This is just one of many previews about Halo that says its a great game
11.2.2001 6:39:56 PM Xbox Software
Halo Preview
1. Does this Xbox launch title take first-person console games to new heights?
I thought long and hard on how to kick-start this preview after completing Halo, but strangely enough the only thing I can muster to covey to our readers is that HALO ROCKS. The reason I say so, strangely enough, is because there are very few titles, on any of the existing platforms, including PC that have managed to grasp that "magic" spark that sets new standards for everyone else to follow.
For starters, Halo boasts very impressive visuals, starting with basic textures to incredible models and various effects. The scene, which was shown at E3 earlier this year, where marines storm the alien beachhead, is incredibly detailed, smooth as silk and full of action. Some other literally jaw-dropping scenes make you wonder how the Xbox can pull off such incredible graphical feats. Just wait till you see a dozen or so marines duking it out with an alien force of the same size, all set in an incredibly detailed and lush environment. Among the things that I personally can\'t get enough of is lobbing frag grenades behind enemy cover. Sometimes, they will notice the grenade and yell out "Grenade!" as they scramble for cover. But when the \'nade goes off, they literally take off into air, their broken bodies and limbs violently twisting in the shockwave.
Expanding on the subject of the game’s graphics, Halo also features some of the biggest indoor/outdoor environments that I have seen outside of Tribes II. From narrow corridors and tunnels, to valleys, swamps and enormous structures, the environment are detailed and nicely designed. And to top it off, there are virtually no loading times! The only loading you see is between chapters. When you progress from one mission to another within a chapter, there are checkpoints, so to speak, that load in less then a second. The final version of the game coupled with a retail Xbox unit will probably eliminate those altogether, but even now, it’s just a slight jerk rather than loading pause.
Another feature definitely worth mentioning is the sound. As you might already know, Xbox supports Dolby 5.1 and playing Halo with anything less doesn\'t do the game justice. The game comes to life with dynamic 3D sound. It literally adds a new dimension to console gaming experience when you hear things like debris drop to the ground after the plasma shot that you just dodged hits the wall behind you.
Despite the graphics and sound, one of the coolest things about Halo is the artificial intelligence of the enemy units and your squad mates. First, the marines that come to your aid from time to time can hold their own turf; it’s a lot of fun to sometimes keep your distance and just watch them do their stuff. Enemy AI is just as good if not better. The aliens will ambush you, rush you, run for cover and call reinforcements so efficiently that it puts the much-acclaimed Half-Life AI to shame. Sometimes, it gets downright annoying because they evade you and use cover so well. But in the end it just boils down to more fun, challenge and replay value.
As far as control goes, I\'m happy to say that it’s nearly flawless. Being a hard-core PC FPS junky and avid console gamer, I know what it’s like to play first person shooters on both platforms and Halo delivers here again. Both analog sticks are being used for movement and view, and both can be fully configured to your liking, including sensitivity, inverted option, auto center, and so on. The overall control scheme is very similar to Red Faction for PS2, it just feels a bit snappier. It\'s safe to say that if you have played any first person shooters on DC or PSX/PS2 with analog sticks, you\'ll be right at home with Halo. Additionally, to help your aim, there is also a degree of auto-aim, meaning that shots will sort of pivot toward the target as long as its in the gun sights.
The entire single player story is broken up into multiple chapters, each chapter containing numerous missions and objectives. The story that unfolds during the single player campaign is an interesting one to say the least. It might not be the most original, but it’s certainly well executed and presented through the environments and in-game cinematic cut-scenes. Although we don’t want to spoil the details of the story for you , you can expect a few really exciting twists.
In addition to single player game, there is also a multiplayer feature. The two-player coop campaign game is pretty interesting, as you can execute some very cool ambushes and other fun strategies. Other multiplayer features include two-player split screen deathmatch, four-player a la LAN hook-up and several different game modes, like capture the flag and an option to create you own game rules.
I can\'t exactly figure out why Halo impressed me so much, but there are a couple of things that attribute to its overall success. First and foremost, is the atmosphere. Bungie did an amazing job of conveying the story, setting, mood and general feel of a "would be" space marine to the gamer. The graphics, sound effects and music, weapons, environments and missions all contribute to the great gaming experience that Halo provides. It simply looks, sounds, and feels fun to play. If Halo is any indication of things to come, Xbox fans should be a very happy bunch

yeah unfortunatly the xbox version will be inferior because it doesn\'t contain any multiplay actross the net, which it was originally designed for
-
it would look better if it was locked at 60 FPS
-
quit complaining, it will be amazing even at 30fps and there is always the posibility of a patch for online play. thats the beauty of xbox! and it already has been proclaimed by mainy reviewers as a likley game of the year!
-
*yawn*
where\'s my PC version that i can run at 1280x1024 at 100FPS?
good thing i spent my XBOX money on a geforce 3 card instead
*oh and box is ONLY console to offer online play? thru a patch?
lol, im already playing ONLINE with my PS2
-
the resolution on xbox will be better asuming u have a flat screen or better tv. 100fps?
-
yippie your playing online! there is no ps2 game worth that except maybe TH3, also going to be on xbox, no game as close to the greatness of halo will show for ps2
-
I doubt that the resolution will be any higher on a flatscreen... and LOL, I hope you don\'t honestly believe that HALO will eventually be online on Xbox?
-
how many people do u think have a flatscreen or digital TV, 5% of the population?
the market isnt ready for digital TV\'s. remember minidisks?
yes, 100 FPS
1.5 gig Pentium 4 + Geforce 3 = sweet 3D love
*oh, and gamepads + 1st or 3rd person shooters = lame
the XBOX BETTER accept USB plugins like a mouse to play shooters
**xbox, have u played halo, and its great huh? if not please open mouth, and remove foot
-
and it already has been proclaimed by mainy reviewers as a likley game of the year!
 This I have to see.

What is wrong with you guys, this game is ment to be amazing, most of you are carrying on like a bunch of ps2 fanboys, that is one thing that i thought these forums were so good for, because when you saw a good game you said it was a good game, no matter what console it was on, but know what has happened?
"yeah unfortunatly the xbox version will be inferior because it doesn\'t contain any multiplay actross the net, which it was originally designed for"
I mean this is the first comment, this game sounds amazing, and all i hear is good things about it, and this is what you come up with!!!!
Anyway i cant wait to get my hands on this game, it is going to be great!

Off topic: Is it just me, or was this "attack" planned? We got a new post from ProfessorX, TheOgodlyThing, Tshirts, and xbox all in one day. Well, if it was planned, my advice to you guys is to plan harder. If anything, all these posts made me even happier to own a PS2.
-
ethan, i dont care HOW great Halo looks or plays
if it does not
*possess mouse support
*run above 30 FPS AT ALL TIMES
*have netplay
then halo = suck

Hmmm $300.00 for an Xbox. For your geforce card alone it\'s going to cost you about 350!

Every game that doesn\'t have multiplayer is inferior...Metal Gear Ray just wants everyone to know that!
-
nope, a geforce 3 costs 239$ USD
dont believe me, click here (http://www.pricewatch.com/1/37/3094-1.htm)
perhaps if you bought it at Sears, you would pay 350$
OR, but the $175 Ti 200 model and overclock it to Ti 500 speeds
:)

You are willing to drop down to that level and twist other peoples words up? That is low ProfessorX. I expected more from you.

they\'re clutching at straws, what do you expect?
wont be long will they start attacking our grammer and spelling

Oh I didn\'t mean it all I was just being sarcastic in terms of a game being inferior just because it lacks on line play. There is no way he could possibly know that. Thats all.

For anyone who has played online FPSs, they know that online beats offline any day. Why do you think Quake III Arena and Unreal Tournament were made? Because Online is 10x as fun as off line. Even Half Life -- the FPS that is known for its great single player game and story, is played more online than offline.
Online = more fun = better game.

First off I have played online FPS since the beginning and they are fun but if you have an engrossing offline experience it is just as good if not better than an online game. I\'ve had to deal with campers, cheaters, and such and that is no fun. Online is fun yes but it doesn\'t make the game.
Does Red Faction, Half Life, Timesplitters, and all other FPS that come out for PS2 suck because they lack online play? Please. You guys still have a number of FPS coming down the pipe for the PS2 WITHOUT online play be prepared to defend them! Besides you guys are reaching to downplay this game and it shows.

and just what is sony doing now, a year after the ps2 launched, i mean they haven\'t got to worry about console launch, so they have had 1 year to get the online play up and running, but i don\'t see much!
"then halo = suck"
You are a fool, you cant even say when a game looks great.
And slightly better graphics, sorry but the graphics on this game, are what sony was promising to all of us, and they have not delivered, at all!
Have you watched the commerical for this game! if not go watch it before you say something stupid, about slightly better graphics and halo sucks!!!!::mad:
"run above 30 FPS AT ALL TIMES"
Some one doesn\'t know anything about this game, go and read some impression on the framerate, and every impression says how impressive the framerate is, and how smooth it is, and that you wouldn\'t think it was running at 30fps!
I don\'t want to get into a ROW with you, but i don\'t understand why you are attacking a game that is ment to be great !
I thought you loved games, and it didn\'t matter what platform they are on, looks like i was wrong BIG TIME!
Anyway it is your choice if you play the game or not, all i know is i am not going to pass up on the opertunity to play this game!

First of all, don\'t generalize me into a group who thinks Halo sucks, because I don\'t think that at all. I was just showing how it would be a lot better if it had online play. Sure, single player is fun for a little while, but without playing against lots of other poeple, the game gets old. Yes, Red Faction and Quake III got old quickly because I was used to playing FPS games online. Timesplitters would have been a lot better if it was online too, but it was still a great multiplayer game just like Halo can still be a great multiplayer game. Until console FPSs go online, they will never be comparable to the computer versions of the same name.
I think a big reason why people bash Halo is because of what Microsoft hyped it up to be. The Xbox is a console that is designed for online play, yet they won\'t have online play until next spring at the earliest (I\'m a little skeptical about that date...). Halo not being online, and not having a chance to go online (I remember the developers saying there were no plans to have a patch or anything to make it online compatible) is a blow to all the people looking forward to what this game was going to be.
-
How do you know they won\'t make a DVD like Twisted metal black and GT3 is ment to do, so that it enables Network play?
If they can do it with these games, why not Xbox games?
For me it is good because i don\'t really care about online play, Quake 3 was fun online for the DC, but it didn\'t make me only want to play online, but then agian i can see where you guys are coming from that like to play online, and i guess it is a shame that it does have online play, but just play it for what it is ment to be a great game:D
-
Like I said, the developers said they don\'t have any intentions of making it online in the future. Maybe this will change, but as of right now, there are no plans for online Halo.
And I agree, play it for what it is -- a great console FPS. It doesn\'t live up to the hype, but it is great none the less.
-
Speaking of the developers, I also recall them saying the game(HALO, of course) wont look or sound as good on the PC.
You\'ll most likely have more fun with the PC version, because of the online capabilities. Xbox version wont be getting any "patch" or update, Matt Soel already confirmed this.
... Might as well get in on it. I was disappointed that the online plans for HALO were scrapped as well. But after hearing the impressions from people who\'ve played the game a little more than me, I dont really care about it anymore. The game\'s story mode is great, and co-op sounds even better(It wasn\'t in when I played). It took Chris Butcher around 60 hours to beat HALO on its highest difficulty, that should say something. In my opinion, the involving single player and co-op, and 26 multiplayer modes more than make up for what we lost. I wouldn\'t dismiss this game and downplay it like some of you have been doing on this thread so soon.
-
I just had an intresting experience, I went to target to play the GameCube for the second time, while playing Rogue Leader. Anyways, apparently there were the Xbox, GC and PS2 demo all within a 2 yard space. Anyways. There were like 4 people who all came to play the the Xbox and Halo. I was the only one who came to play the GC, but after I got my hands on the GC controller, I hit the reset and went to Rogue Leader, instantly all of the people playing the PS2 or Halo stopped playing just to watch Rogue Leader, quotes were "That is just unreal" "How do they do it" and "screw the XBox, I\'m buyin this."
Anyways, I don\'t think the Xbox has a great future.....
-
Console FPS games suck ass
I\'ll wait for Halo to come to the PC with mouse/keyboard and online support...
Bah to console FPS games!
They ****ed up Halo when they went from 3rd person to 1st person, I\'m not remotely interested in it anymore for X-Box... Should\'ve sticked to 3rd person on the X-Box.
-
ethen, i gave THREE criteria for Halo to impress me
i am far from a fool, as you have guessed all along, and i DO love games, BUT theres far too many these days for me to waste my time on non A+ titles
did you even read my post?
please dont use me as a punching bag, when i denounce someone claims that Halo is a great game and that it will be "game of the year"

For a console FPS, Halo is just fine. Compared to a PC FPS, Halo comes up short. The problem isn\'t that the game sucks, it\'s just lacking a lot of things that we all hoped it would be. We all wanted an expandable game with many many online options with huge 30 person servers running on an X-Box console through broadband at a constant 60FPS a second. We all wanted a game that was uninhindered by lag or framerate that leveled the playing field between hardcore PC users and the casual PC user. X-Box and Halo offered that such possibility and then the things that we most wanted from the game were snatched away.
No online play.
60FPS is not constant.
Max players at once is 4.
How can I not feel dissapointed? With so many possibilities, why must I now wait for the PC version in which it was originally intended? Single player games are fine, but for FPS\' I honestly never feel the need to revisit them. Especially when I know all the secrets and traps and plot elements. Half-Life was a great game, but it was even better after its online portion (TFC, CS, DoD, DM) came together and sent the series into overdrive. Now a sequel is imminent as well as many spin-offs of its modifications.
It\'s possible Halo will be the same on the X-Box, but it will never be as grand in scope as it will be on the PC and that\'s what\'s dissapointing. For the better game with the extra features I want, I need to wait for the PC version, but for the single player game, I can spill 500 bucks on a bundle with Halo included. Thank but no thanks, I\'d rather have my Keyboard\\Mouse combo instead of fighting a slow turning game controller with too few buttons and features for me to enjoy the title to its fullest.
That\'s just me though. Don\'t think this opinion is solely focused at Halo though, I feel the same way about Red Faction, TimeSplitters and to an extent, Medal of Honor, even though MoH is the best FPS for a console to date.

ok here is my spec\'s
1.4 Gig Athlon , TNT2 (but going to get either a Ge force 3 or Radion 2)
A Whole load of Ram and other app\'s
Hmmmmmmmm
Chance of me getting a X box to run it at 30 fps rather than well over 60fps when i up grade my GFX Card on my PC.
ZERO.
i think M$ have shown there weakness to the entire world with is game.
Yup get people to buy your console when you can just up grade your PC and play the same games only faste, better and ONLINE.

oh and finally
HALO to be game of the year ?
Well
Game on of the year on the PC anyway.
Because thats the format that i am goingto buy this game for :D

AMEN!
MOH owns EVERY other console FPS out there

You have not even played Halo. YOu just throwing that online thing in there because that is the only shot you can take at the game. The fact is Halo has been getting raved reviews all over the net for being a awesome game. I mean Ironfist you never critisize anything sony does. What fps on ps2 has had online play?????
Halo was redesigned to be a console fps and everyone is saying it rocks. Geesh you act as if every ps2 game is perfect. I mean you and MM try to find everything wrong in everyother system but not whats wrong in ps2. MM maybe a one dementional gamer now. But I at least thought you ironfist was multi-console.
IronFist[/1] It doesn\'t live up to the hype, but it is great none the less
Unless y0u got some kind of ms connection and you where able to get your hands on and xbox and complete halo how could you say something like that????

That is the big problem right there. This version of halo was not ment to be online. It was redesigned as a console fps. You may have wanted all those online options but this version of halo was not ment to have those. And just because you may love halo with all the online options you could ask for. There is no reason that this new version of halo doesn\'t rock. I don\'t think halo would be getting such good impressions if it sucked or came up short. Your just seeing it as a online fps and not a console fps.

I think you will find thatr one of the main points that RYU has with the X box version of HALO is NO ONLINE SUPPORT OR GAMEPLAY.
Is that now this seams very for one of the FLAGSHIP XBOX games and to have this feature redundent has to be a poor choice indeed.
remember on of the features that the xbox has is being internet ready from out of the box (no pun intended) and a Hard drive for updates , patches and nice M.OD\'s
now to have this feature to be ignored seams very strange indeed.
maybe they decided that most Xbox owners wont want the feature off online multiplayer games ?
VERY strange indeed.
So to re-cap
the Xbox version of HALO will
Not have online support/ games
and Run at 30 fps
HAVE TO USE THE NASTY CONTROLER
the PC version will
have online support (patches addons, updates and M O D S /
games
Run far inexcess of 60 fps withthe correct upgrades.
Mouse and keyboard support
Call me a fool but i know which one ill be buying.
:D

Halo is one of my most wanted xbox games. I ready to play another awesome FPS!!!!!!
-
QuDDus, you are bashing my opinion because I was saying Halo was a good console FPS? I just don\'t get you sometimes...
You have not even played Halo. YOu just throwing that online thing in there because that is the only shot you can take at the game.
I was throwing that online thing in there because that is what it was originally going to have. The game did not live up to the hype because Microsoft\'s network is not ready.
The fact is Halo has been getting raved reviews all over the net for being a awesome game. I mean Ironfist you never critisize anything sony does. What fps on ps2 has had online play?????
Here\'s a better question: What PS2 fps has claimed they would have online play?
I mean you and MM try to find everything wrong in everyother system but not whats wrong in ps2.
And you try to find everything wrong with the PS2 and not in the Xbox. *gasp*
But I at least thought you ironfist was multi-console.
I guess you missed it. I announced that I was an official Sony fanboy until the other consoles were worth buying.
IronFist: It doesn\'t live up to the hype, but it is great none the less
QuDDus:Unless y0u got some kind of ms connection and you where able to get your hands on and xbox and complete halo how could you say something like that????
Like I said before, it doesn\'t live up to the hype. I remember when they were first showing the game. It was in 3rd person view and they claim one person could drive around in a car while the other person could shoot from the back seat. It was going to be an awesome multiplayer game that required teamwork to defeat your apponents in Deathmatch. Not any more. So much has changed from what it was originally going to be it\'s not even exciting anymore.
-
One thing wrong I have with your statements
Here\'s a better question: What PS2 fps has claimed they would have online play?
Halo FOR THE XBOX never claimed to be online. PC version - yes of course it supposed to be online but the Xbox version. Other than that I can see where your coming from.

Halo for the Xbox was originally going to be online. But when the developers found out Microsoft\'s online network wasn\'t going to be ready in time, they had to scratch those plans.
Don\'t you remember when they first announced that it wouldn\'t be online unlike what they previously thought? Everyone was devistated.
EDIT: I found this at TeamXbox.com.
Earlier today, Bungie\'s Matt Soell clarified the status of Halo\'s internet play on the Xbox. Halo\'s internet play has been a question speculating around the \'net for months. In response to a question made in Bungie\'s Halo forum, Matt had this to say:
Unfortunately it\'s not possible for us to code support for internet play without more info than we have now. So Xbox Halo won\'t magically work over the internet when MS gets their networking stuff up. I don\'t think a patch will happen either.
A separate product is a possibility, but as things stand right now there is no definite plan for such a product. The team gets to decide what they work on next, but they won\'t make that decision until Halo is done.
I should make clear that I\'m talking specifically about the Xbox version of Halo here.
And here are some peoples reactions:
all this talk about "giving gamers what they want",and they totally burn us by not giving us online games at launch. oh well, just another negative in the long line of mistakes by microsoft. sony, with their network going online this november, with 5 games, must be laughing right now.
well, they won\'t give us online support for their killer app,but at least they\'ll provide mouse and keyboard support.....ohhh,that\'s right, microsoft has banned the release of a mouse and keyboard. this is great microsoft. microsoft should remember, the object is to try and have their console get the MOST sales, not the LEAST. geniuses
Man, that is a disappointment. I was really wishing Halo would have online support :(

It\'s obvious that this board is filled with PS2 whores. MM is the biggest Sony sucker I\'ve ever seen in my life. MM, try not to make it obvious that you\'re bending over and taking it up the ass from Sony. You\'re such a big PS2 hooker and you don\'t even try to hide it. Anyone who denies Halos greatness is a flat out, bonafide FANHO!

So an XBox "hooker" is calling someone a PS2 "hooker".. Am I the only one who see\'s something wrong with this?
By the way - until all of you have played final and complete versions of HALO all the way through, I think it is alittle premature and moronic to label it with "greatness".
Then again, I hate all FPS games for consoles.

Clip, suck it. MM is a biased fool and you know it. Why don\'t you take his **** out of your mouth and stand up like a man.

Why don\'t you take your head out of MS\'s ass, and go shove it up some other Xbox fanboys? Eh? sounds like a good idea to me. You my friend, are a friggin Troll.

Ha Ha Ha  Some nice fanboyism here.
Id just like to throw in my 2 cents.
From playing the E3 build of halo with its stuttering frame rate and all, if this build runs at a constant 30fps with loads of details - im all for it. Playing with the xbox controller took some time to get used to, but I loved it at the end of the day.
Saying halo will suck with 30 frames, no mouse/keyboard support, and especially online play.
From a Pc gamers perspective i would say thats all true. With that type of pc setup you will be paying more than $1000.
On the subject of weakness\'es - I see more than a year has past and the ps2 still has Jaggy games.
Wasnt there a article saying that this problem had been fixed. Like turning on a switch.
Despite jaggies the games are still enjoyable, as Halo will be on Xbox.

Yeah you say this about Halo, but that is all anyone says about MGS2.
Surly you can\'t say one thing about one game and something else for another?
But i don\'t really care because both games are going to be great, and i can\'t wait to play either.

There\'s one major difference there though... Most of those people have played the MGS2 demo but not played Halo at all.

Electronics boutique had Halo up and running in it\'s full version at my local mall. This game kicks ass in my opinion. I was watching someone play for about 15-20 minutes or so before I asked him if I was able to join him. Even though I knew this game was multiplayer, I thought the multiplayer was of the short-lived mission types like Timesplitter. I had no idea that a second player could join in for the entire game. Wow! Anyway I\'ve played some of this game and I walked away extermely impressed. I don\'t know how many times I kept telling this guy who was playing with me that I had to go only to stay another 20-30 minutes.
Any game that is preventing me from leaving the store to take care of business is doing something right!! Playing the game I actually felt as though I was immersed in some kind of movie. From the time the aliens invade the command ship from escaping in a smaller ship and crashing on the planet. It was just cool!
My favorite part was taking control of the gun of a jeep while my counterpart drove the jeep. Now that\'s what I call cooperative play. Just plain fun! The coolest part was watching alien ships descend for landing from the sky while they try to gun down rebel forces! Although I did not play deep into the game, from what was played you can tell the game is huge! It just has that feel to it! No online so what? The game is da shiznit!! I can wait! But anyway what the heck am I taking about I didn\'t even pre-order an XBOX. I Pre-ordered a Gamecube simply for its franchises and of course Rogue Leader. Anyway before playing a snippet of Halo I couldn\'t find a reason to buy an Xbox but now I\'m seriously reconsidering. Still, beyond halo, I don\'t see much. But Halo is da sh**!!

That is the most intellegent thing said in this entire thread. Nobody in here can say anything about halo until they have played final version. IT is rather funny some ppl would have you to think they have played it.
