GameSpot has learned further details regarding the release of the PlayStation 2 40GB hard drive unit in North America. The hard drive unit, which fits into an expansion bay on the back of the PS2, is expected to arrive in North America in early 2002, and SCEA sources indicate that it could be released by the end of Q1 2002. Specific pricing for the North American hard drive unit has not been determined. In Japan, the hard drive is currently available at retail in both internal and external varieties. The external hard drive retails for 19,000 yen (about $150), while the internal hard drive, which will be the version released in North America, carries a price of 18,000 yen (about $144) in Japan.
On a related note, in speaking with GameSpot, an SCEA spokesperson reaffirmed that the PlayStation 2 Ethernet/modem adapter is still on schedule to be released in early November, as announced at this year\'s E3. The add-on will carry a retail price of $40. The Ethernet/modem adapter will allow for broadband and dial-up Internet connections, and it will give users access to services such as e-mail, instant messaging, browsing via a Netscape browser, and streaming audio and video in conjunction with the hard drive unit. These services are provided on the PS2 through SCEA\'s partnerships with such firms as America Online, Macromedia, and Real Networks. The Ethernet/modem adapter will support such games Activision\'s Tony Hawk\'s Pro Skater 3 and Sony\'s own SOCOM: US Navy Seals.
The modem and adapter are $40 too!

Any person that is privy to the inner workings of business will tell you that this move was done to wait for the HDD to lower in price...
-
hell if i have to wait a few months to get a cheaper price which is what i would have done anyway with all the stuff i have to buy for ps2 then i guess its all good
-
The Navy Seals game looks very intresting IMO....
Sony made a very wise choice putting BB/Modem together...it\'s no wonder more developers are making online games for PS2 than the Xbox.
-
hard drive = 150 US dollars? Good luck selling that when GC is 200 and X-Box is 300 which includes hdd.
40 bucks is nice, and will most likely get some good sales.

Their HDD will cost more for 2 reasons:
1) It\'s Japan. The PS2 there cost $400, while ours here costs $300. So most likely it will be cut 25%.
2) Theirs included the ethernet adapter.
so the U.S. version will be $75-100.

Thanks for the news Vivi. I was worried that I wouldn\'t be able to play Tony Hawk 3 online until next year.
-
This may be a dumb question it may not be, I\'m just making sure...
If I want to be able to play my friends online, do I just need the ethernet/modem adaptor, or do I have to get the hard drive as well? Please, be gentle... :(
-
The HDD is NOT a required device for online gaming on the PS2.
-
No, you only need the Modem/BB Adapter to play online.
Anyone know when It will be out in the UK?
-
Geez....I\'d hate to see how all this will come out to those of us that are in Australia. With the exchange rate the way it is, to play online will cost an absolute fortune! :(
-
Ill be getting that.. And the HDD when it comes along :)
I talked to a friend at SCEE..
He estimated a price of.. £50-100
OPS2M said £200(they estimated aswell.), which he said was CRAZY.. He said "If Sony charge that then that is suicide!!! £100 tops, surely?!"

I really don\'t know much about the HD could someone explain the many uses its good for besides just saving games and downloading patches and stuff off the internet.

Well.. Loadtimes.. Games can stream data onto the HDD much faster so the loadtimes are shorter..
Internet surfing, donwloading pictures (porno!!), videos, streaming videos, mp3 music, downloading mods to games ect..
Stuff like that..

Thanks ViVi, thats great info!! :D

Tony Hawk 3 doesn\'t charge monthly costs because the games are hosted off of the players\' PS2s. I hope all PS2 games are like this, but they probably won\'t be.

PS2 HDD is 40GB = $300+$150=$450
XBOX HDD is 10GB = $300
so i think that $150 is worth it

I think that if Sony were really serious about selling the HDD in mass quantities, they should consider releasing a 5GB hdd for 25 bux or less (More than enough room for a DVD to stream data onto + other features), a 10GB hdd for 40 bux or less, a 20GB for 60 bux or less, and... well you get the idea. That way the consumer can temper his desire for online content with a variety of different size and price options.
Starting June or Nov of next year, Sony should also begin including an at LEAST 2GB upgradable HDD INTO the PS2 so that future consumers aren\'t forced to buy expensive and bulky addon\'s. (Not to mention that\'s all the more oppertunity for game devs to make suped up HDD REQUIRED games)
-
I agree SonyFan. They should start the size at 10 gigs and go up from there. That would make the HDD a lot more successful.

Thats why they\'re planning to do so..
Phil Harrison of SCEE said something about it in Official PlayStation 2 Magazine UK. :D

Sure.. When I find the mag.. :)
I got a 1000 mags.. lol.. ;)
He said something like:
"Later on we\'re gonne relase smaller versions of the HDD (10-20-30GB ect.)"

I would be buying this Ethernet/modem adapter along with Tony Hawk 3 for sure!!
So this adapter will be modem and Ethernet in one? It wouln\'t be cheaper if they release a modem and a Ethernet Adapter? Why would I want a modem if I have Ethernet? Someone?

It might be cheaper for Sony, but I\'m sure they would still charge you the same price as they are now. :) I think the reason they are selling them as one unit is to make it easier for the average idiot to get online.

and its also saving SONY money. why spend twice as much when you can have it all in one and save money ?
ITS ALL ABOUT MARKETING STRATEGY!!!!!
