Title: Computer grinding noise

Whenever my computer boots up there is this unpleasent grinding noise.  Anyone know whats wrong with it.  Smacking it doesn\'t work :D

Have you tried the 2-story method?

Drop it out of a 2-story window...I guarenteed to stop all grinding!:D

Could be the fan inside the power supply maybe, how old is your PC?

Sounds like it could be anything with a motor booting up..

Heat sync fan, hard drive, CD-rom, disk drive.  If it is grinding on start up then it may be failing.

maby u have a very low amount of memory like say 32 mb and its ur hard drive swapping data, my trusty emachines used to do that until i upgraded the ram from 32 to 160 mb.

The same happened to me.  I opened my comp up and then turned it on to find out it was a CPU heat sink fan.  I replaced and it sounds fine.

2nd choice is most likely your PS fan as someone else mentioned.
