Anyone remember this system? I remember how it cost like $500 for one version with VCD capability, and the other was $300 with out it. And how it had 3... yes, you heard me... THREE exclusive Zelda games that you people probably never heard of. Another cool game called burnout... What happened to this system. It was the first CD based system... and it was pretty bad ass, it just never got any third party support, and that killed it... I might go buy one for the 3 Zelda games if I can get it off Ebay for like $20...

Yeah I remember the system. I remember looking at it at one of the large retail outlets in my area and almost bought it. I couldn\'t quite afford it though. I think there was a pretty good looking golf game that they always had playing as a demo.

Philips is Dutch you know. Here in the Netherlands consumers got
sceptic about cd i real fast.
Here\'s why it flopped :
- It wasn\'t a games console really. Crappy controller. Philips
launched it as a multifunctional set top box system.
- 16 bit processor ; was good for starters, but after time Philips
neglected to improve on that one. Pentiums were on their way
already.
- the vcd add on. dang, it was just too f*cking expensive ; only a very small library of crappy movies was available.
- you could play crappy games on it ; c\'mon the Genesis ( here Megadrive) and the SNES were here for some years I believe, and a damn better alternative.
- all the multimedia functions, like \'create your own digital fotoalbum\' etc could be done with PC\'s with cdrom drives only
half a year later since the first CD i was launched.
So my conclusion is that the machine was obsolete already, 6 months after it\'s birth. On top of that Philips failed to improve the
technology.
Also : ppl didn\'t really see use of all the vaguely so called \'multimedia functions\' Philips promoted. Certainly at such a high price.
So many Philips flops LOL:laughing: , and I haven\'t even mentioned the Philips debacle of DCC. A system called \'Minidisc\' by Sony killed it,... so I heard....:eyemouth:

Im ducth too, I really dont like philips even though it is part of us ducth people. Im a sony fanboy :D
CD-I suffered from a terrible lack of decent/good games thats why it failed, and the controller is hilarious

My friend has one, but he doesnt play it though...

That CD-I was crap. Plain and simple. Those 3 "exclusive" Zelda games were so horrible, and such a mistake, that I know Nintendo rued the day they ever got into negotiations with them. In fact, those negotiations failed, in the end, and the residual result was that Philips retained the right to publish those 3 Zelda games. But, they were forced to do so independently, which is why they sucked so hard.

The CD-i had some fun games on it, but it was way too expensive. If you can find one cheap(like me :D ), its a good buy. And Burn Cycle is still a badass game, with a humorous ending.
