Title: A funny little problem, can anyone solve it?
Post by: Bossieman on September 18, 2001, 08:44:41 AM
I will prove that 3.999999999999........=4

X=3.999999999999...........

10X=39.99999999999999999..........

9X=39.999999999999..........-3.9999999999999999999

9X= 36

X= 36/9
X=4

So 3.9999999.......=4

Is there something fishy here?

It does =4 there are certain analogies you can use to reach a theological conclusion

For example..  Standing on some train tracks and a train is comming at you.. You know that if you don\'t move its going to hit you... Yet mathamaticaly speaking the train will never hit you..

its 2 feet away, then its 1 foot, then a half .5 , then .1, then .11111111 , then .011111111

But you know it will reach 0...  At which point you are squished..  So   3.99999 does = 4 once you reach the matter of threshold...

3.9999999999999... can be expressed as
lim______4 - ( 10 ^ ( -n ) )
_n->oo

The value of the limit is 4. For any writable portion of 3.9999999999999..., n would be an integer.

Okay, I think I remember now, I believe you can\'t do step 3;

9x = 39.9999999....   -  3.9999999

because the 3.99999 goes to infinity and there are special rules to handle numbers that go to infinity because they\'re not really numbers (bear with me).

Check the link: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/alochona/message/130 - what they said ;)

well yea its step three because if you think about it

the 10x is possible by just moving the decimal over one but you cant do that with the 9x - you have to times the last digit by nine which isnt possible - also if it was the last digit would be an 1 - 9x9=8\'1\' which would not make it and even subtraction

so there :P

3.9999999999...... does indeed equal 4 because once you get past the 10th 9 the resulting actual difference between 3.9999999999..... and 4 is so small that for any practical applications you should just say "Fukk it, it\'s good enough". Nobody likes a nitpicker. :D

1+1 isnt really 2.. Its 11..
See put 1 next to 1 and it makes 11!

Just like 123+456=123456

EASY!
