I was in a store in the US looking at the new SONY PS2 DVD Remote
Controller Kit. Exactly like the one seen here:
http://www.ebgames.com/ebx/categories/products/product.asp?pf_id=208449
On the outside of the box there was a message that said something like:
"If you own the newest version playstation 2 model number SCPH-30001R,
then you do not need to purchase the sony 8meg memory cartridge in order
to make this controller work. If you own a SCPH-30001 or older, then you
must purchase the memory pak."
I\'ve looked in 5 stores and I cannot find a PS2 with a model number
of SCPH-30001R, they are all SCPH-30001.
1. Has anyone seen a SCPH-30001R
2. Does anyone know the differences between a SCPH-30001R and a SCPH-30001
3. If the SCPH-30001R is not out yet, when will it be in stores.
Thanks.......Paul

R is the Racer version of the PS2. ;)
-
When you said: "R is the Racer version of the PS2", Did you think that 30001R is the GT3 Bundled version of the PS2 console. If yes, that is not the case because the GT3 Bundled PS2 console is model scph-35001.
Or maybe you were just making a joke :-|

It was a joke. :hat: ;)

alright the reason why it says "if you own the newest version PS2 model SCPH-30001R" is because it has the updated DVD Driver [v2.10] if you have the release date PS2 or older ones, you need the DVD Driver disc that is inside the remote and install the driver into your memory card inorder to use the remote. so in SCPH-30001R you dont have to waste 2.2MB of space just for the updated DVD Driver, and you can use the remote out of the box.
so the "R" probably stands for "R"emote

Thanks Bandit. Now that we know what the scph-30001R is all about:
1. Has anyone seen a scph-30001R ?
2. Are they even out yet, if not when will they be on the shelves?
3. How can I identify a 30001R without openning the box. All the units I\'ve seen in stores say 30001 on the box. Will sony pack 30001R in the old boxes that say 30001 on the outside? Or will they be in a new box that says model number 30001R.
I\'ve called SONY(800345-7669) several times with my questions. They just play dumb. One tech even told me: "there is no difference between the 30001 and 30001R", which I knew was a lie! When I asked to speak to thier supervisor, the supervisor told me: "there is not a 30001R model PS2". I asked him why then does the SONY DVD controller refer to a 30001R, he said didn\'t know!

lol. I like your style. :) Don\'t give up. Keep on bugging them until they tell you the truth. And try to make them tell you if the US PS2 is getting a price drop this year too. :)
BTW, Welcome to the forums Hawk505.

Dammit. I need that space to save games. Well I guess I\'ll have to buy a 3rd party DVD remote. Anyone know of any good ones liscenced by Sony ? (I don\'t buy anything for my PS2 unless it is liscenced. It could screw it up permanently)

WTF? Did someone actually misspell the word "WINNER?" Is that intentional? If not, my faith in our educational system is now finally gone for good.

there is no DVD remote that is officially licensed by SONY..only memory cards. 2.2mb is big for just a DVD driver but its worth it. if you get a 3rd party, you wont get your moneys worth.

1. NO, but when i do see it at work i\'ll let you guys know
2. read answer #1
3. check on top of the box of the PS2, there are 2 labels. 1 is the barcode where retailers scan and the other has 2 barcodes which i dont know what it is, serial number for the system or for SONY purposes ? anyways on the second label where it has 2 barcodes, on the top right hand corner it tells you the model number

Let me get this straight - to get at the new drivers (ver 2.01), they have to get loaded from the CD that comes with the Sony remote onto my 8mb card? This doesn\'t flash the rom inside of this hunk o\' crap? The drivers have to stay on that card the WHOLE time? How big are these Drivers? wtf, man this is not working out...The stupid remote doesn\'t even have a controller pass thru!

umm before you go berserk..the updated DVD Driver v2.10 lets you use the remote on the PS2, in other words in order to use the remote and its special features on the remote, you need to install the driver. and yes the drivers have to stay on the card. when using the DVD remote you have to have the memory which has the DVD Driver in it into the PS2..and you dont need a stupid gay ass pass thru, you can plug the infared sensor into controller port 2 and still have a regular controller in controller port 1

Would there be anyway to update the scph-30001 DVD driver to v2.10 without using the memory card. IE: Is there a replaceable ROM chip that\'s not soldered in? Or, could the unit be sent to SONY and they could update the drivers.(Althougth, the cost would probabley not be worth it)

Fits very well with PS2!
Sony knows how to design stuff ;)

Bandit - I was not going berserk, I just felt my points needed a little extra emphasis.
1) A pass through would have been nice, hell why not use one of those USB ports up front?
2) A nice piece of Flash ROM in the PS2 for cases like this when an update comes out and you don\'t need/want to monkey with extra hardware. Simply load up the CD, it flashes the "BIOS" and boom I got a nice new workable remote with great new features without having to go out and buy a $35 piece of hardware that should be only needed to save my games on.
I LIKE my PS2, don\'t get me wrong. But some times a little extra thought and effort by Sony would make me LOVE the PS2.

thats why SONY let you plug the infared into slot 2 instead 1

well you arent spending $35 just to install an updated dvd driver, you are also using it to save games and stuff. and it probably would cost more money to add a Flash ROM into the PS2, or many they thought it was unnecessary since they have the 40GB HDD coming out

The US and UK PS2\'s have a Flash ROM, and I can\'t understand why Sony don\'t use it!. One reason could be that the Flash Rom is only 1MB and the updated drivers are bigger than they expected @2.2MB

Maybe the new scph-30001r has a larger flash ROM of say 3 or 4 meg. That way SONY could fit the new DVD driver onboard....

Or they might have updated them allready so you dont need to waste 2.2MBs on the memorycard :)
I hope Sony sends me a NEW ps2 with the new drivers.. Was it the 2.10 drivers?
-
SONY most likely updated the DVD drivers

thats why you go to EB, buy the system from them with the warranty, if anything happens, return your PS2 and they give you a NEW PS2, no repairs
