Title: ......and the best console is........
Post by: CS2x on November 22, 2001, 11:47:00 AM
........in fact, not a console......you see, I have a PS2, and plan on getting an X-Box and mayby a Gamecube, but all this stuff about the next-gen consoles selling like hot cakes makes me worried about the fate of the true ultimate gaming machinge-the PC.

I really think the PC (as a gaming machine, natch) is about to tumble. Which is unfortunate, as it has the greatest games (in my opinion) Little Big Adventure, Half-Life, Outcast, Deus-Ex, Monkey Island, Commandos, Sytem Shock2, Theif, Broken Sword, ect.........

The X-Box is being critsicised for having PC-style games, but with dwindling games sales, and publishers turning their attention away from the PC, I think it would be no bad thing if any of the consoles was stuffed with PC-style games--they need to be enjoyed and experienced by more people. I think PC games and console games can\'t be sepperate any more--PC games need to merge with consoles, and become one (or something. )

Wont work....
Not for the real PC games..... Broken Sword etc works fine..... but who play games like that on their pc now anyway ?? Real PC games is over Internett.
Everquest
Ultima Online
Dark Age of Camelot
Quake 3
Unreal Tournament
Counterstrike

etc etc etc..... this is the real PC games...... that I cant imagine will work as well on Consoles.
PC will always be the ultimate game machine :) Why ? It never dies :)
PS2 will die, Xbox will die, and so do GBC........ they have to make new consoles every 4years. Sure, u have to buy a new PC sometimes too, to have it updated, but it is still a PC with the same ol games on it :)

Certain games will always, always be better on PC. Civilization III, for instance, absolutely would not work as well on a console. Same applies to any Sim City game, Black and White (arguably) and so on.

CS2x, I completely agree with you about PC gaming coming to an end.  There is just not enough profit to be made developing PC games.  I think within the next 5 years, the Xbox will turn out to be a "gaming PC" even though Microsoft was claiming it wasn\'t.  It is an obvious choice for the developers:  Develope games for the PC and make some money, or develope games for the Xbox using the exact same tools (i.e. Directx) and not have to worry about the thousands compatibility problems, the different PC speeds, and the different graphics card\'s capabilities, AND make a ton more money.

Agnino, the PS2 will support online play with Broadband and modems within a few months, it supports a keyboard and mouse, and it has the power to match or surpass PC games graphically.  The Xbox has support for Broadband, a harddrive, and can easily surpass the graphics on PCs.  I am not sure about this, but I think it also supports a mouse/keyboard.  I don\'t see why those "PC games" could not be done on consoles.

But we can always play our old games on our old systems if we wanted to.  So in a sense, console gaming never dies either.  It is a lot cheaper buying a new console every 5 years than upgrading our computer ever other year just so we can play the latest version of Quake.

Also, PCs change to the point where games aren\'t playable on them also.  I wanted to play "Humans" on my PC last month, but because it was an old dos game, I couldn\'t get it working on my Windows 98 system.  That game didn\'t support the newer sound cards, it wouldn\'t run in a Windows dos window, and in the "dos" (which is actually just Microsoft\'s own version of DOS), it kept on having that lame "not enough memory" error.  I think it is possible to get it working, but it\'s not worth all the effort.  And NT systems don\'t even support dos games.  Sure, it takes a lot longer for them to change, but they do change.  How much longer until "Windows" games no longer work on the newest OSs?

I agree PC gaming is on the way out, it has some good years left though and if anything the xbox will serve to keep PC gaming going longer and stronger than it would have otherwise. How? DirectX keeps the path wide open between console and PC creating a self feeding cycle. A minor hit on PC by a tiny developer would be sure to find backing and a smooth transition for an xbox version. The reverse, a hit on xbox first, will have ample reason and only minor obstacles for porting to PC. If my guess is right, it won\'t be long before high end PC gamers will be looking forward to playing ‘enhanced\' versions of xbox games, instead of the other way around, keeping alive a while longer the myth that perpetual PC upgrades are THE way to enjoy gaming at its finest. Even if the xbox fails to meet projected sales it\'s a win win for Microsoft.

BTW chicken, for a creature with no lips you manage to suck fairly well.
