There is a great article over at the Gaming Age forums written by "Ned Flanders God of Men" discussing Nintendo\'s possible Achilles Heel (or Achilles heels). I think it\'s a great read that really puts this console war into perspective. I advise all of you to read and, and then post your opinions/impressions of it and if you think Nintendo has what it takes to survive.
http://pub69.ezboard.com/fgamingageforumsfrm10.showMessage?topicID=12312.topic
Here are a couple good quotes from it:
Nintendo, I don\'t understand how me and millions of other people like me can have made you the multibillion dollar company that you are and you turn your backs on us just because the younger Pokemon crowd is making you more cash nowadays.
WORD.
...this is NOT the PS2 (Tekken Tag/Madden/SSX launch) against a spottily purchased/supported DC (RIP), this is against 2 MAJOR competitors, one who is spending out the ass (although it is looking to have a ho-hum launch lineup as well) and the other is virtually dug in to the market and buliding momentum.

I don\'t see why everyone is so pissed at nintendo for not beig mature. I mean you had sega, and sony fighting for the same audience. And sony won that battle. So nintendo chose to go after a crowd that nobody was catering to and they prove you can be successful. If nintendo puts out a couple of mature titles to go with what they got that would be fine for me. They make great games. And now that xbox and sony will do battle for the same crowd why should nintendo jump in.
Ppl need quit all this *****ing you got sony and now xbox too feel all your teenage needs.

yeah but wouldnt it be great if \'luigis mansion\' was a bit more serious...i mean the ghost houses in super mario world had cool music and although they were 2d, they were a bit freaky going through..and in mario 64 the little carnival music was freaky and got stuck in your head...it just didnt have the comical theme that luigis mansion has...
wouldnt it be cool if the new zelda looked a tad more serious?
atleast like the artwork from ocarina of time or the gameboy color ? or if link didnt look like a powerpuff girl ?

So you agree with Ned Flanders God of Men? That is what he was saying. Nintendo has lost the majority of the people who grew up with them.

yeah well...same thing happened to me when the n64 came out and silly me gives them the benefit of the doubt this time around, and they let me down again with the gamecube...so to hell with nintendo.

I don\'t know why Nintendo can\'t cater to both 10 year olds and 18 year olds... would it hurt their image so bad?

ehhe, he\'ll kill for for saying this
but mm is a *cough* little past 18

Like any other smart business Nintendo took a look at the competition it faced and had to decide where its strengths were, which group(s) Nintendo gaming systems appeal to and the reasons why those customers might choose GC over the rest. At some point during development of GC games it became clear, as nice as their games looked, they would not outshine in a big way the graphics of the only other serious rival system, the PS2. With finite first party resources the decision to focus those resources solely on content aimed at the younger crowd was set, knowing the core of their older loyal fan base would purchase the GC regardless. Leaving open for third parties the tempting prospect of a mature void left to fill. My guess is with certain restrictions, very limited blood, gore and sex appeal. In other words, nothing that might upset the vast majority of those they expect to be purchasing their latest console, Mom and Dad.
That\'s my take anyway. It was a practical decision dictated by market forces, gauged by what helped them to be number one in the past and where most of their revenue is coming from now. Time will tell if leaving behind a segment of loyal fans was the best move. Keep in mind, even without the babyish version of Zelda, odds are most of their older fan base had moved on anyway.
Oh man, that was more than needed to be said. One day I\'ll learn to get to the point. You know, the way the infamous chimp and his human have the knack for doing it.

mm is 25 years old... AGGGHHHHH NOOOOOO *is eaten by Clyde*
Clyde: Silly human.
Kay... You know, if you think about it, Nintendo has NEVER been one to make many Mature games, the only difference is that SNES and NES had third parties to do that, N64 did not. N64 wasn\'t that great a system, but it did have some gems nonetheless.
Also remember, a lot of "mature" games really suck.

Nintendo has always been kiddy. They where never too mature. So ppl *****ing about nintendo abandon me the mature gamer needs to look back on the nintendo\'s history. The times change and ppl wanted more violent games.
-
They never had too many exciting games IMO. That\'s why I chose PS2 because they had games that I found fun. GT3, MGS2, Syphon Filter (PSX), TimeSplitters, DMC, FF series and the list goes on.

I didn\'t grow up with Nintendo, so I don\'t care. (yes, I\'m a little older than 18 too) Nintendo wants to market predominantly to kiddies and parents, ok fine. That just means I won\'t be buying one. Doesn\'t hurt me because I have the PS2 and maybe the XBox. I\'m not sure why so many get worked up over this. I can only imagine it\'s because some people have good memories of the Nintendo name brand from their youth.
I think Heretic\'s analysis is correct.

Exactly. If I could go back to those days, I wouldn\'t hesitate for a second. Not only for the awsome NES and SNES, but for the Genesis too.

Nintendo ain\'t nothing but sell-outs with those kiddy games. I mean after the spaceworld conference they bascialy told older gamers that our main focus are kids. So forget them I like sony better anyway.:thepimp:

Compare nintendo to sega back in the day. And see just how kiddie nintendo was they where just the more popular brand. Name all these quote on quote mature adult titles nintendo had.
They had a library of kidde games on nes and a library of kiddie games on snes. Jeesh mortal kombat was the most popular game at it\'s time and nintendo would not even allow the blood in the game and they change all the finishing moves in the game. How kiddie was that.
If you go and look back on nintendo and the library of games they had out you would see nothing has changed with nintendo the times have just changed.
-
While we are at it crying that Nintendo is not mature, lets go and storm Disney for not catering to the older audience..
Get over it people.
Sheesh.
By the way - as for the "sellout" remark, what do you think EVERY company is?

disney animations have beautifully drawn characters and backgrounds and have oscar winning soundtracks....they stick to classic fairy tale stories and portray them in an amazing way...their characters may not be as mature as \'solid snake\' but they sure as hell aint gay looking like Link from the new zelda and they definitely do not sound as gay as luigi or mario....
disney has ALWAYS done things for kiddies and have been respected for that for years....nintendo once catered for all audiences (NES and SNES days) , and ever since the n64 they changed their minds and thats why people are pist at them.
-
I don\'t understand how Nintendo "soldout", they were always kiddy. The only difference is that the people who grew up with Nintendo expect Nintendo to throw away their market which is pulling them in more than enough money and move to one that might tarnish their family friendly reputation. The thing is alot of you are so selfish that you want to deprive todays gaming youths of that same magic Nintendo gave you back during the SNES days.

You think nintendo was mature back in nes and snes days? Games where not as violent as they are now. They had libraries and libraries of kiddie games. I could list all the titles on snes and nes for you if you want me two.
The playing field was not as big. The only thing nintendo has slacked off is that they had no real fighting games on n64. Sega was the system that was so mature. Nintendo always chose the disney rout.
-
Saying the Gamecube is a kiddy system because of Nintendo is like saying all movies are for children because of Disney. Anyone hear of third parties?
And excuse me as I bury my boot into the side of the rotting horse, but just because a kid likes a game doesn\'t mean an adult wouldn\'t like it either.

EDIT! - I got a bad feeling about what I said before I edited this..... because of flamming...
I don\'t enjoy Nintendo\'s idea on the non-mature games... But that doesn\'t mean they will be fun.... I mean look at ICO.... That game is so easy.... A toddler could beat it..... Of course the puzzles might be confusing... But I LOVE that game! I really enjoyed it.... And I will enjoy it again tomorrow (I\'m beating it again.):D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D Too many faces?
