There’s an Xbox that’s broken and it isn’t in any living room in America yet. The Xbox demo unit at a nearby Toys R Us store could not give consumers a taste of the new Microsoft console because of severe loading problems. The Xbox unit had no disc inside and displayed a menu screen to access the hard drive and CD player. But customers who tried to navigate through menus could do little else but wait while the machine tried to load the next menu. The audio that accompanied the menu screen transition skipped severely as well. After a three minute wait, the Xbox reached the next screen but continued to have load problems. Multiple resets also failed to resolve the problem. Soon after, a screen appeared that said the Xbox needed customer service repair. The screen provided a list of customer service phone numbers to contact.
Several Toys R Us employees did not know what went wrong with the Xbox demo unit that now carried a “Out of Order” sign. The store received their unit on Tuesday. The in-store demo units are believed to be actual finalized hardware that consumers will see at launch.

GA has received several reports on problems with in-store Xbox units.
An Xbox unit in the Germantown, MD Target store is reported to have "freezing" problems that requires employees to open the kiosk every 75 minutes to reset the console.
An Xbox unit in Software Etc. store in Souix Falls, SD was reported to skip, freeze, and have audio problems.
An Xbox unit at a Babbages store in Mobile, AL was reported to have similar problems.
A Babbages employee at the Dearborn, MI store reports that their Xbox unit does not function.
"Out of five stores that have playable demos within a ten mile area, only two have working units," says the employee.
Microsoft recently delayed the Xbox launch and will ship an unspecified number of units on November 15th. It’s unclear whether load problems were a source for delay. A Microsoft representative was contacted for the story but did not reply at press time.
We’ll have more as it develops, here at GA.
It seems as though fastson\'s "XBOX has the same launch problems as PS2!?" (http://194.47.16.181/forums/showthread.php?threadid=14812) thread had more truth to it than some of you wanted to believe.

Hehehe... that looks the same as the one at my mall. That sucks for Microsoft. It was acting funky when i played it. Hopefully they\'ll be able to fix this problem...

*points and laughs at (http://xbox sux) *
BWAHAHAHA!
Now....I wonder if Eric Jaycob is gonna tell us we should be kicked for laughing at the (http://xbox sux)

X-box in Little Rock, AR EB wasn\'t working last time I was there.

thanks for the info! I am gonna delay my purchase because of this.
I am so glad I was informed that an MS product (the only reason this \'news\' was reported anyway) has broken in America.
I feel better knowing that even through my 3 PSXs, I can safely stand back and wait for MS to get this \'problem\' sorted out.
This is a PS2 board, and their is nothing to debate about this topic, other than the fact that every console has potential to break, and since MS OS\'s arent the most stable int he world, this has been how you, ballooned?

I\'ve owned a PSX from Oct. of 1995 and it still plays like a gem. Modded for playing Tobal No2 and Time Crisis (both Japanese versions, actually, Tobal2 never made it to the US).
Out of 70 million, a few skipping PSX is a drop in the sea.
-
I hope MS takes care of this problem. They don´t need this kind of attention. They don´t want the x-box to be called ugly names like with their OS.
But it is strange that they even shows the kiosks with not 100% stable hardware. They must have known about this. Why risk anything?

They have committed to it, can\'t back down now, their stock might fall. :D So what if some Green screens of death appear ... ;)
Too bad M$ did not take an AMD processor, and some other Graphics company to bed... the PC industry is in a rot, especially vid-cards + Processors IMO.

Yeah, and I guess the only reason the PS2 problems were reported was because it was a Sony product, right? If the NGC had these problems, do you think everyone would just ignore them because it is not from Microsoft? Of course not. Some people might want to know that the launch Xboxes are having the same problems as the launch PS2s. I\'m sure some people out there actually care if they are buying a working system.

You keep on bringing that up, yet you are the only one. I had my PSX since launch (I still have it), and the only problem it ever had was a music skipping problem like four years after I got it. I sent it in and got it fixed. I don\'t see how you can go through 3 PSXs.

I don\'t understand what you mean by ballooned, but the reason I posted this is because most people who were looking forward to the Xbox on launch were flat out denying that the Xbox had problems when fastson posted his thread. If it turns out that the launch Xboxes are faulty, don\'t you want to know about it?
-
Why do people in here funny it funny that it they are going wrong, DO YOU WORK FOR SONY OR SOMETHING?
And if my mind serves me right, did lots of PS2 go wrong? i am on my second one.
-
I wouldn\'t worry about it. I know xbox devs and the xbox team themselves that don\'t have an issue with the final kits.
The information on Nintendo-age is from a Nintendo fanboy of all people. His name is Lord Federman and he is pro Nintendo and anti-xbox and he lives in Germantown, MD and works at a local Target store there. He is around 17 years of age and of course he likes Nintendo, he is only a kid and doesn\'t have a job nor is out of high school yet. This story is on slashdot. Gee an Anti-Microsoft article at Slashdot.
The problems that did happen were not with the final consumer kits but only with some of the store demo units.
If the consumer units are faulty then yes you should complain to microsoft and say they have crappy hardware, but this problem is unrelated to the consumer xboxes and that has been posted by several devs.
Lets wait and see after Nov 15th and see if there are as many as the PS2\'s that are being returned because of issues.
Anti-Microsoft people are really stupid, they jump for joy at something that isn\'t even related but of course anything anti-microsoft is good right?
It makes me sick at the lack of common sense and understanding of simple concepts that people can not grasp instead they take the mental midget way of thinking.
You really have to wonder if all of that anti-Microsoft rage is just jealousy and simple minded racism.
Kind of like the Rednecks verses the Muslim Terrorists, which one is more simple minded?

If (http://ms sucks) is made like other American made cars...then it\'s sure to break. Just the facts....not an opinion.
-
no, people were reporting PS2s breaking because they were having personal experiences with them.
Not because they saw a picture on the internet of a devkit that had a problem, or that a store, where they run the systems for 8 to 14 hours straight, had a problem. Nobody has had personal experiences with X-Boxs breaking, because they don\'t own them yet. Nobody knows why the systems werent on or working.
Somebody could have dropped it. Not plugged in correctly, not given ventiltion for the fan, etc, etc, etc. THey are tons of reasons why an X_Box didn\'t work.
This topic is not designed to inform people that X-Boxs could be faulty, but sub-conciously was made to get a chuckle from people.
In other words, until you people have an XBox and have problems, or see problems first hand, then it is null and void.
BTW, tons of people on here have said they had multiple Sony systems.
Gohan, Sony-Fan, Living-In Clip (I think), me, Luke, Bossieman, etc
some of these people had to trade their old one in, because they didn\'t work, or send it in to Sony to have it replaced, not seeing it again for a month or more. I don\'t get how you havent noticed numerous threads over the past year where a person will say how many SOny systems they have had. THe number has increased from then, also.

What about those of us, who fix them ourselves???
I\'m about ready to take mine apart anyways. Since i have the basic knowledge to do so.
DO NOT TRY THIS AT HOME.
BTW, I never had a warrenty to begin with. At least, not an exteneded.

"Gaming Age has an article up about some stores, including Toys R Us and Babbages, Xbox kiosk crashing at various places across the country. "Out of five stores that have playable demos within a ten mile area, only two have working units," says one Babbage\'s employee."
Seems like a lot of Xbox\'s have been dropped then...
In other words, until you people have an XBox and have problems, or see problems first hand, then it is null and void.
If I read the news correctly, these XBox\'s are probably finalized and the same builds that will be sold on launch. Since the launch is pretty close too, is yet another reason to believe this. While no one own a Xbox yet, it is safe to assume that the launch systems won\'t be any different if there is no delay. If they do delay it, no problem, but if you deny it or not, there is evidence showing that there a lot of faulty Xbox\'s out there.
BTW, tons of people on here have said they had multiple Sony systems.
I own my system since launch and played it on day 1 over 20 hours straight without experiencing any problems what so ever. I\'ve been playing it regularly since then and still haven\'t had any problems yet. Since I was the webmaster of a PS2 site, I was in contact with a lot of members and none of them had any problems as well.
And besides, this post is just to prove that there are faulty Xbox\'s (aswell as some PS2s in the US) -> it\'s a post to those Xboxs fanboys that thought Microsoft would pull this through without a single problem and bashed the PS2 several times.
-
I don\'t remember anyone saying there would be NO problems with the XBox launch, there are always problems with launches.
Eric Jacob
-
There\'s a big difference between multiple reports from owners of faulty PS2s and a news story about several Xbox demo stations being out of order. HUGE difference. I would expect the display units to go through very rigorous testing before being sent out, what would be even worse though is if they had tested them thoroughly. For the sake of those looking forward to launch day lets hope this is a few isolated incidents blown way out of proportion.
On the bright side though, the quicker the xbox is declared legally dead, the sooner PS2 and PC owners will have the chance to play those formerly exclusive titles.
j/k
not funny
I know
Sorry :D

Looks like M$ has issued a press release regarding this:

\'NO\' problems might be a bit blown out of proportion, but those naiv little pricks are around (maybe not on this board). Point is, a lot of those fanboys critized and bashed Sony for something that is mostly comment when a new electronic good is shipped - thinking that Microsoft would do better. As it seems, Microsoft is no exception. There ya go. :)
-
Nice try EmperorRob, but I won\'t fall for that. :)
Here is the real press release from Gaming Age:
A Microsoft representative has responded to yesterday\'s FiXbox story. Here\'s the official company line on in-store Xbox units.
"With over 10,000 playable Xbox kiosks at retail over a month before launch, there are bound to be a few issues that crop up. Microsoft representatives are currently following up with retailers across the country to insure proper functionality of kiosks. Overall, the displays are working great and we are on track to achieve our goal of having 100% of the Xbox interactive displays working correctly and demonstrating the Xbox difference."
GA continues to receive email from readers on the status of in-store Xbox kiosks. We\'ll keep you updated.

Nice try Ironfist :D i didnt fal into that one! :P
the reason why many psx2 broke is because when people change disk they are too lazy to wait for the disk to stop spinning , so the just jam the black spinndle which holds the disk in its place. If you read the manual it says NOT to do this. I also believe that this is also the reason why Sony chose for a motorized disk ray for ps2.
I have never ever had any problem with any of my consoles other that my n64, even my japanese launch ps2 never gave me problems (including the ridge racer memory card error) I dont care for the xbox problems because every console has them. By the time It reaches europe and I have the money to pruchase the thing all the problems will be solved, right M$?:D
-
Note that I have gone through 5 playstations, and have treated every damned one of them like gold.
I still don\'t understand why exactly I keep giving $ony more chances.
-
no you didn\'t LoD, Sony\'s products don\'t break, you heard it straight from Sony, nobody on this board\'s PSXs/PS2s have broken ;)
Because of the great games, they know that this equation works -
shoddy hardware + tons of great exclusives = many sales.
Customer doesnt know he is getting bent over every time he turns on the system :)
If the fanboys were on other boards, post this crap there, we don\'t need it here, because they arent on here to \'inform\'
Eric Jacob

I had 2 of my PSXs fry. My PS2 is still chugging away though.
-
anyway the xbox at my local store isnt working correctly and i am not a fanboy of any sort
just informing yall - but it is happening and its not as uncommon as you think - the error was not fatal and just took a little figuring out by the employee and it was up and working the next day

Amen. I\'ve owned three PSX\'s, the first two just died on me. ANd please, don\'t anyone tell me I wasn\'t taking care of my consoles, because mine stay in mint condition and I had never have had a problem \'cept for the Playstation.
As for the XBox fiasco, until they ship and people actually buy them and have problems, I\'m not going to worry. Howevve all this sorted out by launch, because the last thing they need is a bunch of people with units that don\'t play properly , ala PS2 launch.

Well, my 6 year old PSX still works and I have a hard time believing you took care of yours. Mint conditions.....puhleez.
As for the Xbox fiasco - the damn kiosks ain\'t working right so you should worry. What would you want to represent your product? A faulty one or one that works?

Link doesn\'t work.

I resent that. All I did with my first two psxs is put games in it while it sat beneath my tv. I never moved it, it never got bumped, they just stopped working. Especially after the first one died, I was extra careful with it.
Just because yours still works DOES NOT mean every console out there is without defects. Open your mind.
-
I\'ve owned
- PSX - 5
- PS2 - 1 repaired twice
PSX #4 was my fault, got a little too excited soldering on a m0dchip.
-
Either your PSX was too close to something which gave out too much heat, I don\'t know. I\'ve had my PSX on for 4 straight days(couldn\'t find my memory card til the 4th day), lugged it in a suitcase, back pack, tossed around in the trunk of my car, dropped and kicked by accident.
I\'d say only a few were defective out of all the millions made. That\'s life. But man, to go through 5 PSX\'s? Your house must be extremely dusty and hot or there\'s too much humidity in your room. I find it hard to believe.
-
Twisted Metal 2 and Castlevania SOTN were 2 of the games that would skip and hang in my machines. It was consistent across most of the PSXs I had. I build computers and I\'m a programmer. I know how to take care of my machines.

ok i might be done for causeing a flame war but here look at penny-arcade, they have covered this story in there news section and have a funny strip to make us laugh.
