Title: Who here has played Virua Fighter 4? (I want impressions)
Post by: IronFist on October 17, 2001, 01:41:11 PM
The last VF game I played was VF1 back in the day.  I only played it a few times before I became a Tekken addict.  For all my 3d fighting game needs, Tekken was the answer. :)  Now that VF4 is coming to the PS2, I would be crazy not to get it.  I can\'t wait to learn a whole new fighting game with all new moves, characters, and fighting styles.  So I have a few questions.

1. How does the Virtua Fighter series compare to the Tekken series (I want an honest answer from only those who are good at both).  I love Tekken, but I can\'t compare it to VF because I was never a VF player.

2. How is the VF combo system?  Is it a lot like Tekkens?  Or is it more like DOA2\'s?

3. How much are walls involved in VF4?  Can you do some crazy wall combos that you normally couldn\'t do away from a wall?

4. Why the heck is it called Virtua Fighter?  Is Virtua even a word?!  Shouldn\'t it be called Virtual Fighter?

5.  From what I understand, the controls are very similar to DOA\'s.  Is this true?

6.  Does the VF series have a storyline?  Is it good? ;)

7.  Are there any big differences between Tekken and VF that I should know about? (Other than ring outs.  I am one of the few Tekken players that love fighting games with ring outs.  IMO, ring outs make the game funner).

Feel free to add anything you want to say about VF4.  Is it really the best fighting game in your opinion?  Tell us why. :)

Thanks for your replies.  Hopefully this can become the official VF4 thread where we talk about everything VF4.

I HAVE !!!

I played the beta test version during the summer. Here are my are my answers to your questions Ironfist:

1. How does the Virtua Fighter series compare to the Tekken series (I want an honest answer from only those who are good at both). I love Tekken, but I can\'t compare it to VF because I was never a VF player. I\'ve played some VF2 on my friends Saturn, it was pretty good. It was fun. Compared to Tekken I would say there pretty much even. Tekken is fast and addicting at times, and so is VF. VF4 is also very very fun. I really injoyed playing in the Arcade against my friends.

2. How is the VF combo system? Is it a lot like Tekkens? Or is it more like DOA2\'s?

VF\'S combo system is alot like DOA\'s fight (or should I say DOA\'\'s is alot like VF\'s). Mainly punch, punch, kick. In my opinion it\'s not as good as Tekken\'s.

3. How much are walls involved in VF4? Can you do some crazy wall combos that you normally couldn\'t do away from a wall?
Yeah, the walls do affect the matches a bit. Doing combos against a wall will cause a juggle(like T4) it\'s easy to get out, if you know what you\'re doing.

4. Why the heck is it called Virtua Fighter? Is Virtua even a word?! Shouldn\'t it be called Virtual Fighter?
I guess SEGA decided to call there Fighter Virtua Fighter because it was the first 3D(virtual) fighting game. Another reason may be because it was part of the whole Virtua series, Virtua Racing, Vitual On, Virtua Tennis.

5. From what I understand, the controls are very similar to DOA\'s. Is this true?
Yes,the control is similar to DOA.

6. Does the VF series have a storyline? Is it good?    Well, I\'m sure there is some kind of story. I just don\'t know what it is. I\'m sure there is a tournament of some kind and the winner get a prize.

7. Are there any big differences between Tekken and VF that I should know about? (Other than ring outs. I am one of the few Tekken players that love fighting games with ring outs. IMO, ring outs make the game funner).  The differences between VF and Tekken are pretty obvious. They have different control schemes, which well make them feel different. VF has a steaper learning curve in my opinion than Tekken. I found my self having a more difficult time learning the moves in VF than in Tekken.

I would like to add that I was very excited when I was playing VF4. It was alot of fun and I\'m looking forward to the PS2 version release. The graphic IMO are some of the best I have ever seen in a videogame.I would also like to add that I\'m glad it\'s more like VF2 than VF3. VF2 was better:D

You know how you said that the control scheme is similar to DOA2\'s, well the other way around, but is VF4 more complex?
DOA2 is just a button masher really.

I don\'t really remember juggling on walls. Maybe because I only played up to part 2.. The cheapest way to win was ringing out the comp every time. :)

Really thouh IrnoFist, now that it is on PS2, you won\'t necessarily like it, I say rent it and feel the power, it may be a tad to deep and different at first, but look around ont he net and get some pointers, play with friends, preferably those that know VF, and have fun.

VF started it all and every new one that comes  out gets me crazy, the extent of my playing at my arcade has only been matched by Street Fighter 3:3rd strike.

It is funny though, it used to be that Tekken games got all the play in the 3d fightting games, the PS2 announement seems to have sparked interest in VF and now it is the popular cat in town, Tekken 4 hardly gets played anymore, besides the Tekken freaks.

Why bother renting it?  From what I have heard, VF4 is the deepest 3D fighter out there.  I\'m up for the challenge of learning the all new system.  VF4 is one of my most anticipated games of next year.  I have played VF1, and I loved it.  I think I played VF2 also (It was a long time ago, so I can\'t really remember), and I loved that too.

Tekken 4 was a disappointment to a lot of people.  Even some of the Tekken freaks are moving on to other things until Namco pulls itself together.  It was way too rushed and wasn\'t polished nearly enough.  I\'m still getting it for the PS2 (of course:)), but I\'m looking forward to VF4 more.

IMO, out of all the games Sega is making, VF4 is the best one.  I\'m glad I have a PS2. :)

so am i.

You need an arcade stick, many of Akir\'a moves are impossible without it.

There is a move where you have to basically flick one of the buttons while hitting and holding another, quite deadly, and near impossible on a pad.

He he he, you don\'t know what I\'m capable of doing with the controller.  Tekken may not be as deep, but it has some pretty crazy moves too. :)

Rolling Death Cradle multi throw:

f,N,d,d/f+1+4,
(pause),
2,1,1+2+3,
(pause),
1+3,3+4,2+4,1+2,1+2+3

That last part has to be done in less than 2 seconds.  It may sound easy, but it\'s not without practice (and some wierd hand positions. ;))

BTW, that translates to:

f,d,d/f, Square+Circle,
(pause),
Triangle, Square, Square+Triangle+X,
(pause),
Square+X, X+Circle, Triangle+Circle, Square+Triangle, Square+Triangle+X (very quickly)

I think I can handle VF4. ;)
