Title: I\'m about to make the most important decision of my life...
Post by: lionken07 on October 03, 2001, 10:27:16 AM
I\'m about to buy my first car and I am still not sure exactly which one to get...my picks are the Honda civic, Integra Type R, Subaru WRX...as for now.  Perhaps you guys could give me some opinion.  I have around 20,000 to spend on this.

hmm go for the WRX, but if your really into sports cars, look for a used corvette stingray, with 20,000...with 15,000 you can get one in damn good condition and not many miles on the motor, that or an IROC Z camaro, in damn good condition, dont look at the newest cars, looks at the older more powerful ones. thats just my opinion, you\'ll turn a hell of alote more heads in a stingray  than a WRX :) and go from 0-60 in about 4 seconds :D

I\'d get a Subaru WRX if I had the money.  You only have 20k, so I guess its out of the question then...

For some reason I only like Japanese cars...maybe it\'s because all the people around here drive it. or perhaps it\'s the looks of it.  Oh and for me I only have like 10,000 my mom will give me the other 10,000 only if I buy a new car, so I if I buy a used one I will have to get something that\'s 10,000 in USD.

20k There is quite a few to choose from..  I was just going over this with my friend..

Check road and driver, they just had a review of cars under 25k

And suprising the Mazda MP3 got really really good review for handling..

My sugestion, get an Mitsubishi Lancer, for about 16k loaded and spend the other 4 grand on mods..  A turbo would cost about 1k, and give you a lot of power..  Its not AWD, but its a very tune-able car and its looks really nice...

Read up on, go to the book stores and get some car mags.  Educate yourself and make a wise buy!

I like RWD too but it\'s hard to find a RWD and enjoy the look of it.  I will probably soup it up but not any time soon.

Guess you know which one I\'d pick.

But also look at resale value at N.A.D.A. (http://www.nada.com) for models you are interested in and how much they depreciate after 1 year.

I know next to nothing about the Lancer except that it\'s price range and performance match up exactly to the Honda Civic.  I\'ve never owned a Mitsubishi, but I have nothing but good things to say about Honda.  After about 1.5 years I got -+$500 what I paid for it.  My family\'s owned 3 and none with any problems whatsoever.

I love my Subaru and it performs great.  2 months and going so far no problems.

I would suggest none of the above.  It\'s a car trend, ever since "The Fast and the Furious" its become a mainstream thing to pimp-out these moderate cars.  In about 5 years youll be looking at your civic with tinted-windows, a flowmaster exhaust pipe, chrome wheels, ground effects, and (A) wonder where the hell all your money went and (B) realize how gay it really looks.  Be original man, with that money you can do a heck of a lot.

Anyone want to know what I would do?

Well too bad, I\'m going to tell you..

Buy an 8,000 used car and invest the 12 G\'s....  In 3 years you will way more than double your money (Probably more like triple or more depending on what you invest in)

Cars are the only major purchase in life that will never be worth what it was when you bought it.

I\'m not saying it\'s not great to have a nice car, but my word I wish I had 12 grand to spend 10 years ago on the stock market.  I could retire...

BTW I\'m so close to 1700 I can smell it.   Ooohh, like strawberries.

FU8K the fast and the furiouse, i hate that movie with the biggest passion in the fu*king world, that movie gave all the poser the idea," hey guys lets put stickers all over our cars so we could have rice wagons also" uuuggghhhhhh posers, like i friggin said in the lets show off our car thread, you dont need all the stupid stuickers and nitrouse to have a fast car man, just clean engien mods, you dont even need to soup it up if you dont want, im sorry but what you posted pisssed me off dude, i sure as FU8K am not biting off that movie, i didnt even watch it for the love of god, yep never seen it im to good for ricer movies.

Listen lionken07, forget all the trash talking up in here.  Don\'t think of this as the most important decision of your life.  You will have other cars.  Go drive the ones you are interested in, pick the ones you like then check out reviews and resale values on-line.

Chances are no matter what you get, you\'ll be ready for something new in a few years.  Your first car will show you what to look for next time good and bad.

I agree with Videoholic. If you need to borrow that much money for a car, forget it and buy something small and inexpensive with good gas mileage. Invest the rest wisely, get rich, and then you\'ll REALLY be able to get a badass ride. I\'d love a souped car, but I won\'t do it until I can easily afford to.

Hey man im not bashing you at all or promoting "The Fast and the Furious".  I hated that movie the first time I saw the promo.  Im just suggesting to lionken that he should considered the long term of a car since he is putting a lot of money into.  Im sorry to offend you, if you had a pimped-out car before as you say "all these posers starting putting stickers on their cars" good for you man.

Sound advice. I would listen. If I had $20,000 I\'d just buy a ****box with wheels and invest the rest (though I must admit I don\'t have nearly the passion for road cars as many of the guys here). Unfortunately, at this point in time I don\'t even have $2000! 20 grand is a lot of money, and you\'re a young guy - use it wisely.

The Fast and The Furious was the best movie ever. And by best movie ever I mean it was a piece of fly infested bloody camel sh!t. :D Though it did provide me with a greater sense of amusement at those rice rockets with their \'go-faster\' stripes and mufflers. I think I shall stick a \'POWERED BY MUGEN\' sticker on my bicycle. :)

Damnit man. What the hell? Everytime I think I have a brilliant response for a thread and come back to post, you have stolen my idea. I was going to say... MOPED and you think you have the right to steal my idea?

You suck...

Hell, I\'ll go one step further and say you should just invest in a good bicycle! Or better still, a nice pair of jogging shoes! NOW IS THE TIME TO CONSERVE AND INVEST.

Btw, I have a lovely 93 Sonata I can let go cheap, 804-323-3315:D

Yeah that sounds like the best thing you should do. It makes no sense to spend 20g\'s on some crappy sabaru. invest the money and in 2 years triple it and go out and buy a real car like a lexus or  mercades.

GE was at 31 last week.  It was already back to 38 yesterday.  I would buy 300-400 shares of this and in two years you will have over 30000.

Yeah, get a 20,000 car.

Then in 3 years, you will have a 7,000 car.

Where as I will still have an already depreciated 5,000 car and with my 12,000 invested I will have over 20000 back in my account...

Wait a second, does that mean my car was free?  Um, yep!

I wish I had someone yelling at me when I was a kid not to waste money.  I could be rich.  Oh wait, I am rich.  Um, I could be richer!!!

I agree with Videoholic to a point..  You should invest some money.. I did, I also lost half of it so far and its giving me an ulcer..

But hey you only live once..  I bought a fat exspensive car, and you know what I love it..  If you look at in a different perspective then its all good..

My car is a hobbie and my way to work..  So yes, like any other hobbie I spend lots of money on it.  If I was only out to get a car to goto work with then, I would have bought one of those hybrid cars, that get like 80miles to the gallon..

Its like anything else, what you spend your money on is your decision, right or wrong to someone else, its right for you...

As long as your responsible and happy thats all that should matter.

Like I thought about buying another car, a Honda S2000 on top of the Audi I own.  But then I realized I don\'t have a garage, so now Im trying to buy a house..  ITs all about whats important to you, so now my new investment and hobbie is going to be a house.  Well hopefully, hopefully in 6 monhts I still have a job..

Have fun with the house Kirath.  Great, fun unvestment.

Nothing worse than wasting money on rent.  My house has appreciated 45% in only 3 years.  I\'m probably going to sell next year and get a bigger house.  Yummy.

Get a WRX if you can afford the monthly payments and insurance rate.

AWD, excellent handling car, ABS(four pot caliper front disk brakes - you WILL need that), turbo, perfect as a daily driver, perfect for autocrossing or rallying on weekends, you will not get stuck in the snow, handles better than fwd and rwd in the rain....all under $25,000!

But you\'re young, you can\'t afford the insurance...unless you\'re making a lot of money.

OR you can bu a used Impreza RS.

what is it about the investin\' thing?>? first of all I don\'t buy a car so that I can sell it to make money, secondly, I won\'t get the 10,000 if I dont\' buy a new car...so the used ones will not be my option.
