeling that you were actually in a living town of some sort, and I frankly doubt the Saturn could have pulled that off effectively. Rather in the same manner that the town in Silent Hill has little semblance to an actual town because of the limitations of the Playstation hardware, I don\'t think the illusion of Yokosuka would have been realized with the limited capacities of the Saturn (compared to the DC).
Note I never mentioned graphical STYLE in my post. Shenmue for the Saturn, and for the DC had the same graphical style (semi-realistic), hence if your going for a realistic style the better the graphics the better the atmosphere. The actual style of the graphics is a completely different matter.
With regards to the actual progression of the story it would be kind of cool to be going into the latter chapters by now, but thinking of what could have been is rather pointless.
-
I don\'t know, Saturn was pretty untapped, look at those pictures, it looks exactly the same as DC, with lower poly counts, IMO. I am sure they could\'ve done an almost carbon copy (-graphics, of course) and by then, like Ryu said, we could\'ve had Shenmue IV out here. It would\'ve helped DC\'s popularity in Japan and the states, too. Perhaps to the point of fueling the popularity of both systems to the point of selling millions more.
Look at Final Fantasy VII for PSX.

Personally, I don\'t see what is so special about those pics. The models have very low poly counts(compared to the DC version) and the textures pretty much suck. There is no telling whether or not the could have acheived the scope the did on the saturn. For all we know Shenmue would have been half the size of the DC version.
-
I think it looks amazing for what the Saturn can do. I wish there were better shots of it. Though if the rumor is true, we can hopefully see it ourselves when we get Shenmue II.
Now as far as the Saturn version representing the same scope of things as the DC version, I doubt it. Not the polygon limitations, but RAM. Remember all the time elements in Shenmue, I doubt they\'d manage to squeeze all of the town\'s \'life\' in the Saturn\'s puny RAM. There\'s always the RAM cart, but I still don\'t think it would be in the same grand scale as the DC version.
Now what I do agree on is that if Shenmue had existed on the Saturn, the DC version would have generated more sales, no doubt. Though I\'m glad they decided to hold it off for the Dreamcast.

They would\'ve released the 8meg RAM cart, like they were planning to do with VF3 on Saturn a long time ago.
with 8 more megs of RAM, they could\'ve made this huge, still. I wish there was a playable demo or something, this is a Sega Afficiando\'s (me) dream, I must play it, experience it!! ahhhhh!!!!
Eric Jacob
-
That is pretty damn amazing in itself. Personally I think, the Saturn was untapped potenial at its fullest.

I think they look great!
-
wow, i never though tfor a second that saturn was capeable of these graphics. wow, i really had forgotten that it was 32 bit . jeez that is quite amazing for a saturn...
-
Im sitting here still wondering whats so special about those screens
-
How did I know you were going to say that?
go download the video, then pop in any PSX game you want on your PSX (your first console, obviously) and watch how the graphics for the very incomplete Shenmue graphics engine beats it, trust me, go watch the video and open your damn eyes.
Even fastson did and I thoguht he would be with you on your strange opinion (no offense fastson).

Enough with your mindless bashing of me, I just said that they dont look steller like some of you are saying, their not bad though, and the obviously PSX was my first console comment is obviously an idiotic comment, my first console was NES, but you were close:rolleyes:
-
I don\'t care, that last comment was added in there because you act like Sony is your god.
Now, download the video, and come back and tell me. The lighting on the last part is especially jaw-dropping. Look at the inside wherehouse part, :!
Eric Jacob
-
You never give up do you Altered? Yer in a for a long fight ya know, Bosco is jus too blindsided.. er.. cynical about sega to give these pics any merit.
I think they look great, better than anything I\'ve seen so far on the PSX. (Which, considering the hardware is doing some amazing things in it\'s own right). It wouldda been a real gem for the Saturn. I\'m glad they held off on it though, cause I probly never wouldda gotta chance to play it if it had. I think Sega\'s total Saturn shipments for northern Indiana totalled about 7 units. They\'re probably still sitting on the shelf at WalMart too, collecting dust since the Wally Worlds up here never saw fit to order games for it. Way ta go Brainiacs.
-
\'Tis a shame (Bozco and Saturn) It had so much potential, yet the good ole boys like Bozzy, N-Player, and Futami never would\'ve given it a chance, even if the PSX\'s shiny graphics were on Saturn, as shown in this extremely incomplete demo on Saturn!
Did you see the wherehouse part where the light is coming in through all the windows and blinds?!?!?! WOWZAS!
Eric Jacob

Im not gonna download because I only have a 56k, from the pics it only looks like MGS on the PSX graphics wise, sorry if I dont think they\'re that good but there is no reason to call my cynical or a sega hater, and Altered Beast, the only reason I didnt buy a Saturn is because a friend of mine had the PSX and recommended it to me

You just don\'t get it.. These screens prove what the Saturn could do even more so. It was always said that the PS was the 3D machine and the Saturn was the master of 2D. These screens prove that the Saturn could also handle 3D just as well - if not better than the PS.
Not only that, it looks damn good. You say, it looks like MGS for the PS - well, that game looked damn good also for its time. Of course these screens aren\'t specatular by today\'s standards, but by older standards they are amazing.
-
OK
-Sonyfan you say Im to cynical to give them "any merit" but I said they werent bad, I just dont think they are that great
-and L-I-C its been a while since I ever played Saturn so this is probably why Im not so "stunned" by these screens, but they arent bad at all

Point taken. I recommend finding a copy of \'Nights into Dreams\' and trying it out. Stunning.
-
L-I-C, if the Shenmue video, which looks amazing compared to any 32-bit game doesn\'t impress him, you think NiGHTS will? You fool...first things he will say:
1)there is tons of popup
2)too short
3)Mario 64 is better!
4) Mindless comment number 4
Of course I am not wowed by those screens in terms of graphics. Next to today\'s games, they look horrible. But when you look at the Saturn and PSX war of long ago, many people sad Saturn couldn\'t do 3D well, light sourcing, etc. but they are all demonstrated in the video, which has since been deleted from the site (although not before I downloaded it...on 56k :)) I take games into perspective of their categories. I am not wowed by Street Fighter 2\' graphics for SMS, today, but in terms of 8-bit games, NOTHING looks better.
I still stand by my opinion that this is the Best. Looking 32-bit Game. Ever. and it was nowhere close to being completed on Saturn.

now altered you should look more carefully before you say its not there as it took me a good five minutes but i found it at that site
mainly it took me awhile since i had to read through that non sense looking for a link - but here is a dl i got from the main site
http://www.fileplanet.com/dl/dl.asp?ClassicGaming/saturn/shenmue_saturn.mpeg
there and i have to agree those are impressice the most impressive thing to me is the character faces - look they have noses - lol some recent games dont have characters with actual noses :)
thanks for the info dude
-
Thanks subby, I have updated my sig!
Gotta let the real gamers with cable modems or free time (like me) to download this Picasso.
Eric Jacob
-
I think it looks like pure crap IMO. Anti-aliasing is REALLY needed. I can\'t stand to look at it even though it probably is the best looking 32-bit game.
-
o_o;... Jumpman, this is the Saturn. :o

Your worse than Jumpman is, you dont even know what to say to me so you just shoot comments out of your ass, first you call me a sony fanboy, now I all of a sudden think Mario 64 is god, I never liked the game and I think its boring as hell, and I think that Mindless comment thing would much rather suit you considering you talk before you think
-
If you think that Mario 64 was the main part of that argument/crack, then you obviously still do not see what I am talking about.
Here is a clue - when something looks crappy through your SonyGoggles(tm), and you feel the need to bash, don\'t. It doesn\'t belong in here. I am glad you think this looks like ****, because it reaffirms my opinion of you.
Thanks Bozco!
Eric Jacob
-
I never said it looked like ****, and I know that Mario 64 wasnt the main part, but you didnt prove any point by saying that, oh and Im not a sony fanboy nor was I ever one but since your so close minded and only see my pro sony post, thats what you think
