Title: Is it True ? Project Gotham close to 40 million pps ??
Post by: BizioEE on October 12, 2001, 12:59:39 PM
Devs said 400,000 on screen for the city and 16000 per car.

There can be 16 cars on screen in split screen.

16 x 16000 = 256000
256000 + 400,000 = 656,000

He said the game is locked at 60 fps.

656,000 x 60 = 39,360,000

So close to 40 million pps.

Is it True ? ...I found it on http://forums.teamxbox.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=29021&perpage=15&pagenumber=1

Then Im veeeery disappointed if that’s 40million polygons graphics..

GT3 pushes like 8-9million and it looks better IMO..

yeah, got to agree: if PGR really uses over 30 million polygons per second, it really looks disappointing compared to GT3, which I think utilizes just around 10.

Something bugs me about the math in that forum though:
he sais, the dev said 16\'000 polygons per car and 400\'000 for the surroundings. Nothing about 40 million polygons per second there, right?

Now, if you do the math accoardingly, you have:

8 cars on screen x 16\'000 polygons =  128\'000 polygons
128\'000 polygons + 400\'000 for the surroundings = 528000 polygons.

528000 polygons x 60 frames per second = 31\'680\'000 pps.

So, I get just over 31 million and not 40, as stated in the forums by one of the members. He thinks, that in splitscreen, there is no drawbacks in the graphics area, so there would be theoretically 16 cars on screen at once. I find this very unlikely... as a dev, I would rather use full power for single player and draw back graphics for splitscreen mode. GT3 does so, Ridge Racer V.. all the racing games I know do this. It\'s just logical. Just thought I\'d point that out, since there\'s quite a big difference between 31 and 40 million.

Anyway, like FastSon already pointed out: very disappointing graphics if this is true. I really would expect more from 10 times more polygons then seen in the movies and screens.

Who, wha, IronFist?

Edit: oh, you already fixed it. ;)

I agree with Fastson too.  I just saw the latest movie, and if that\'s even 30 mpps, I\'m disappointed.

And I dont believe all those polygons are being used at once... More polygons are being rendered when the cars are damaged, am I correct?

I admit it doesn\'t look like 31mpps at all... But for those of you saying GT3 looks better, wait for Nov. 15th, please... :)

Not really Nu Gundam, unless when a car is hit more parts are added to the car. ;)  It just moves the polygons around for the most part.

And I agree, this game looks better graphically than GT3 IMO.  I want to see it on a TV instead of just in a movie.

I downloaded that movie of the F-50 and it does look very impressive (althought the overall quality of the ASF file isn\'t all that good). The reflections are good, but I wouldn\'t say better at this point than GT3, since the cars in GT3 reflect everything (from cars to trees), so I\'d say they\'re about equal in those terms. But I will hold back further assumptions until I see better movies or at least until the game is out. :)

on second thought though.. what bugs me graphically about Gt3 is that you have to wash your car every race again to see those lovely reflections on the cars.... and the colours... I just don\'t find them as good as.. well, the colours I\'ve seen in PG. This is only with the normal races though.. I think the Rally graphics in GT3 or the wet stages are just as impressing as the stuff I\'ve seen in PG. Any thoughts on this?

You\'re not the only one. I think PG looks awesome, but 40mpps awesome, I don\'t think so.
