I have windows ME (bad Idea), is XP better??????? ME has some major problems...........are they fixed in XP?

It\'s graphically nice and if you have a home computer with numerous people using it, it\'s nice because you can switch between users real easily and each have all of their own stuff.
Other than that, well I don\'t know about the internals of it and how stable it is. I\'ve never had stability problems with ME so not sure if this is better or not.

my version of ME has stability problems....It came with my Gateway computer.........crashes.......lockups....you name it!

Avoid ME like you avoid the plague.
If 98 SE works for you, there is no point in changing it. It takes MS a couple of years to get most of the bugs out, and that\'s where 98 is now.
XP is good, but it has some really bad points, too. Security is a big issue in XP. Windows XP\'s new support of the full raw socket application programming Interface (API) which gives any user full access to the computer. Problem is, the home version of XP runs all programs as "administrator" level programs (like root in unix), so there is no security if you download a trojan or virus.
If you are worried about XP security, spyware, your network security, or even your HDD\'s physical status, goto the Gibson Research Corporation (http://www.grc.com), and read up on the stuff, and try his network security tests. He writes everything in assembler, and spends his time learing about direct i/o with modern systems and networks.

my ME runs good, never any problems, but my comp has problems of its own:rpissed:

It\'s good for me, it\'s OK graphically not in the same leaque as Aqua but it\'s a pleasant change and it\'s skinning ability is good and has potential.
It\'s stable, as Win2k and NT, and a heck of a lot more stable than 9x/ME. Since it\'s based on the NT kernel and uses the NTFS file system instad of Fat 32.
Switching users is a lot easier now, and the remote desktop is my favourite thing in it.
Win2k will probly be more than enough for you, XP only offers a more userfriendly interface and more wizards. But it\'s basically just an updated Win2k.
The only thing that get\'s me is the Windows Product Activasion crap that they have going.
Otherwise it\'s pretty good, not a very drastic change (not like Apple has done, from the foundation (going to the Mach.3 (UNIX) kernel, to the new GUI Aqua). but still good.

I have been runnin XP for the last week and a half. And I must say that I am impressed. It runs really good. Almost better then my 2000 machine and my NT machine.
But this is the kicker. It is hungry, very hungry, I had to upgrade my machine from an AMD-400 128mb of ram to an Athalon 900 with 256mb of ram in order to run it properly!
Thats the only kicker, but with that system it runs awesome..
Just gotta get the dual boot going with Linux on there and I will be golden!

Functionally, I\'m sure it\'s an improvement over all its crappy older FAT file system versions of windows. But there are some things you better consider before you install it:
- Version - You can\'t control which version you run, b/c you\'re on a subscription based update system. So if the latest Service Pack ruins your HDD performance, much like Win2k SP 2 does, your S. O. L.
- Product Activation - If you do any networking or configuring of your own machine, keep your phone handy b/c you\'re going to be calling Microsoft and explaining what you\'re doing and why you should be allowed to work on your own machine. And be prepared to be on hold...A LOT.
- Software Support - Microsoft is dropping support for 3rd party media software such as Javascript and maybe RealPlayer.
So, no, I won\'t be getting XP.

Thats why you hack and don\'t have to worry about stuff like that. Its my machine, it has to abide by MY license. IF ms does not like that then they should have not sold me the software!
-
im running XP Pro - full version - right now and its great
its stable so far and only one program i have didnt work properly on it - so far so good
gets bad then ill just have to go back to Win 2kpro - no biggie :p

Actually they didn\'t sell you the software - only a license to use it... :)
