I\'m gradually getting better, I learned todays rock is nothing compared to 80\'s like rock. Basically almost anyone can pick up a guitar and be in a hard rock group today.
-
Hi,
I have been playing for about twenty years or so. It seams that a lot of songs out there are three or four chords. It\'s all how it\'s put together. Keep practicing cause there is nothing better than playing in a band!

I\'m a bass player myself. We always seem to be in the minority for some reason. Nobody wants to play bass (Well, except for truly cool people..):smokin:

-
screw that acoustic stuff man. full on nasty ass distortion ala AC/DC for me.
-
i like acoustic and electric but its the electric that keeps me coming back. I love cranking up my amp and jammin to some AC/DC
-
Don\'t bother with most of the 80\'s rock, at least not that idiotic metal scale cranking that used to be popular back then. Of course there were always individual musicians who put out records that were worthwhile, and I would say AC/DC was one of them. My favorite guitar player Stevie Ray Vaughan recorded almost all his records in the 80\'s, so you can\'t write off the whole decade. On the other hand, the majority of the music released now is crap as well. I think it\'s safe to say that the majority of music purchased by many people is crap, no matter what time period you\'re looking at.
It\'s good to have guitars of many different types so that you can pick up the right one to learn whatever type of song you want to play. You should have an electric, a 6-string steel stringed acoustic, a 12-string, a nylon stringed classical guitar, and maybe a few other oddballs thrown in.
If you all want to hear some real guitar playing, then buy records from these people:
Leo Kottke
Doc Watson
George Benson
Mahavishnu Orchestra (featuring John McLaughlin)
Buckethead and/or Praxis
Captain Beyond (featuring Rhino)
The Allman Brothers

I know there are a lot of Frank fanatics in the world, and I truly respect them. I think Frank was a brilliant musician and composer, and he had a fantastic ear for music. He was a perfectionist, and very persistent in making his recordings reach a really high quality level. In my opinion however, he was not a great guitar player. Certainly very good, but not great. He did work with a lot of great guitar players, as everyone knows. Sorry, that\'s just how I feel man.

I got a guitar last year and I learned the main chords rather quickly. My main problem is holding the strings down on the frets hard enough consistently without touching the neighboring strings.
I need to play more. My son loves it when I strum. I don\'t think he realizes how bad I suck. He strums too. Very delicate sound when he does it.

Videoholic: If it\'s an electric guitar you can sometimes switch to lighter gauge strings to give your fingers a break. Of course they often put very light strings on new guitars anyway so there may be nowhere to go with it. I use rather heavy gauge strings myself. Steel stringed acoustic guitars are sometimes build for a specific amount of string pressure, so making big changes in the string gauge can have undesirable effects on the neck. It usually doesn\'t matter as much with electrics.
If it\'s a nylon stringed classical guitar, they usually build them with very high action anyway, so there\'s not much you can do. Make sure you\'re using the tips of your fingers when fretting, and the edge of your finger when forming barre chords and such. That works better and it\'s safer on your hands than using the fleshy part of the finger like where your fingerprint is. If the action is impossibly high, you can have it lowered, but that can result in buzzing if you\'re not careful. It\'s always a balancing act to set up a guitar properly.
