Title: Price cut creates massive sales boost in Europe.
Post by: IronFist on October 04, 2001, 05:33:54 AM
Friday\'s PlayStation 2 price cut has more than tripled sales of the Sony console. The new price of £199 led to PS2 clocking up its biggest week of sales since it was launched last November.

There is no reason, PS2 is still selling strong here, besides remember when the PS2 launched and no one could get one so the DCs sales went way up? Sony figures that will happen when the GC and X-Box comes out so why lower the price and lose all that potential money. I\'m guessing eary next year.

DC sales went up, moreso because it was cheaper than the PS2, not just because people couldnt get one

The price of the DC had been 150 or however much it was at the time of the ps2 launch for a while. These were people who had saved up the money for a PS2 were disapointed because they couldnt get one and got the next best thing.

WRONG ! i hate it when people talk about the price drop. its all about MARKETING STRATEGY..i can tell if you were in SONYs shoes, you\'ll be out of business before Xbox or GC hits the market..better yet, instead of DC being dead, the PS2 would. THERE IS NO PRICE DROP. SONY feels confident that it will compete against Xbox and GC. look at the games coming out in the next few months or so. and if you do the price currency exchange rate, ALL 3 countries come out about the same price for the PS2...give or take a couple of dollars ie UKs price for the PS2 is $291 USD...USs price for the PS2 is $299 USD. so why would SONY make the US PS2 even lower in price ? and when theres a shortage with the XBOX and GC who will be there to take all the sales ? the PS2! since SONY has been stocking up on them. there will be abundance of them come xmas holiday

xbox launch quantity - 300,000
gamecube launch quantity - 600,000-800,000

But I don\'t agree with it. Yes, keeping the price at $300 won\'t hurt Sony, especially with all the great games and the other system\'s shortages (if there is shortages for the other systems) accure, and there would be plenty of PS2s  to in essences to feed off this \'shortage\'. However, not lowering the price won\'t help either. Afterall, while it will get gamers who must have a system now if there is a shortage come November, it will not convice the bulk of gamers who can just wait for more systems to come out. Afterall, back to the DC situation, DC sales, despite the obvious price advantage since, most gamers were waiting for more PS2 to become readily availble. Now, I know Sega had other problems (like image problems), but still, they were the only competition for the PS2 at the time, they had plenty of systems to make up the shortages of the PS2, better price then the PS2, and even launched early. Still, did not help its sales much during the shortage era of the PS2. If the Xbox or GC proves to be as successful as they appear they will be (especailly the Xbox with all the sellouts of pre-orders bundles of all things they have) for Sony not dropping the price, it won\'t kill them, but won\'t help them either.

Now, obviously, the DC situation proves, price isn\'t everything. Its about image, game support, and advertising to succeed in this business. Most of which, the PS2 doesn\'t have a problem with (except maybe the image problem due to the launch problems, but given 17 million shipped, didn\'t hurt much). So, a price cut will only help PS2 situation, and with the expected onslaught og the GC and Xbox (neither of which have the same problems as Sega), it could mean the difference between doing just well, and dominating.

how much lower can the PS2 get ? like i said and i\'ll say it again, ALL 3 countries price for the PS2 are relatively the same give or take a couple of dollars. as i stated before UKs PS2 is about $291USD, USs price is $299USD and JPNs price is about $290-295USD..so if SONY was to drop the price of the PS2, what would they drop it at ? $250 ? that means they are going to have to drop the UKs and JPNs even MORE just to match the USs price. i work for EB and i have seen customers [foreigners mostly Europeans from the UK] come into my store and buy a PS2 even though the US is NTSC and the UK is PAL. i have noticed that less and less Euros have stopped by to pick up the PS2. and since i work for EB, SONY reps come into the store EVERY week or two to setup promotional stuff at windows or shelves. and i bug them EVERYTIME i see them, "ARE YOU SURE YOU ARENT DROPPING THE PS2 PRICE" their response "WE HAVE NO INTENTIONS TO DROP IT". it just makes me mad on how stupid people can be when it comes to money/marketing strategy. like i said before, if you were running SONY, the PS2 would be dead instead of the DC.

"o yea, drop the price of the PS2, we\'ll bring more sales"
"but the PS2 is selling quite alot as it is at the $300 price tag"
"drop the price, come holiday season we\'ll make more"
"but we can make more at the $300 tag then the $250 tag during the holiday"

hmm..what shall we do ?
to you probably, lower the price and sell more systems but less profit

to me, keep it as it is, sell more systems and make more profit

just because the JPNs and Euros got a price drop doesnt mean we are going to follow.

There is no reason to drop the price, PS2 is selling great. When the sales start to fall behind the competition Sony will do something.

How the hell is dropping the price anymore for the US going to "kill the PS2"? Now, I know, as a business, why keeping it at $300 for now is a good/great choice (maximize profits [as you have siad] especially now due to the downturn). And given that PS2 sales are still great, dropping the price, or even announcing a pending price drop is a bad idea. But Sony annouced that they are making a profit off their gaming sector. Second, price of making the system is going down. So, they could now afford to drop the price more if need be. Besides, its the games that make Sony the money, not the system (which given the success of GT3 and other games, more money to Sony). So, they last as you say, until sales slow. Now, I didn\'t say before the GC and Xbox launch. But both these systems, even with the expected \'delays\' will affect the PS2 since, they are the real competition for Sony since the DC (which given Sega\'s financial record, wasn\'t really \'big enough\' to truely compete with the PS2. Which the GC and Xbox are expected to be). And if Sony loses market share, they will lose sales, and revenue in the long run. Afterall, MS and GC will go after Sony. And if MS succeeds in telling the consumers why spending $300 on their system is better and should wait for their system (like what the majority of gamers did when the PS2 hit), PS2 will be hurt (now, I don\'t find this likely, but spending 500 million on advertising. Will turn heads).

Now, I didn\'t say they should drop the price at or during Xbox/GC launch. Afterall, if it sells, great. More profit to Sony. And yes, PS2 does have great games that they could live with when they come, and the shortage, hey, if it becomes an issue, then Sony really does, have nothing to worry about if they don\'t drop the price. However, expect MS to make it an issue, and in the long run, MS takes away market share of from Sony, that itself will hurt Sony in the long run. The point of market competition.
